Hey folks.

For those of you homeowners in Japan out there: Im looking for some info on a pest control agency.

About 3 months ago, some random guy showed up at my house and talked to my wife about spraying the house for termites. Ive never had to deal with termites in any of the countries I lived in, and in a neighborhood with relatively new houses, I figured they probably wouldnt be an issue. But I asked the price. This guy wanted 10man + for our house, and we are by no means living in a huge place. That sounds pretty expensive but since I have nothing to compare it to, I figured Id ask here to see if someone has had this experience and if there are any recommendations for companies who do this sort of work. (Inspecting/spraying the house to prevent termite infestation)

I saw a bug which looked like a termite which was flying and crushed it, but now its got me a bit worried.

Thanks for any info anyone has.

Stranger danger! As a general rule anybody who comes uninvited to your house to sell you something is there in order to take advantage of you.

On another note getting the crawl space under your house sprayed against termites is going to cost over 100k normally. What the above mentioned guy did not mention is that if you have a relative new house with proper ventilation you won't be needing to get it sprayed.

Exactly. No legitimate company these days relies on door to door sales. If someone comes to your door with a sales pitch, they are there to steal from you or defraud you.

And yes, I am including NHK in that statement.

I just got that done for my house. It wasn't a door to door sales guy but the housing company suggested it as out house is 7 years old. Think it cost like 250k tho.

If this was any country other than Japan, I would've said this was very obviously a group of thieves casing homes for their next heist. I never had someone approach me about this while living in Japan, but I was also living in a shithole 2DK and not a home so I have to defer to others here. I will say that anyone who pulled this stunt on me in America would be asked to leave the first time and the second would be met with my .45 and a promise that the police were en route and that I'd be retrieving their plate numbers from my numerous security cameras.

But as for termite treatments, I do know a little about that as overseeing related operations is part of my job. A grand (100k) for proper treatment of a detached dwelling is way too low to be legitimate, at least around here. Termites generally invade homes starting from the ground structure, so that generally involves a technician having to crawl around in the awful darkness below your home spraying every single beam. Then, any legitimate company will also install in-ground/underground devices which assist in keeping your soil free of termite tunneling, which is another way they come across your home foundation. Those two services, alone, will cost over $2k stateside, probably more in the $3k-$4k range, depending on the size of the property.

Again, I don't know anything about services in Japan. Maybe they have a fucking motorized Hello Kitty that totters around under our house, squats and pisses pesticide on termites? But a stranger coming to my house, unsolicited, in a nice neighborhood with newer homes offering to protect my home from termites for a thousands bucks? That's when take a cellphone pic of that fucker, promise him it's going to every neighbor and cop pal I can dial in an hour and remind him that I get an automatic upgrade to my NRA Life Membership status and new lapel pin for putting two in the chest and one in the face of anyone dumb enough to break in.

This is absolutely a thing in Japan, most burglaries are done by organized crews here, rather than some drug addled halfwit looking for a quick score.

I would like to see a ban on door-door sales/marketing, a ban on junk mail and a ban on door knocking by any religion/church/sect. It seems out of control here.

I had a roofer ring my bell, he got a surprise when he met a gaijin, and then he tried to tell me in broken English that my roof needed fixing. How the hell would he know! I asked him to tell me what was wrong and show me the problem - but then he gave up with the pitch.

There are quite a few dodgy trades people here trying to scam oldies -- inflated quotes, no paperwork, cash in advance. I was at home once when my landlord was meeting some tradies for some major plumbing work. I wasn't paying much attention but thought the two workmen looked a bit sus. Afterwards, I told the landlord they looked a bit dodgy ... turns out they were putting pressure on the landlord to sign up for the work immediately, pay up in cash in advance, without any paperwork. Maybe they were just looking to scam the owner, but possibly they were also screwing the owner of the plumbing business they may have worked for.

One termite (maybe?) is nothing to get too stressed out about. Google up the "signs of termite infestation" and then take a good look around your house and garden for any signs of infestation.

But then how would I practice all the myriad ways to tell people to fuck off in Japanese?

Years ago when we were barely out of high school, a buddy of mine was having problems with those Jehovah's Witness types stopping by his house on the weekend mornings to do their usual song and dance. The problem for them is this guy was (still is, actually) a fat, disgusting, shameless pervert and slob, and his usual morning routine was wake-n-bake and then masturbate. Not even kidding. His solution to the holy-rollers was to just start answering the door bareass naked with his bong in hand and dick still at half-mast. Needless to say, they decided he was beyond saving and stopped coming by.

His house was also near a school, and at one point he had a problem with kids parking their cars and blocking his driveway. Same solution, stand by the front screen door masturbating and watching the girls park their cars in front of his house. They stopped parking in front of his house.

You could always try that routine.

I had the same problem with Jehovah's here in Hawaii. Problem is the ones that have come to my home always have an elderly women or man and smoking hot young women. Even when you mention you're not interested they still push the issue. So one day when this elderly lady and smoking hot young woman stopped in with their normal tactics I was having none of it, but the elderly women still persisted while the younger women seemed embarassed by the harassment. So I told the old lady, ok ok, but she has to stay outside while the younger woman spoke with me inside my house. Well, the young woman smiled, but the older lady immediately grabbed her hand and off they went. Never had visits anymore. Years later I worked with a Jehovah woman who doesn't push the issue at work unless you ask about it and she says they shouldn't be persistent, but yes, I most likely got blacklisted as a home not to go to. First time I enjoyed being placed on a blacklist.

Appreciate the replies folks.

I had my wife call a different company from the one who approached her to ask for a quote/inspection. Ill be sure to ask for the inspector to take photos of anything he may find so that there isnt any fishy nonsense going on. (Cause that never happens in this country....)

Coincidence .... the roofer turned up today. Haven't seen him for a year or two. Problem with my roof covering again. He must have forgotten Mr. Gaijin lives here.

He must just walk around door knocking on rainy days ... no van, no gear, no ladder, empty handed.
