So I get an advertisement from Rakuten for their new mobile phone service and a promise to get the first year free. Yeah, that's what I though too but upon further investigation it seems that you actually have to pay just like 3.000 yen for the setup and there are no cancelling fees after the first year when it jumps to 2.980 or something per month.

Long story short there I find myself filling their web application and sending a picture of my driver's licence as they ask. Except it refuses to be send telling me I need to send jpg and less than 5M in size. Which it is. So I do what every frustrated person does with a web form and reload it it.

And success! I get an email telling my application was successful and the SIM card will reach me in no time.

Three minutes later I get another email telling me oops, because you are a smelly gaijin you actually need to upload your gaijin card to fulfil our requirements. Which is funny because they don't even have that as an option in their pull-down menu.

All the other options require you to send proof of address too so I select the "driver's licence" again and send them the pictures of front and back of my gaijin card. And I do confess, I was slightly tempted to send my first ever dick pic already at this point.

And success! I get an email telling my application was successful and the SIM card will reach me in no time. Except three minutes later I get another email telling me oops, because your name with your Rakuten account and your gaijin card do not match our relationship is not going to work.

This time I actually figured it out immediately, I never use my middle name (and those who need to ask it is Augustus) so I also don't have it in the Rakuten account. So I go and fix that and resend.

And success! I get an email telling my application was successful and the SIM card will reach me in no time. This time I wait with bated breath for three minutes but nothing happens. So it's a real success! Hurrah!

Except now four hours later I get another email saying, sorry this won't work as you didn't select the correct option in the pull-down menu for your documents. For people who followed this far the requirements then are 1) you need to send pictures of your gaijin card to them, 2) you need to select the gaijin card option from the pull-down menu, 3) there are no pull-down menu for gaijin card.

Which brings us to one of my favourite books of all times; Catch-22 by Joseph Miller.

EDIT: I talk to a friend working for Rakuten who confirms even some of their employees haven't been able to order the mobile service; not even after contacting their support. But he advises me to try another browser, as everyone else in Japan they are optimising for Microsoft.

So I do and voila; the pull-down menu is longer and has the needed option. I happily submit everything again and clickety-click away. And finally I get to the end and see the happy results in front of my eyes: "server error".

LOL I think Rakuten needs to hire more competent developers. Who the heck still develop with only IE/Edge in mind at this point?! Similar to South Korea and Microsoft with ActiveX plugin issue before.

But in general I agree Japan websites are lousy and badly designed. They don't pay enough to get the good developers or just outsource everything.

thanks! I found that even more entertaining than a hot (or disastrous) review

Or maybe it's just on purpose because they don't feel like hemorrhaging money for a year.

Aren't they all supposed to be using English there? Why is there no English? I don't care, just think it's funny even Softbank can manage some English.

It seems that despite the server error message the order went through as now the page states "We are processing the account. Please wait in an area with good cell reception".

Based on my experience with them this far I am actually pretty they will fail to deliver the SIM card if I lose cell reception. :D

Conversely I had zero problems signing up, but I made a big effort some years ago to get my name consistent on every account I had.

Just imagine, when they get their new system working, you'll be able to use 5G in Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ginza!

Whoa whoa, hold your horses. Shinjuku is pretty big, surely you don't mean all over Shinjuku but most likely around the JR station?

oh yes, I meant the 丁目s, not like Nishi Shinjuku or Yotsuya.

Ok I suppose they have improved a bit now... and with their Unlimit 2.0 they still seem keen to grab market share.

i feel I have been fleeced by Softbank for too long
Also I prefer Mikitani to Son (not a huge incentive though, granted)

for those who did the switch, are you satisfied now? or does it work only and episodically in a circle of 5km around Tokyo Tower ? :D

I am confused; why would anyone go any further from the Tokyo Tower than that? :p

I have been using it very lightly this far but the data speed seems decent, though I have not been outside their own network yet. They still support just a few phones though so you might need to get a new one if you switch.

yes thats my problem. if they don’t accept Iphones its a no-no

In the beginning they didn't but I believe now they do support the newest models.

But if you want to just get rid of Softbank (the only question I have is why just now?) then get a SIM from IIJ or Mineo or any other MNVOs available. They all work similarly and even have similar pricing schemes so don't know what is the best but I have experience of the two mentioned and no problems whatsoever in several years. Except that they do not provide free chicken every month but somehow I have survived without it.

ok didnt know about that because then again Im a technophobe (and probably I like to get screwed not just in nice ways, who knows...)
So my question is now: if you can get such dirt cheap SIM deals, why did you apply to Rakuten?

Since WFH my phone contract is a complete waste. The only time I go out is for a meal locally, and Youtube is so full of ads I don't bother with that.

It's free for the first year. Or actually 3.300 yens for the whole year. Based on the old style math I learned in the uni that is even cheaper than dirt cheap.
