Sooo, I’m going to Tokyo this July and I’m still 19 by then. I wanna have drinks and such at dinner and I’m wondering if they check your id if I were to order a beer or something with the food? Tyty

If you look young, probably. If you look old enough as a foreigner, you don't get carded. I've never been carded or remember many get carded.

Chances are that as long as you act normal about it (not nervous) and look like you're older than 20 (don't dress like a kid) you won't be carded. But because the universe loves to screw with people, don't be surprised if it happens.

Slightly off topic, but I think that Japan should lower its drinking age. The voting age in Japan is now 18, I believe. So, I would argue the drinking age should be 18 at most. If you are old enough to vote, then you should be old enough to drink.

Hell, you might even want to drink to either celebrate election results or to drown your sorrows:LOL:

Of course, in certain parts of Europe the drinking age is even lower especially for beer and wine.

You should see at the local universities how much they drink on-campus during the Gakuensai (students festivals) and nobody give a damn... so I think you’re safe

That depends on the university and how many of their students have recently died in drunken stupors.

But you are right, outside of the campus nobody cares how much an 18 year old drinks and every place is happy to serve them as long as they have money.

Yep, back in the late 80s when I first arrived here, I had a bartending job for a while.

A high school student - in uniform - came in and ordered a double whiskey. I asked my boss how to ask him for ID, the boss said "if he can pay for the drink, he can have the drink".

No surprise, kid sucked it back like it was cold OJ on a hot day, and blew chunks on the floor.

During those days I used to tell everyone the legal drinking age in Japan is 12 or if you have a friend then it's 8. Because that's how much height you needed to push the buttons for a whiskey vending machine.

It was crazy huh? Imagine those machines in Europe or America..

Nowadays it's not as wild as in the 80s particularly in those of private universities....nevertheless I happened to be in the gakuensai of the Tokyo University of Arts some years ago and found it was really fun - a lot of booze with good music. It would be a nice event to go with your SB. It usually takes place in the first week of September.

Great idea!
Well I went with her to 3 or 4 happening bar events and recently (for her bday) to a strip party where ladies-clients can strip too , so I suppose we are now ready to swallow a Gakuensai :)
