To sum up what’s going on in the US I tell my Japanese friends to just watch the Southpark episode where Cartmen goes on the Dr Phil show as a troubled teen.
“I do what I want!!”

No hornet's nest from me. Absolutely. I don't just support mask mandates, I happily do my part to enforce them. Around here it's state law by emergency order of the governor and you can receive a criminal citation for failing to wear a mask any any indoor public setting. That includes a lot of the areas I oversee for work. Anti-maskers show up (and most of the time it's maskless, shirtless asshole tourists from Florida or some other shithole red state), they're met by police. I make sure it's all caught on surveillance camera, laughing the whole time, then send my staff down to meet the police and issue criminal trespass citations so I can have them arrested if they ever come back.

More than that, I'm all about VACCINE MANDATES now. I want every fucking anti-vaxxer excluded from as much of society and private business as possible. The courts have already ruled that private businesses can likely force employees to get vaccinated, but I'm a big fan of going much further than that. I want to see vaccination requirements to board a commercial airplane; enter any indoor private business, gym, facility, etc.; I want vaccine requirements for all staff and students at any public educational institution and for all state, city and municipal employees; I want private insurance companies to be able to raise rates or cancel coverage for anti-vaxxers; and I want hospitals to give preferential treatment and space to immunized COVID patients who still happen to get sick over any anti-vaxxer.

And the best part is, I'm probably close to getting my way. News outlets today are reporting that the FDA is going to issue full approval for the Pfizer vaccine on Monday morning, meaning it will be absolutely and outright legal to enact sweeping vaccine mandates for pretty much all of society in the U.S. It's going to be hilarious, because the primary anti-vaxxer argument for refusing to get vaccinated (other than "this is a fake pandemic," or "it's just the flu with 99.9999999999% survival rate" or, my favorite, that Bill Gates is putting microchips in the Pfizer vaccine) is that the vaccines are "experimental."

Not anymore. I was actually just discussing this with my boss, because we're preparing to enact a zero-tolerance vaccination mandate for all our employees beginning Tuesday. Get vaccinated, or fuck off and find a job elsewhere.

God help us if people like you ever gain power in the US. Or anywhere.

I agree. But in case you haven't been watching the news, that wouldn't even be necessary. Virtually every state and federal court in America has ruled in favor of almost everything I mentioned in my list, short of raising insurance premiums and denying hospital care for idiot fucking anti-vaxxers...but there's always 2022!

Private business vaccine mandates? Legal.

Vaccine mandates to board an airplane? Not yet, but there are bills introduced in the U.S. House (by Democrats) seeking to require proof of vaccination to board or deplane any flight at any airport on U.S. soil, to be taking up by Congress (run by Democrats) in the new year.

Vaccine requirements for restaurants, bars and gyms? Legal and in place in large cities across America and growing.

Vaccine requirements for students at state-funded institutions? Legal and instituted at public universities and colleges now, and coming soon to all public schools once the FDA issues full approval to minors (coming before Spring).

Vaccine requirements for all public sector employees, be it state, municipal or federal? Turn on the TV news and watch all the sobbing MAGA-tards wailing about being fired from their jobs this month and rambling on about constitutional rights and tyranny and overthrows.

The clock is ticking for you anti-vaxxers. As it is now, you can't eat in restaurants, can't go to gyms, can't go to bars, can't go to public universities, can't keep your shitty jobs, and pretty soon you'll just have to pile into your 1989 Dodge Caravan and roll to Sturgis or Daytona or Buttfuck-Wherever for your annual family outings (drunken brawls) since you'll be banned from airplanes, trains and every other form of public transportation.

But I will say this: You, sir, fit in perfectly in Osaka!!

I think it’s amusing that the next Lower House election in Japan is on Halloween. Politics can be scary, eh.

Actually, having elections on Sundays seems like a good idea to me. Perhaps America should adopt that practice?

If an American election on a Sunday would keep some of the crazy fundies away, then I would be all for it.

The powerful (Democratic) labor unions would never allow it. Not sure what elections are like in your neck of the woods, but most of the world has likely seen what a fucking zoo election day (week/month/year) can be in America. Even in the best-case scenario, Election Night will generally stretch into the overnight hours as officials wait for the fourth and fifth print-outs, and that requires a whole mess of state public employees to have to stay up all night, and these workers aren't getting paid overtime. Union officials would be furious. I've been at campaign HQ for major races where the race was called at third print-out around 11am, then changed again at 3am, then changed again at 5am. And on the national level, I'm sure everyone remembers the 2000 Bush/Gore election night in Flori-DUH.

The whole TUESDAY concept is too well drilled into the American political psyche. Plus, a lot of states are converting to all-mail ballot systems, so in a properly functioning state government the ballots should be properly and accurately counted and races called well before the evening is over. But then you open the nastiest can of worms--election corruption and ballot mishandling--and then all of a sudden a few thousand illiterate, shit-kicking, sister-humping morons are storming the Capitol because they believe what they read on Twitter.

Don’t change it! The entertainment value is huge.

In my boring country the prez is elected with a simple majority of votes and incredibly each vote has the same value whether you’re surrounded by cows and corn or living in a big city (weird concept, I know).

Usually results are announced at 8pm on the same day, the winner is happy, the loser is sad and that’s the end of it. Bland. Dull. Meh.

