Details of the Encounter:
I decided to visit Asakusa Rock-Za - the granddaddy of a group of "Rock-za" theaters that includes venues in Shinjuku, Yokohama, and Kawasaki - as a kind of trip down memory lane. I visited the Shinjuku venue when I was a teenager in the late Showa years . I remember the stale, smoky air and the girls with rigid poses, and guys taking polaroid photos of their privates ... The Asakusa Rock-za seems a little more spacious than I remember Shinjuku being, but in other respects it's similar.
I arrived at 12:30 for the 1:00pm show to find that the best seats - right in front of the rotating stage at the end of the catwalk - had been snagged already, and reserved with bags and coats by the hardcore Rock-za nerdy guys. Fortunately, I was able to take a seat to the side of the stage that didn't require me to crane my neck too much to see what was going on.
I went to get myself a snack and a drink from the "maid" who runs a little cafe in the lobby. After waiting patiently behind guys who were pre-paying for signed photographs from the dancers etc. I was able to order a morning set for 600 yen (available until 1:00pm) comprising a drink and a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with Mickey Mouse embossed into the bread.
And then the show. At times, it seems to harbor pretensions of being high art, with classical music and costumes that evoke golden eras of Japanese history ... but this gives way to an earthy kind of burlesque meets music hall. There are eleven female dancers, including the five stars who each perform their turn. Between acts, the chorus-line does song and dance numbers. Its' well rehearsed, and staged - As I mentioned in another thread, I believe that it has picked up a lot of influence from the Takarazuka troupe.
Each dancer performs to two to three pieces of music; starting clothed, and getting progressively less so - typically finishing by holding a couple of naked poses on the rotating stage, and displaying her pussy to the admiring audience members. This part of each performance elicits polite clapping from the fans.
Highlights of the show that I saw were Honoka Akitsuki, a "real" dancer who did an impressive suspended rope performance, and Kotone Hoshizaki, who has done some porn, and seems to have the classic million-dollar Broadway fixed smile. The low point was a veiled woman (Kanna?) who moved around to some atonal classical music that gave way to Noh-style Shakuhachi music.
Final Thoughts:
Recommended, Will Repeat.
Closing Comments:
A worthwhile cultural experience with some beautiful nekkid women.
