Tattoo Friendly Japan

Well, if they allowed Western people with tattoos while not allowing Japanese people with tattoos that would be racist, right? :D

But yeah, it is possible for a foreigner to join in and there have been some. My rental agreement states I cannot be affiliated with them, and that's the only reason I haven't joined yet.
My rental agreement says no karaoke but I sing at the top of my lungs every single day.

So you take your lungs out, stand on them and sing? I got to see this! By the way, how would they know you have a karaoke machine?

you can have music, just make sure there's no TV with words that tell you what to sing when to sing. ;-)
Just as a side note, the gym I go to allows tattoos, they just have to be under 15cm x 15cms (which mine are), but they have to be covered at all times. The logic there is mind boggling, how would they know if you were covering much larger tattoos ?

Also, because of this absurd rule, I've attached a picture of the outfit I wore to the gym today (despite the heat). I really love my gym, but I might need to find a new one that allows tattoos for the summer months so that I can wear something without sleeves while I'm crunching my life away.

..your photo seemed familiar, now I’ve realized who you remind me of :)

That outfit (with a few modifications), your new hairstyle, a couple of gun props and this studio http://www.freshstudio.jp/space/ would make for a kickass photoshoot. :D

That black and teal studio space is like a dream ! I feel like I was born to be photographed in my gym clothes before it.

I'm going to send this link to a couple of my photographer pals and see if anyone is down to shoot for fun / portfolio shots there.

: )

Will post a face obscured one someday if it pans out.

Thanks for showing me the studio of my dreams.

Yeah, for gyms I just go by the rule "if they don't see the tattoo then I don't have it". Unless you're hands or neck/face are done its pretty easy to just cover up.

For sento I'd say probably 30% or so are cool with tattoos. I like the ones that say "Ill-mannered customers prohibited" - they are fine with tattoos (and even yakuza) they just want everyone to get along. Watch out for the tattoo-friendly guide sites though - I've been led astray a few times on those and had to chill in the car while everyone else got cleaned up. They're a good starting place but by no means totally comprehensive.

I think that the public sentos have to let you in no matter if you have tattoos or not. They are also very cheap and some are nice and new.

Meh I have accepted that I will be looked down upon. It sucks that I can not go to certain onsens but either way, I still like to show off and the looks the public gives me while looking at my tats is mostly intrigue but I do get looks of disgust. All my tattoos tell a story and unless you’re familiar with what they already mean, you’ll be lost. It’s funny because I have quite a few offensive tattoos that unless I tell you what it is you’ll be none the wiser.

I don't think I've ever even seen a public sento - all the ones I've ever been to have been privately owned. I'll have to check them out!

Yes they are great. I think they all have to charge the same, about 420 yen or something.

I went to one in Okubo with my friend who has tattoos. It was very clean and nice looking and had fun baths. Downsides was that it was small and quite crowded. No problem with tattoos, the other women there were even complimenting my friend’s tattoos.

At the moment the regulated price in Tokyo is 460 yens. That's the maximum, they are getting subsidies and have to then agree not to charge more. They can however charge extra for extra services like sauna.

As it is a public governmental service they need to let everyone in. Some of them do have limited hours for tattooed folks though.