Except of course the occasional election-related rioting to keep it at some level of excitement. I’m afraid no one’s got it perfected. Humans are humans after all.

True but then again we pale vs America
Burning a few cars or shops is lame. Storming the Parliament or Elysee, that’s what we need to show to the world now. The bar is high.

I got this at a bar on ground level. Not bad but also not worth of any kind of storming in my opinion.

Many countries have fringe parties and fringe candidates. In Japan, I get a kick out of the fact that NHK G has to sometimes report on that small anti-NHK political party.

I don't care. I'm already vaccinated with little hesitation. What I'm not a fan of is medical strong arming to please a bunch of boogie neolibs and poor communication and lack of honesty on the part of our "betters" (hey take a booster because the government would rather be pharma salesmen instead of forcing these companies to make a longer lasting vaccine).

Sometimes as a tradcon I kinda wish old school commies take over. Anything would be better than this neolib hellscape and the tools who support it.

Wow bro, I didn't know you're from 2006.

so you really think that being in favor of vaccines mandates is a “neolib” and “commie” thing?

This is a point that will continue to divide. Each side on the ends of the spectrum want to demonize and paint convenient labels on the other. Does it surprise that some people don’t want the government mandating what must be done to one’s body and absolutely protest it. Reminds me of the stuff going on still in Texas unfortunately. I took the vaccines by my own choice but I don’t aim to shove my ideology or values down anyone else’s throat on this matter nor would support govts that want to do the same. The dialogue of some of the extreme vaxxers is downright fascist imo. Use more or better carrots not bigger sticks perhaps. There should be some better middle ground than either extreme.

Didn't say anything about it being commie. But yes it's a neolib thing.

George Washington. That freaky neolib..

(Excerpt from a WSJ article - obvious nest of neolibs too)

“George Washington immunized his troops against smallpox even against their will.

At the time, the process known as variolation consisted of scraping the pustule of an infected smallpox victim and transferring the contents to an uninfected person, who contracted a milder case of the disease. The mortality rate was about 3%.

In early 1777, Washington ordered his troops to be variolated secretly, to keep the British from learning that so many men were quarantined in sickbay. It proved a brilliant gamble: Smallpox largely disappeared from the ranks”

from the same article
WW2 GIs and 1950’s America. The heights of neo-lib thinking…

“During World War II, the U.S. military made vaccinations mandatory for a host of diseases, such as typhoid, yellow fever and tetanus. While some worked better than others, vaccination became an accepted part of life for GIs, who brought this attitude home. Soon successful vaccines were developed against childhood diseases like polio, measles, mumps and chickenpox. Guided by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Jacobson, all 50 states put laws on the books mandating vaccinations for school children. Medical and religious exemptions were added, though few used them at the time”

That's what a lot of the anti-vaxx crazies fail to realize (or admit). Mandatory vaccinations are nothing new and upheld as legal by the highest courts in the land. Anyone who has served in the military or attended public school has received mandatory vaccinations. And all this bullshit nonsense about "forced" vaccinations? Nobody is "forcing" any of them to do anything. Don't want to get vaccinated? That's your choice. Go be home-schooled. Go start your own anti-vax company to work at. Go open your own anti-vax bars and restaurants to eat at. Go build your own anti-vax gym to work out at. Go start your own anti-vax rockband and open your own anti-vax concert hall to play at. Go start your own anti-vax airline and rail company to travel with. And go start your own anti-vax country that will welcome foreign anti-vax tourists with open arms. Nobody's stopping you.

In a perfect world, science would gift us with a vaccine that's 100% effective at preventing infection from all variants of COVID, and this vaccine would be available to all in the world, and then COVID could morph into a wickedly dangerous variant and wipe out all the anti-vaxxers on the planet. The pinnacle of Darwinism. Think about it...most of the MAGA-hat crowd, holy roller religious zealots and just dumb people in general, all gone within the span of a year or two. Think about how much cleaner, safer, more polite and civilized the world would be. The only problem I can see is the global mean I.Q. would increase substantially, making competition much fiercer in academic and entrepreneurial environments.

But I'd be fine. I'd just go back into politics. You may be smart, civil, sophisticated and gifted, but that doesn't mean you're a gifted liar and bullshit artist. So long as politics exists, people like me will always be a necessary evil and fact of life.

yep . In my young days this conservative Frenchy’s conservative parents didn’t even think that it was an unbearable treason of our sacro-sanct freedom to get us kids vaccinated.

I still have my “carnet de vaccins” with all the dates and names of stuff those horrible neo-libs from the Pompidou and Giscard d’Estaing administrations forced me to get injected with.

At least if I was younger I could put the blame on Mitterrand , which was a socialist (kinda/ sort of) but sadly I don’t even have that lame excuse

First, being against mandates doesn't mean you're against vaccines. Second, mandates being a long standing policy doesn't make them right. Third, if the trade off is grinding your life and access to society to a halt, then yes you are being forced. Even if you think this act of force is for the greater good. Lastly, your obsession with the MAGA is a bit annoying. Like you and Frenchy are going to be saviors of conservatism from the dreaded populists. Hate to break it to you two, populism is the future and you guys are the crusty old neocons of yesteryear. I would say you have a new home on the left but populists are having a moment there too. Maybe you can make a centrist movement nobody really wants.
