Is a quarantine period still enforced?
Are there citizenships blocked from entering the country?

My understanding is that no tourists are allowed in.
And worst, a lot of visa owning foreigners aren't allowed in either.

And to answer the question, yes two weeks self quarantine is required for people coming into Japan

Yeah, it's like the opposite of Hotel California, you can check out any time but you won't get back.

Pretty much the only way is to check @Sudsy's list, find a country that's not there and spend 14 days in that country before flying (directly!) to Japan. And no, I don't think North Korea works.

Well, there went my summer vacay.:( FML

Mongolia is not on the list AND has direct flights to Japan (I think, not sure)

You are correct; Mongolian Airlines flights from Ulaanbaatar to Narita every week.

The next problem is to get to Mongolia as they seem to have banned all incoming foreigners.

ok, Cambodia maybe?

Cambodia banned foreigners as well. I checked like two weeks ago and there was no Asian country you can currently enter as a foreigner. Many of them had already extended the ban till end of August.

Well at least there are people from a few countries who can theoretically enter Japan but refuse entry to the Japanese. Its not just the other way round :)

Are you sure you need to fly in on a direct flight?

You would still need a visa to enter. Afaik any sort of VISA waivers are cancelled, so even if you were from one of those countries, which might be difficult as tourist.

One viable approach to get in might be to get yourself a passport with the name Carlos Ghosn on it. You might even be allowed to stay for a while;)

Did that flight last year.
Not a bad flight. But poor old Mongolian airlines bought a 737-max that was parked on the tarmac with engine covers on.
Ulaanbaatar is a bit of a shut hole though.

Nothing is going to change in the short term.
I find it kind of strange that many Japanese take the Vietnam, Thai, Australia/New Zealand bubble as a done deal.

People seem to forget it is a bilateral arrangement and not just Japan’s call.

Without a vaccine or effective treatment, borders are gonna stay closed for a while yet.

The route I understand still works involves a total of 6 weeks of quarantines (at your own expense) to get from the US to Japan, but does have regular scheduled routes.

Interestingly, neither existing visas or visa exemptions from the US seem to be suspended, so Americans that can find a route in via a third country should theoretically be able to get in on a visa waiver.

Guam apparently doesn't count as US for purposes of Japan's entry ban, however you would need to get to Guam via Hawaii, involving 2 weeks quarantine, quarantine 2 weeks in Guam, then the final 2 weeks in Japan. I don't think anyone except the truly desperate would bother with the route though due to time and expense.

UA196 is still operating regular service 3 or 4 days a week.

In order to all you guys to have very updated situation....

I just arrived (yesterday's afternoon) via Haneda Airport from Chicago USA. I traveled with United Airlines, and it was a large airplane with a capacity of around 300 passengers and there were no more than 40 passengers in the whole plane.
All Japanese excluding a guy who is married to a Japanese woman.

Before landing you have to fill up three different documents, asking places where you were before arriving to Japan. Your address, phone number in Japan. Also who is going to pick you up at the airport, as all type of public transportation (train, bus, taxi) is not allowed for the arriving passengers. There are only two ways to leave the airport (renting a car or someone will pick you up in a private vehicle).

Covid-19 PCR test is a must immediately after you get out of the airplane. Test results will be send to you or they will call you in around a week.

If you live outside "Kanto area", you must do a 14 days quarantine in a designated place by a health officer. And all expenses must be covered by yourself.

If you live in Tokyo or Kanagawa for example, you have to do a self quarantine in your home. I have to stay and remain at home until the 25th of July.

Only Japanese nationals or someone who is married to Japanese woman/man are allowed to enter Japan at this moment. The list of forbidden countries is around 129 right now.
