Going to club/bar alone

Would it be safe?
If you control the alcohol, then no worries before the third shot. I agree with avoiding Kabukicho and Roppongi. If Shibuya doesn’t fit you, that limits many options. Have you been in Camelot? Akasaka, Ebisu (WTD) are good alternatives. BTW, you may also come to my apartment, it’s big, safe -24/7 concierge, service and security, temperature checkup available-, terrace with skyline views to Fujisan, good music, selected bar, high speed WiFi, pleasant and sophisticated conversation... and my Japanese girlfriend would be happy as she likes foreign girls :D Sorry, I had to try It. ;)

its totally normal, no problem.
Id recommend jumping in a taxi and heading to ebisu though. Much better bars and people. Still close to where you are. unless of course you like the middle age white guys in chinos with no social skills.
ebisu is relatively cooler, and at 20 you are already too old for shibuya.
enjoy!

So do the middle-aged white guys in Ebisu have social skills or corduroy pants?

Never tried clubs or bars except the few ones I’ve been to in Roppongi with partners. I just found out about WTD and it looks pretty good I might go soon.

Can I take a rain check on that? lol

So what clubs/bars do you guys recommend in Ebisu, for the middle aged white guy? Asking for a friend :D

“What the Dickens?” was created for the melanin deficient middle aged gents. Or if not they surely took it over!

WTD is a melting pot of pants ..... a safe haven for caucasian chino wearers amongst the tsunami of "cool" that floods Ebisu. Watching a tribe of chino clad American bankers singing along to "Sailing" by a Japanese Rod Stewart look-a-like is one of those Tokyo moments. ("No Chinos, No Life")

But what pants should a middle-aged* caucasian** wear when visiting Ebisu?

I agree with everyone that Roppongi should be avoided, but Kabukicho? Of course you have to stay away from the annoying lowlife touts and only go places you know, but I had my most fun night outs drinking in Kabukicho. There is no other place in Tokyo with so many strange special interest bars.....maybe not smart and sophisticated, but if you like subculture, this is the best place to hang out.

There are two sides to Roppongi. If you draw a line on a map diagonally through the main intersection bisecting the Koban and the Almond cafe, you basically split Roppongi into 2 different scenes. You also have Nishi Azabu just down the hill. A single 20 year old woman shouldn't encounter problems on the Hills/Midtown side of the line.

I am not a fan of K-cho or the Golden Gai. The GG Full of tourists who read it was cool, alternative and BoHo in their guidebooks or the inflight magazine. Piss Alley - check. Robot restaurant - check. Golden Gai - check.

Of course there are super touristy spots in Kabukicho, but you have awful places like that in most places around Tokyo. I am also not a fan of the ones you mentioned, because they are crowded with tourists and probably also quite expensive for what you get....but just because they exist, it doesn't discredit the rest of Kabukicho. There are hundreds of little bars in the upper floors a bit away from the central square, where you will never find any tourists.

Ahem, I will be the publicly open “knight” to be happy to take you to Yebisu and hop around the few classy bars I know there if you want to, as friendly acquaintances. Err, I’m not joking. I legitly wanna hang out in Yebisu sometime after being locked down all this time.

What about 28 year old, caucasian who doesn't own chino pants, living in Ebisu?.
Maybe I have an edge up because of this...lol

28, single, living in Ebisu .... the world is your oyster champ.

You will hit some home runs provided you don't look and smell like the Elephant Man. But other factors will impact your batting average and retention rate.

Ebisu, akasaka and Roppongi (with some common sense) have served me well with both the locals and the westeners :)

Bar tram in Ebisu always did a decent cocktail.

WTD is for the live music, not for the pick up scene. No Cover Charge as well
Bar Martha is for the music and drinks... chill vibe and does not allow loud people.
HUB - well.... need I say more ?
CAVO - a "wine" bar of sorts (street level of WTD) can be hit or miss depending on the crowd..

Those are all relatively safe to venture out on your own and you get a mix of people attending.

Enjoy and let us know how it went please....

I've been to this shithole of a bar once, paid 1000 for a pint of flat guiness with some terrible band playing 2 meters in front of me.

Blasphemy ! They only have great bands there! Don’t ya think @just4fun ?

To be fair, I've seen some absolutely horrible acts there. And some absolutely brilliant ones. It's a mixed bag, and that's what a live music bar should be. If it wasn't for the shitty bands, you'd never truly appreciate the really good ones.

Worst act I ever saw there had to be Jimmy Angel, a washed up late 50's teen idol that supposedly got in trouble with the mob in Vegas and moved out to Asia to avoid a shallow grave or an FBI investigation, depending on what night he was telling the story and how drunk he got. Played with his guitar unplugged (real guitarist in the shadows), the worst Elvis wig I've ever seen, and went off on tirades about respect when the 20something girls in the place chuckled at how ridiculous it all was.
