So at about 1 pm today. I get a direct message to my phone from Hipness informing me of a new girl that have working there.

I am completely pissed at this. It is an absolute breach of privacy and I doubt if I will ever frequent there again.

Did anyone else get the notification about Mango chan?

Have not gotten anything from Hipness, but I haven't used them recently. Have gotten several SMS spam from their sister shop though.

Wow.... That's not good at all.
I hope you address this issue with them.

I would love to, but being very upset and not having the vocabulary to express the problem, I don’t think I would make a good job of it. I was kinda hoping tag had some connections.

AFAIK all the shops will keep your phone number in their database. So it is a good idea never to call them from your main phone.

Yes, this is standard. It helps both ways as a repeat customer, etc, but for the last seven years with every company I have used, including Hipness, there has been unbroken unspoken company client confidentiality. Until today anyway.

Oh, sure... we can certainly lodge a complaint. That's pretty easy.

FWIW, certain agencies send out coupons by email... if you are registered on their site. But, it's pretty clear that they won't call or message you unless you are not showing up for an appointment. They will email you (opt out possible) the coupons.

As our sms posts to clients are automated using the phone numbers submitted to us by clients, we can of course remove those clients from our mailing list.

However, as we delete all data regarding clients name’s etc, we are unable to remove specified numbers unless we know which customers are requesting the stoppage of sms communication.

Therefore, we would be grateful if (as you cannot provide information on those clients due to privacy), you could ask those customers involved to email us directly with the phone number they wish removing. We can then hastily remove said information from our mailing list. We can be reached at info@hipness.jp anytime.

We appreciate and value all of our customers, and are extremely appreciative of the response you have given regarding their privacy.

We hope to hear from, and resolve all this matters post haste reliant on the customers getting in contact with us.

I have not yet replied yet, but I will suggest a default opt-out setting instead of default opt-in.

Sorry guys. :(

Yeah, that should be the expected way to go for any business. And of course more so for any business sensitive for privacy.

But to me at least the answer reads like they don't really think they did nothing wrong. So basically just by calling them they think they get the right to do whatever they like with your number.

Do they take your phone number at the door, or is it only when you call to make a booking?

Automatically when you call to make a booking.

I've experienced this too. I was taken aback by the practice and then had a less than enjoyable experience with their provider. Probably won't be using them again.

Finally some one asked! I got a similar one yesterday. I freaked out too. But i was browsing their page in incongnito mode, sharing a girls profile to a friend of mine. How the heck do they get to know that was my question too.

Damn. It's worth repeating that whenever possible, use multiple email accounts, multiple phone numbers (VoIP or a cheap prepaid SIM), multiple Twitter (if you have multiple phone numbers to get past the crazy validations these days), blah blah blah, and Incognito mode or different browsers for different purposes and hey, the extreme is HyperV / VM for you naughty needs =)

In accordance with Personal Information Protection Law (個人情報保護法), they are REQUIRED to get explicit permission (opt in) to allow them to use your personal info (phone number) for a limited and specific purpose (marketing notifications.)
Even if you GIVE them your phone number they still need explicit permission to text you like this.
Not just dick move, clearly and explicitly illegal.

Thanks for making the extra effort - I didn't have time to go look that up in detail, but bookmarked now... ;)

Not really clear what happened in your case. Going from incognito mode to sending you an SMS message out the blue is pretty damn impossible. Also it’s not clear how you shared a link with your friend.

You should just turn off caller ID before you call any of these seedy places. You have to remember to turn it back on after though.

The thing is the outcall places don't accept orders without caller id. This is for the safety of the girl and understandable.

What i don't understand is why they don't get rid of the number after the girl gets back from the meeting.

Then get yourself a shoebox full of burner phones. Use it once and then throw it under a speeding Shinkansen - Warubuta Style!
