I don't really follow this aspect of J pop culture, so I have what is probably a very ignorant/naive question: What, if any, is the relationship between idoru, gravure and AV (women)? Are the distinct groups or different activities/jobs done by the same women or overlapping or ...?

Idols are a 'clean', non-sexual category of 'pop princesses' like AKB48 and Momoiro Clover Z aged from as young as 12 (ugh) to about 25. As well as the male fans who tend to be Akihabara types, they have legions of female fans who 'akogare' them (simultaneously idolize them and want to be like them). They essentially sell sex while being portrayed as cute and innocent, which is key for 'moe' (untranslatable, but something like 'the feeling you get when you see something so adorable you can't take it'). They are strictly not allowed boyfriends, and there have been numerous cases of idols being fired for being papped with a man. They usually move on to other things (acting, solo singing) at around 25, when they 'graduate' the group.

Gravure is glamour photography, usually but not always partially clothed. It's not pornographic (i.e. the model won't spread her legs). It's meant to be titillating and sexy rather than full-frontal. Unlike hardcore porn, you can buy these gravure magazines and photobooks in convenience stores and standard book shops. It's kind of a running joke that idols who have passed their sell-by date and couldn't make it as actresses or singers or who have lost popularity in the aforementioned careers start doing gravure. A few of the better endowed ex-AKB idols are currently in gravure. To complicate matters, idols often release 'photobooks' while they're still at the peak of their idol career, which are essentially gravure photos but more demure, which usually have the girl going down to a bikini at the most.

AV is porn, obviously. A lot of gravure models 'graduate' to AV, or do both at the same time. You also get AV stars doing gravure for their pre-existing fan base. Ex-idols sometimes make the immediate jump to AV but this is super-rare, and brings in megabucks for the 'corruption of the cute and innocent' angle (which I personally think is hot ).

I have used landmark l-mark.com on one occasion. It is mostly AV stars but it is very expensive.

Pururngang has a small handful of AV talent on their roster but you need advanced Japanese to use their services and I can't guarantee that they will take you. I believe a good portion of the Ikebukuro hotel health services do have some AV stars but they don't take gaijin and if they do, they don't openly advertise that they do. If they for some reason like you (which has been the case with me so far in that part of Tokyo), like you show you have street smarts in regards to the business and got the communication skills, they take you. I also believe that Cutie Bomb (1919ikebukuro.com) does have some stars as well but even though they say they don't take Gaijin, me and a short number of other members here have been an exception as long as you have advanced Japanese communication skills.

I believe at some point Happy Berry also had some AV stars working for them as well. But use the site that Meiji provided and you can know where you can get some AV talent. A good percentage of them will be working in Yoshiwara but they can be expensive and if in the event they do accept foreign customers, expect to pay a surcharge.

It's not about economics, but about communication. It's not just communicating with the reception staff but communication with the girl, too. Money does not always talk though some soapland providers like Landmark and Fantasy do a gaijin surcharge. Just because the staff may like you, they can't guarantee the girls are willing to take you as a customer which is sometimes the case. Like some girls may not like things a certain way and they may not be able to express that. It's for their safety and to avoid misunderstandings.

Some places relax their 'no gaijin' policy when the economy is rough. From the amount of reviews I've seen come in here, it's very relaxed right now, all things considered. Japan isn't a 3rd world economy, so there aren't a ton of girls begging for US dollars or whatever. Between that and the polite racism that exists in Japanese society against non-Japanese, there's not a great chance that someone that speaks no Japanese (and doesn't make an attempt to do so) is going to get serviced at a place that is a Japanese shop.
