You do not have to look far to grab a beer and can walk around in public drinking it.

....yeah, but they are shut down from Dec 31 to Jan 5th or so, so.... :)

. Technologically advanced country

. Lots of exciting things to do, see, and eat/ Interesting culture

. Cleanliness (relatively).

In comparison to other countries in Asia, like Thailand or Korea. However, the Japanese can do some nasty stuff, and getting drunk and puking in public is one of them.

. Lots of hot, cute, and slim women

. Greater safety than many Western countries

. Onsens

1. Low crime.
2. Family Mart food for cheap. Compare that to the hot dogs, taqueria, and sausage biscuits in American has stations.
3. Beautiful natural scenery. Perfect for those who love the outdoors.
4. Absence of overweight women.
5. Historical landmarks nearly everywhere you go.
6. Low priced booze and cigarettes ( relative to U.S.).

Regarding food. One thing I appreciate about food in Japan is the quality of low priced food here, there's many good examples but the teishoku places spring to mind. I just had a modest portion of steak on a hot plate with bean sprouts and a couple pieces of potato, miso soup, brown rice, pickles and a cabbage salad, all for 820yen.

Recently convenience stores have really expanded the availability of healthy food, individual serve pack of nuts and dry fruit (Lawson), single pieces of fruit, salads etc.

Also it has to be said-the high average I.Q. does play a role in my opinion. It's nice being in a society in which the lowest common denominator isn't always catered. I'm by no means a "smart" man, however the idiocracy where I'm living now is extreme.

Japan is on the whole much nicer, in my opinion.

Seeing as how a recent study found that the average American believes he/she has ABOVE average intelligence, I can understand the problem!

I know this sounds crazy but I actually enjoy the petty 'racism' in Japan. I feel that people are intimidated by me because I'm a big black male, and that gives me a feeling of power.. lol.

Here are some that may not have been mentioned yet.
Some of the things below are, of course, in comparison to other countries, so you may not feel the same depending on where you're from.

Highs:
- reliable plumbing systems
- superior delivery systems (being able to designate date and time of when you want things delivered, and getting accurate notices)
- being able to drink tap water without worrying about getting sick
- being able to call over any waiters/waitresses at restaurants
- being part of a country that foreigners rave about
- overwhelming amount of information and scientific researches conducted to compare products in fashion/beauty magazines
- hot springs and baths in general
- 100 yen stores and their high quality and innovation
- how homosexuality and transgenderism are openly portrayed and accepted (for the most part) in media

Lows:
- the fact that we have trillions in debt and that our future is doomed
- no leniency (everything must be by the book, or people can't handle it)
- people can't seem to have open/honest conversations unless they are drunk
- how foreigners see Japanese women as being easy, and the fact that there are women that live up to the reputation
- the fact that it's still so predominantly a male-oriented country, and we are so slow to adapt and move with the changing world
- the fact that bribery and bid-rigging are so still so common in construction industry

LOL!

Just last night, I was out driving to pick-up some food and as I was turning the corner to go back home, there was this big black dude standing on the corner that I've never seen before. He was standing on the opposite corner from where I was turning left, which was what, 20-30 meters away? He still looked huge from that distance....

It was dark outside, this big black guy and then these other regular Japanese folk... they wanted to cross the street but clearly, they saw this guy at the corner and they just turned and walked back, lol..... I got out of the line of sight, so I couldn't see which way he went, but it was amusing. (I could care less, just observing...)

At least in my area, you rarely, if ever, see a truly black person. We've got white, Asian (ch, kr, jp, vn) and some Indian. But, that's really about all.

Lows:
As a foreigner at my work I am often excluded from paticipating in particular decisions and social events, and I am entrusted with fewer duties and responsibilities compared with my Japanese counterparts. It often feels like I'm ‘invisible' since as long as I'm doing what's expected, no one really offers any praise or criticism.

