As everyone knows a good point about living in Japan is the relatively low level of crime. Although the most common kinds of crime appear to be.

1. Stealing bicycles.
2. Stealing panties. I believe many Japanese ladies 'go commando' after having all their panties stolen.
3. Groping ladies on the train.
4. Murdering family members. There is at least one new case in the media every day. :()

Anyone been the victim of crime in Japan? I haven't had any problems myself.

1F apartments are routinely cheaper than higher level ones partially because of the underwear stealing thing. A few of the JP women I've dated told me their stuff has been stolen while up to dry on their balcony. Bizarre.

Wow, I thought the gropers were more comfortable targeting Japanese.

Anyway, in my dormitory there was a kleptomaniac who would steal anything, such as crappy jeans.

Japan stole my youth. I'd like it back.

Really? Just the opposite happened to me! Well, at least in my fantasies.

Yet, in some ways in reality, at least in my enhanced ones, hehe.

OK, back to topic, in my almost seventeen years in Japan, not a single encounter with crime, at least personally. In my old Zushi neighborhood, a neighbor next to me and the one in back had their homes burglarized.

The police also blamed Chinese gangs. That was fourteen years ago. They are getting old now. Must be the same gang:

Motorcycle theft is quite common here - the stolen bikes are shipped to Russia or Thailand usually. I personally know a half dozen people who've had their motorcycles stolen - one from in front of his house as he went back in side to grab a forgotten pair of gloves. One poor guy got hit twice, they got his bike, and then they came back and got the replacement a month later!

Housebreaking is relatively common, and though it does sound racist of the police to say so, it often is the work of Chinese gangs. They come to Japan specifically to housebreak because the penalties if they get caught here are far lighter than in China, while the potential spoils are much higher. They prefer to target higher floor units away from elevators or standalone houses.

I had incident of groping in the train. The guy was trying to subtly touch me on the boobs and ass from the side. What I did was face him, looked him in the eye and pop out my heavily padded and pushed up boobies and almost told him to "come on baby touch me" through body language. I thought the that if he actually would touch me, oh well, it's just pads anyway.

If only I can take a photo of his horried face haha, he silently freaked out. He didn't see that coming. Haha Needless to say, he got out of train on the next stop out of shame.

Predetors siphon power from fear. When they aren't feared, they aren't powerful. Wrong prey baby, wrong prey.

Oh I wish I have another groping accident but that never happened again.

He might heave had a meltdown and start crying, and then you will be in trouble! :p

Crying coz he was intimidated? Or coz he didn't anticipate what I did?

Haha when there'a a cute young girl and and old salaryman in groping incident, who do you think the police will take side to?

Also, I could have shouted chikan! And that would have gotten his entire life in trouble but I didn't, What I did was even nice of me right? Plus I am not that dramatic [emoji6]

I think it would make public news! "Horror on a commute express! A young woman assaulted a law-abiding citizen on a train during rash hours."

Jokes aside... it's a serious problem in Japan ...

The whole Chikan problem will hopefully blow up in the government's face during the 2020 Olympics when all the foreign female tourists get molested by drunken, sweaty and natto-reeking sararimen.

They almost don't target foreigners though.
I don't take the train regulary but i never experienced unconsentual touching in the train.
The wilder and more assertive you look the less chance to be touched.

There is another kind of horror for heterosexual guys... When riding a crowded train, some random salaryman has his junk mashed against your thigh.

Even scarier for said heterosexual guy- when the junk...twitches...

For a heterosexual guy who's confident in his own sexuality, that's mildly amusing. at best. Now, for those who aren't quite so sure of themselves.... ;)

Want to hear something silly?

To date, I've never had any serious problems in Japan. The places I've chosen to live are usually extremely low on the crime stats. (so knock on wood, that my good luck continues!)

For a time, I would take my bicycle to the train station and use the 100-yen all-day bike parking. During the times that I was doing this, I had my bicycle light stolen, twice. Even more common, the thieves would come along and take the batteries but leave the light. So, I got one of those detachable models and just toss it in my work bag and take it with me. (the time span is over the past 10 years)

@Sudsy -- That bothers me about the motorcycle theft. I've heard stories, but I've been lucky so far with no issues. Parking in Shinjuku on the street level lots, scare me. But, parking in the undergrounds spaces seems more secure. What part of Tokyo was that where the two bikes were stolen back-to-back? I'm seriously thinking about getting an older, used bike when I ride to work (steal that one, I don't care... lol). That kinda kills my idea of getting the 2nd bike I wanted..... :(
