I know this thread is about favourite documentaries, but QUINCY — a new doc about legendary jazz musician, record producer and arranger Quincy Jones — looks to be special and could soon be high on top of my all-time faves list.
What a career and tremendous lust for life. Also impressed that he was a partner of Nastassja Kinski in the 90s and that the wonderful actress Rashida Jones is his daughter.

So much good stuff posted here. Only thing I can add off the top of my head is a Doc called "Cocksucker Blues" and it's all about the 1974 Rolling Stones tour.

Anything by Ken burns is excellent

I know it’s not the same as feature length, but Vice / Vice News makes an excellent 20-30 minutes of news and sometimes serial reporting; the occupation of Crimea was some intense primary reporting.

My absolute favorite few minutes on the internet seem to come from Jon Bois, who is is a sports journalist, kinda.

This may honestly be my favorite work of his ever; NCAA basketball, The Illiad, Bruegel (the elder’s) Tower of Babel series, and Scandinavian atmospheric music at the end. And it’s a documentary at that.

As for Netflix, I do like seeing where the future lies, so anything involving large-scale science projects has my attention, as well as lighter stuff like Cowspiracy or the one about fast-fashion manufacturing. Do the laundry, clean the floors, do some ironing and cooking - and like, watch someone break down the national Ignition Center’s pursuit of fusion, cool.

I’m not yet a history buff or into crime, but there are some good suggestions up here.

Also to that guy’s credit, I don’t even really like/watch sports. Just great story craft and informative writing.

god I was wondering how/where the came into being. Like, way more than half of my crew is under 25 and still mourning the death of Vine, and like boom Takeuchi Mariya memes the last two weeks

Just finished a documentary called "Three Identical Strangers" interesting story with a Fkd up twist.... which seems rare in documentaries....

I recently watched the documentary Magnus on Netflix. It follows a child prodigy who became a chess grandmaster at 13 as he vies to become World Champion at 22. He is often called the Mozart of chess as chess comes so naturally to him and he often uses intuition to guide his moves.

ELVIS PRESLEY: THE SEARCHER is the most in-depth documentary about the King’s music, life and legacy I have ever encountered.
On this thread, I’ve opened up about my keen interest in music documentaries and this new Elvis doc I saw on HBO delivers the goods about the impact of his music.
It helps that the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Priscilla Presley, Robbie Robertson of The Band and the late great Tom Petty share significant insights about the King’s music, life and career.
I found it refreshing that this documentary did not sensationalize the King’s physical health issues and eventual death. He was really feeling hurt, down and alone toward the end, in 1976, according to Petty.
Please check it out.

"The Dirt" was pretty good all in all.

Anything by Louis Theroux
The Queen of Versailles
Leaving Neverland
The Defiant Ones (Netflix)

Don’t bother with Surviving R Kelly- it’s so slow.

Finally caught ROBIN WILLIAMS: COME INSIDE MY MIND (2018) on HBO.

I can’t help but get misty-eyed viewing this absolutely funny, excellent and vulnerable human being. I remember seeing him cycling around San Francisco a few times. He lived in Napa Valley, north of the city.

Out of all the film roles he did, what has resonated with me the most was his character Sean in GOOD WILL HUNTING (1997) — this line, especially: “You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to.”

Here’s the trailer:

Looks like the full documentary got taken down. :(

For those who recognize the creepy faked deep voice of Elizabeth Holmes, the voice of the 17 year old chick featured in this 5 min documentary sounds very much like her but minus the fake creepy aspect... she’s for real:
