Do Companies Often Fire People Over Dinner?

I was let go from another teaching job here in Japan years ago during my first time living in Japan. No, it wasn't the same situation at all (which I will not bring up on this forum again).

I only ask because my boss never really invites me out to dinner and suddenly she asked me last night? I believe she plans to let me go over dinner and a talk.

Has anyone been suddenly invited to "dinner" and then got let go by any companies here in Japan?

Nope, usually you're brought into your manager's office and the axe falls.

Simple question- do you always leave personal items in your office at work? If so, you are not getting fired over dinner.

If you routinely clean out your belongings before leaving for the night, and you are a shitty employee, and your boss is scared of how you might react, and you are invited for dinner in a public place out of the blue by your female boss?

Sounds like it.

Well, what do you think the dinner date most likely means? We aren't interested in each other romantically and she knows I'm married. It wasn't until after this recent incident that she suddenly invited me out. Maybe she doesn't want to conduct a raid at her school, so decided to set one up at a random restaurant?

Wouldn't they just come to my home address if it were that serious?

I can't recall anyone actually getting fired by my company, not in the last 10 years. But, if it were to happen, it wouldn't be over dinner.

People that wind up leaving usually do so on their own accord, which may or may not have been the result of being assigned to non-meaningful tasks.

How about just being professional and asking her why she's asking for dinner? Is there some business to go over? or another matter? Just ask....

I'm going to hazard a guess that it means she doesn't feel like eating at home tonight, and her friends are busy.

But @TAG Manager is right, if you're unsure, jsut ask what you'll be discussing so you can prepare.

I emailed her asking about 3 hours ago, no reply. I know she is busy, but I'm sure that she wants to discuss the situation in person.

It would be a miracle if it weren't related to my recent incident...but I can bet all my money that is what it is about.

I just hope I lose my job and not all my money, my visa, my freedom, etc.

We are talking small English school here, right? Not a corporate environment.

This is exactly how a small English school would do it. Especially if the boss is female, and there were no other male staff around to run interference if things got nasty.

I wouldn't assume the worst, but mentally bracing for something nasty would be wise.

It is a small English school, there is little staff and my boss is a woman.

I'm trying not to assume the worst...but if I were in serious trouble...wouldn't the police have come to my home days ago? The incident occurred almost a week ago.
There is a chance my boss just wants to hear my side of the story though.

In one TokyoBlowJoe's other threads, he talks about clashing with an owner of a rival school. It is a slight possibility but she might have contacted his current boss.

I would suggest that TokyoJoeBoss has his side of the story airtight just on the off chance.

Ironically, I just got my new visa card today. I assume that if I were in real serious trouble, they would not have given it to me? Unless the local police know of the situation and immigration doesn't know yet? I'm not sure how things work here, but I'm trying not to focus on this terrible off chance, while I still prepare for it...

Doesn't dinner seem pretty classy if I were facing charges? Unless it is some sting operation, I would think no dinner.

Your card would have been printed 1-2 weeks ago and put in the shipping queue. Unrelated.

@User#8628 Do you like my posts or do you "like" my posts? It sometimes comes off as this hidden passive-aggressive thing...then again I could be wrong and we are cool lol.

So what you are saying is that I would still have received my new card, but another copy of it would be put into a "people in trouble" file collection?

I was able to obtain my new visa card really quick, a little under 2 weeks...but that might literally mean nothing.

Just interesting...

So not only the Japanese are passive aggressive?

Not only the Japanese. I just have noticed passive aggressive behavior is a lot more common here than more countries. I know a lot of foreigners kind of adapt and start to act passive aggressive as well due to living in Japan long-term. I'm not saying that is what you are doing though haha.

There's no "people in trouble" file collection. If they're suspicicious, they either investigate you or put out a deportation order. Subtle, they ain't.

So in your opinion, if I were in a lot of trouble, would they have already arrested me soon after or could they wait until after my boss talks to me about what happened first? I would assume the police would just want to know what happened from me directly soon after if they really wanted right?

Yes, I have also heard they are not subtle...

When is the dinner? I need to know how long I am going to have to wait for the next episode in this fascinating soap opera.

Hope it is nothing serious.

It is supposed to be Saturday night, but I emailed her today and she knows that I know that she might let me go. I'm supposed to work tonight...but I assume I will just be talking with her about what happened and be let go...and then there is the possibility of having my entire life turned upside down...

If the police want to talk to you, they will come and get you. Again, subtlety is not the bailiwick of the law enforcement community.

Yes, my logic tells me this as well. Getting fired over dinner is the opposite of a police raid. I don't think police raid restaurants lol. I do know that they show up at homes though.

Holy shit...she just emailed me saying that she isn't planning to fire me and that I'm not in any trouble? I was so sure I was screwed to next Sunday...I guess maybe she wants to get drunk and enjoy a dinner with me. Her email was quite flirtatious...my life is insane. I will have to find out more about this tonight when I go into work.

To be continued...