Don't mean to be a smartass, there are just two sides to the same coin- advantages and disadvantages to the status we have as gaijin in our particular situations.

- how foreigners see Japanese women as being easy, and the fact that there are women that live up to the reputation

This doesn't actually come from foreign men that live in Japan, but more from the media (both Japanese and Western) by creating sensational mythology to sell books and from politicians appealing to xenophobia.

Then there is a bit of catty jealousy from the opposite sex. That is foreign/Western women upset with foreign/Western men dating Asian or Japanese women. And Japanese or Asian men upset with Japanese/Asian women dating foreign/Western men.

There are many Japanese women that are afraid of foreigners, believing the most negative stereotypes, like they are criminals, rapists, or all playboys. They may overreact, like think foreign men say they are yellow cabs and other such ridiculous non-sense. The paranoia of too many Japanese women can be extreme. Western guys in Japan, are usually not, calling Japanese women yellow cabs. This is often foreigners that have NEVER been to Japan, or have NEVER met native Japanese people, and repeating something in the media. Often this is not directed at just Japanese women, Asian women in general. And the other culprit is often Japanese guys, being jealous or territorial. These type of guys don't see it a problem for them to lust after or date White or Western women, but will try to control all Japanese women like they are their personal propery or not allowed choice.

The reality is Japanese women are very difficult for many foreign men. They can't speak the language, different culture, don't understand the body language, don't have the chance to meet them (not from the neighborhood, college, or same job).

I had a couple of foreign friends upon arriving to Japan, that did not have a date for their first 6 MONTHS. My other friends and I had to explain to these guys how to talk to and date Japanese women. And it was difficult helping those guys. In no way are Japanese women "easy", actually they are more or way too difficult.

Seems to only apply in Japan.

Highs: easy access to concerts and beers!

They're upset because tons of foreign men come over here with yellow fever and a pretty racist view of what Asian women should act like and the Western women get dismissed out of hand. Fortunately, most of those guys have at least some of the scales drop from their eyes when they realize they can't just walk up to a Japanese woman and have her swoon. Then again, Charisma Man was a thing for a reason...

This one is kind of tricky. While there isn't the religious zealotry of America that ends with gay men being beaten to death in alleyways in the South, Japan is really not all that on board with LGBT issues. At best, I think Japan tolerates different sexual orientations and gender identities as long as they don't get "uppity", but they're also the butt of countless jokes and TV panel shows. As soon as gays, cross-dressers, and transsexuals stop acting like dancing bears and start demanding equal treatment and civil rights, the far right comes out of the woodwork and starts screaming about how the gay lifestyle "attacks the traditional family" and threatens the birth rate. Because forcing gay people into hetero relationships and making them breed is apparently a solution? N.B., my low point about most Japanese being incapable of forming a non-laughable rhetorical argument.

So now that I've had another go at the low points...lol

GOOD:

-Food. Oh my god, the food. Even western food and convenience store food is incredibly good provided you don't aim for bottom quality.
-The fact that I can flush toilet paper like a civilized person. I travel to Taiwan a lot and the garbage can full of shit wipes makes me gag every time.
-No open container laws! WOO! conbini drinking!
-Living without a car has improved my sanity markedly. Whenever I go back to the States, I dread the hour long car drives.
-Though I don't date most Japanese women for other reasons, a lot of them do make nice eye candy. I miss butts though...
-Precisely because there are so many yellow-fever Charisma Man types, the supply of under-appreciated Western women is plentiful and where I do the majority of my dating.
-Low crime. Aside from clubs, seedy establishments, and a few choice places around town, I could pretty much fall asleep anywhere and wake up with all my belongings. My visiting friends are always astonished to see small children riding the subway alone or in groups together. That kind of safety is invaluable.
-Customer service, while robotic and incapable of doing anything but following their programming, is top notch under normal circumstances. A colleague of mine once lost his expensive suit coat on a train. JR staff coordinated a five man operation to find and return it.
