Random pictures in japan you took!

Yeah, somewhat but not quite the same... Also some places north of the Chuo Sen in Kichi Joji and Golden Gai a little bit too. Places under the tracks around Shinjuku and Yurakucho as well. But none of them quite catches the old Tokyo street life feeling imo. Getting nostalgic in my old age I guess.

Some still remain off Kichijoji station's north exit, but yes, I remember most of them were demolished in the early 80s to make a space for the bus terminal.

I wanted to make a trip back this month, but I was overruled at the office. Work just piles up in the fourth quarter.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to return later this year.
Here are some photos from one of my favourite places in Kyoto when I visited in October last year. Yes, it’s Kyoto Station.

The ranks and ranks of vending machines and (mostly) green pay phones were a part of the scenery mostly gone too.

Who here, on TAG, still has vivid memories of Tokyo in the 90s and even 80s or before?

@Wwanderer , it wasn't just Tokyo it was most of Japan... My 1st trip to Japan was in 1991 and I flew into Osaka Itami (Kansai not built yet) I stayed at the Osaka Airport Hotel, where I was just a few inches/cm from touching both walls with my arms stretched out.. bed came to mid calf when I layed down... and 900JPY coffee there...:D It was a good vibe and people were amazingly friendly... but lots has changed since then... Mobile Phone proliferation, Social Media killing socialization, and conservative government propaganda as well as USA becoming less and less liked all over the world because of their questionable actions.... Yes, I'm getting older and no I don't want for the "good ole' days" I just would like things to be a bit more "Normal"
People use Apps to pick up girls now - but many of the apps have fakes, scams, rubbish... Photoshopped, False images, etc... Even people using pics from 20 years ago ? ?

Human to Human connection seems to be more elusive as time goes by... I mean now you can go to brothels in parts of the world and pay to bang a Silicon Love Doll... ewwwwww unless that's your thing (not you specifically):D Seems many of the folks on TAG were not even born yet when I first ventured here... which is OK.. I like the place I am in this life... just not soo fond of some of the surroundings... or maybe better put.. the twits and wankers :p Thanks for jogging those memories... :) I'm sure if there was a post started "First Time In Japan" and people listed their experience you would see a big difference from experienced travelers and the newbies :D Would be some fascinating reading for sure.

Cool - I grew up with Cheech and Chong movies.... :)

I grew up with Cheech & Chong Albums.... :D:D:D Big Bambu has a Album sized Rolling Paper in it... which was used to roll a "Fatty" I was just a bystander mind you  observing my surroundings... hmmmm wonder why I got the munchies sooo bad... :p Had to be that 2nd Hand Smoke...

FYI:

Yep, you're right...not just Tokyo. In my early times here, I was all over the country; in more recent years I seldom get out of the Tokyo area, maybe once per year or less. I have fallen into the habit of using "Tokyo" and "Japan" almost interchangeably, which is pretty silly.

My first time was in `86, really in the heart of The Bubble, and `90 was the first year I was in-country for a substantial fraction of the year.

Nice idea for a thread; this discussion really doesn't fit in this thread. You should start one.

I wish I had some of my photos from those years in digital form so I could post them here, but of course I was using film...no digicams.

Btw, that last picture is Tokyo seen from Earth-orbit on a clear night, a crisp winter night I'd bet.

Sometimes a QR/EK night flight from Narita flies directly over Tokyo. Though from a much lower vantage point than a satellite’s, the view from the flight window is still spectacular.

Good morning, comrades.
The fourth quarter is always the busiest time where I work. Thanks to the wider adoption of video-conference technology, I don’t have to travel as much like before. Still, the work can weigh me down when Christmas is just around the corner and all I can think about is another trip to Japan.
So I pulled up this photo from my phone after another 19-hour grind. It’s from a recent visit to Shinjuku Gyoen. This image sort of reminds me of obligations and other stuff that I do to make a living ... to survive.
In my mind, I here Robert Frost’s words from a poem I learned back in school decades ago — “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
