Like many people, I didn't get a spot for a PS5 in Amazon's first round of raffles. I'm still waiting to hear back from Yamada, Nojima and all the rest but I'm not optimistic. I'll probably be able to get my hands on one during the holidays once they bulk up stock.

But I gotta ask...why Japan? This is just a repeat of the Nintendo Switch scarcity all over again. Scalpers can really thrive here. Is it that they genuinely cannot manufacture enough PS5s to keep up with the demand, or is it just to hype up everyone to buy it when it's actually in stock?

I am pretty sure if they could manufacture enough they would. It's not like Sony is known as a company that doesn't want your money. :p

I was hopeful that they'd extend the scalping laws they passed to handle concert tickets and (most recently) masks to other products.

Not too late.

I'd be even happier if they did it AFTER the scalpers extended themselves so they all make a nice loss on shipping and handling.

Yep, this. The logistics of manufacturing and distributing physical consoles are nuts and the materials and components are usually a nightmare to source until those logistics are streamlined.

I unfortunately missed out on Amazon as well, but were they a raffle or first come first serve? I thought they (and Rakuten Books and one other I’m forgetting) were FCFS, while all the others are lottery system.

Although the scarcity means I’m unlikely to get one launch day (then again, other than Switch and BotW, I don’t think there has been a console launch this century with a must-have game also out same day...), I would think the lottery system, which for many retailers does seem to be designed to at least increase the chance that the buyer is an actual person, makes it generally harder for scalpers than in places like the US where there is so much FCFS.

Xbox lottery starts on Friday!!

So I know this was an issue with the switch because some component in it was difficult to come by and was only being manufactured by a few factories.

But what's the deal with the ps5? I know its about 15 times bigger than a smart phone, but surely the parts used to make the newest phone are harder to come by than console parts? Yet those never seem to require a lottery system.

Is there some extremely rare component used in all consoles that majorly delays production?

The new Spider-Man will be on PS4 so I’ll wait until the new games are not on PS4 to buy.

I just want to play GTA but I don't think they even started developing it yet so I guess the next generation GTA will be years away.

Im too shit at gaming for Call of Duty online etc to be any fun.

There’s always the RTX 3090. :p:p Only a handful of hours before launch right now.
Yes, waiting and watching. I didn't even see the "Add to Cart" button on the 3080 version when it launched. I don't care for the 3rd party designs... so hunting FE cards. :p

I must be getting really jaded. I work in the game industry and I have zero desire to buy the PS5, let alone preorder it ... :-(

So, I was able to get it in the shopping cart but the final purchase page timed out and I lost the card. A friend of mine did however get lucky and snag a 3090.
Back to the waiting game... I really wish people wouldn't support the scalpers.

As for PS5, it's a hard pass for me. I still have PS4 stuff I haven't finished. No need to get another box to take up space. :p

+shipping to get it delivered. There’s no direct access from Japan, so it has to be routed from the states. One if the reasons I dislike living in Japan...
