« the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. »

The problem of jobs disappearing has been a lot longer than 25 years. Try more like 35-40 years. These problems started in the 80s. The 90s compounded them. I grew up in the northeast. The area I grew up in had lots of production either in furniture or electronic assembly. By the time I graduated high school in the very early 90s these jobs were 90% gone. Most of them went to the south/midwest, and they didn't stay there for long. These were 9-5 mostly non-degree needing jobs. These jobs didn't come back.

Same happened in many other countries , unfortunately. We all enriched China (and the companies that put their factories there) by wanting ever cheaper products with no or little tariffs and yes that’s something on which Trump is right.

(Just regarding the timeline, Obama said this in 2008 I suppose, since It was during his first campaign... so he meant from the 80s )

For a speech from 2008 the 80s were just about 25years back;)

You know what? i think he was too candid , but what he said is certainly true for many of those who voted Republican.

And you just revealed why you're such a fanboy of Obama, because you basically admitted you agree with his sneering, elitist view of people who don't agree with your politics. So people who vote Republican do so because they're poor, lost their jobs and therefore end up racist bigots, hating immigrants and clinging to their bibles and guns? Yeah, good luck with that. Do a Google search on GOP voters/supporters/donors, their median incomes, charitable donations and voter reliability if you really want to feel foolish. And if you ever end up stateside again in a normal centrist locality (and not in a communist stronghold left coast city like Berkeley, Seattle or Portland) do yourself a favor and keep those sentiments to yourself.

If you had a better understanding of the American electorate or political dynamic, you'd understand why that sort of snobby, elitist thinking doesn't play well with working-class American voters and, again, why Trump won in 2016. Obviously, I'm not faulting you for not understanding American politics as I have absolutely zero understanding of the politics in other large nations and take absolutely zero effort to educate myself on those because the truth is I just don't care and at the end of the day I don't give a shit who other countries vote for. It has almost zero bearing on me. The degree to which non-Americans fixate on American politics has always fascinated me but I suppose that's because, whether they like to admit it or not, what we do determines what you do and America is always in the lead. That's why I think Obama was such a hit in Europe, because he basically assured them that 1) America sucked, and 2) he'd let the rest of the world dictate what America did from now on (i.e., why he wanted to allow the UN to dictate American foreign policy). Well, that obviously didn't play very well with Americans because Trump is president and most of Obama's attempts at diplomacy and social engineering have been terminated. Again,Trump is president for a reason, and it's not because he was a wonderful candidate.

Honestly, this is getting tiresome and reminding me of why I exited politics to begin with. It's one thing to debate policy issues with D.C. political operatives who actually understand the specifics and realities but it's an entirely different animal trying to reason with foreigners with a hundred different whimsical (and often misguided) foreign opinions on American policy.

If I can be so helpful I will leave you with this advice, and as a former Hill staffer and bi-partisan campaign operative, this is as truthful as I can possibly be. If you are a non-American wasting your time engaged in spirited debate over American politics and policy, please remember:

1) Whatever your opinion may be, no matter how passionate, rest assured that nobody in America gives a shit.

2) Whatever your opinion may be, no matter how passionate, rest assured that you can scream and shout all day long and you will have ZERO impact on American governmental policy. Go ask that autistic mini-cunt, Greta Thunberg, if you have any doubts.

3) Whatever your opinion may be, no matter how passionate, at the end of the day the only thing that matters is money. This is America. Both sides were bought and sold a long time ago. At the end of the day, the deciding factor in politics is the same as business, and that's money. So unless you're willing to throw down seven figures, nobody gives a shit what you think so you're better off saving your energy for other more fruitful endeavors.

I'm going to go numb myself with a few vodka shots and forget I wasted ten minutes writing this. Goodnight, folks.

well if the US president is supposed to be « the leader of the free world » as you guys love to say, then the free world is interested in what’s going on... suck it up. Even Russia and China are, and they have the means to influence your elections, and did so

Besides I know many Americans who are actually interested in how the world sees them (And are appalled by the feedback they get since 2016)

finally, whining about so-called « elitists » and electing (with a minority of votes) a billionaire draft dodger out of Wharton born with a silver spoon in his mouth makes me chuckle a bit, sorry

if anything, you resent that I actually know too much , not too less, about your politics for your liking, and that I challenge your BS .

ps: and for the money part, I’m probably more invested in the US markets than you are, another reason not to be indifferent

Also, 'snobby, elitist thinking'... Pot, kettle, black.

I have yet to meet a politician from (or running for) any level of government that isn't a snobby elitist prick, with the exception of the ones that are just sociopaths.

Occasionally they're a charming snobby elitist prick (Obama, Schwarzenegger, Bill Clinton), occcasionally they're an obnoxious snobby elitist prick (Pelosi, Trump, Hillary Clinton) but they're pretty much always a snobby elitist prick.

well , Hitler , Mao and Stalin started poor and uneducated , they may have had a few flaws but nobody can say they were snobby elitist pricks ... :D

And now do you see why I tired of politics, and why I avoided it and shouldn't have ventured into this thread? Political threads are toxic, and only end up one way. I don't "resent" you for anything. This place is supposed to be a fun exchange of tips for getting our penises played with. Politics ruins everything. We'd all be better off avoiding the topic. We're better off fighting over the vaccine, which should arrive in a month or so.

yeah, I tend to be a tad argumentative sometimes...

no desire to fight over the vaccine though. Hopefully it will happen, hopefully it will be effective, and I don’t give a damn what could be its impact on US elections

Now take care of your lady...
Who knows, she may get fed up of you just watching porn , and bed a Democrat. The horror! :)

You just need to adopt my stance - politicians are all scum, some are merely more charming than others. They all deserve a firing squad.

I think that was a bit unfair. As most of them are very capable of being snobby elitist pricks with strong sociopathic tendencies

... and I’m just an ignorant Frenchy completely dumb about US traditions though :)

Yeah, I am also ashamed how little I know about the traditions of the tribal nations.

well if the US president is supposed to be « the leader of the free world » as you guys love to say

I will start calling POTUS that if he gets me 50% discount on all love hotels in greater Tokyo area. If he can't pull even that he can keep his leadership as well as the freedom.

Yeah but we all know you are from some obscure ex-Soviet dictatorship so it didn’t apply to you anyway :)

What do you mean by "ex"? The one with the most guns gets the best discounts and I have both AK-47 and M1 Carbine.

I never said the two were mutually exclusive, but it is possible for them to be a sociopath without being a snobby elitist prick. Not so much the other way around.

Define successfully as I have never seen a foreigner winning anything in there.

At least not with a pistol, I did manage to get several girls wet with money though.

Comfortably numb?

So, as a staffer/operative, did you have any #metoo moments (as the victim)? any close calls or uncomfortable moments?
