Average salary in Tokyo

So if someone says they get 350k yen a month but they also get two 700k bonuses in summer and winter, thats and average mo. salary of $467k yen

Very rarely I have seen this applied to a foreigner, and never for a foreigner who is coming to work from another country. Also if you are normal Japanese university recruit working for a big corporation the sums they add to their own pension funds can be very significant even if you don't stay there until retirement age.

Japanese salaries always confused me. Because from what I understand from Japanese friends, they are paid a monthy salary that seems low. But then you have the factor in the semi-annual bonus which from what i understand can be pretty substantial (1.5-2x the monthly salary each bonus). So if someone says they get 350k yen a month but they also get two 700k bonuses in summer and winter, thats and average mo. salary of $467k yen
True: my wife used to work for a Japanese company in China. She was on a normal salary, but twice a year (February and July) she received bonus 3 times her salary...

Most foreigners don't stay that long and even if paying for your pension is required by law, many companies put your money in private pension funds...

I think you can get by.
Many young Japanese guys and foreign english teachers make only 200.000 a month and they survive somehow. Not comfortably, but somehow.

I'd say if your wife makes the same and you can share some costs, you can be reasonably comfy.

And guys, he's asking if he can live a comfortable life in Tokyo with that salary, i think, not if its a fair salary for his profession and experience. So you dont need the details.

Exactly. It's seems clear to me, since reading this forum over the past year or so, that there's a lot of very wealthy people on this forum. Makes sense because theres a lot of older, professional, international men on here, probably a lot of guys working in finance, consultancy etc. Good for you guys, but I think you are giving the OP an overly bleak impression, somewhat detached from typical 'reality'. The reality is that in general, salaries in Tokyo really, really suck (and a lot of people are really struggling to be fair).

My wife makes around 300k, and I make quite a bit more, but nothing crazy. We live pretty comfortably here, with a centrally located apartment, albeit small. A lot of people manage to scrape by on a lot less. A lot of shop staff will make like 200k per month or even less (and will have a tiny 70k apartment in bad location). That is definitely not comfortable though.

So if its your first job out of college, and you are looking to come to Japan to have a great cultural experience (which you will), then I also think you will be fine.

But obviously, your not going to be able to shell out for 50k/hour escorts or 200k/month Sugar Babies ;) Theres plenty of other ways to have fun for much less though...

Been there done that... I lived in a small touristic Chinese city for 2 years before moving here (and 5 years in another massive Chinese city prior to that...) and expat situation was pretty much similar: we expats were either teachers or airline pilots or hotel people... As a teacher I was on a good salary (good even for cities such as Tokyo or Shanghai) and saved a lot, and hotel people didn't make much more (their benefits were better though, especially housing). Salaries for pilots were crazy high though, 7or 8 times a good teacher salary... It was weird to have drinks with people making in a month what most people make in a year... So, I'm pretty used to that situation...
I did my math and between me and wifey, money won't be a problem at all, unless we refrain from crazy lifestyles and such ;)
I'm not going to get rich or to devote my free time to soaplands and mercenary love, but life will be good.

I wouldn't be too proud of this. Read it aloud to yourself: you sound like a bitter, middle-aged woman. :bag:

Hello ShowaJidai...

And welcome to the forum.

John Chavers may hate me for spoiling his fun, but please don't take him too seriously. He's TAG's beloved resident curmudgeon. Just react exactly like you did. He's really quite amusing, as long as you have a bit of a thick skin.
