if you lose your job, is there a time limit within which you have to get a new job before your visa is revoked?

@danthrope apparenlty your work visa has an expiry period which is the validity period of your visa (usualy is a total of 3-5 yrs). During that time you can also apply for unemployment benefits which is enough to survive assuming u meet their criteria and you habe ample expiry tome left on the visa....

you can keep your visa as long as it is valid, even if someone finds out, you should be able to keep it as long as you are looking for work and so on...
the 3 month "rule" was/is not something that was/is enforced usually, as far as i know that was more to stop people coming on entertainment visa and then changing into hostessing and things like that... which doesnt make much sense, since people in such jobs do it private and are usually here on wh, or student visa, anyway...
i wouldnt worry, just get a new job as fast as you can...

since when do foreigners get unemployment benefits?

That would be news to me. The rule varies between each locality and it's completely up to whomever is making the decision at the time. You can certainly apply, but you're not likely going to get any even if you've been paying taxes. (There was a decent article about this when one of the courts made a ruling about those welfare benefits being available to only 'native' Japanese people.)

yeah i thought so, too... we just pay and thats it... though i know that there is an arrangement between japan and my country, which says that whatever i payed in for unemployment benefits and pension would be payable in both countries... i somehow doubt it its fulfillment,though...

Isn't 雇用保険compulsory? I pay it for all my staff regardless of nationality?
If you're fired/laid off, then you get it right away. If you quit then you wait 3 months before it kicks in.

Ah, yes, I believe that is standard... sorry, I think I crossed the wires. I was referring to welfare benefits not the unemployment due to quitting or being laid off.

And this is the article I remember reading back then:

yeah you have to pay it,but i never heard that foreigners get it back (you probably know better than me, though)... i also didnt get anything when i was fired/laid off, but might be that nobody gave notice to no one and thats the reason... and im not going to give notice to anyone, just to find out...
its also possible that you have to meet a special criteria that most foreigners are not able to meet...

Holy fuck!
Not getting into P4P establishments is one thing...
Arguably, they want to tax and have foreigners pay into their system, and avoid having foreigners take money out of the system, despite how long they have lived or worked here. The older Japanese generation needs the tax money for support.

Well, foreigners and Japanese are on the same line here and yes, I have heard foreigners to receive unemployment benefits even in the cases they have left the job voluntarily. Just don't expect to be living too well with it, I believe the sum is around 130k per month.

The reason why most foreigners don't get unemployment benefits is that their company has not paid to the system to begin with. Many foreign companies skip this payment for their foreign employees and even Japanese companies are now doing the same. Of course they are obligated to pay it but in reality there are very few checks and even if they get caught there are no penalties. Just back-pay. Also because the health insurance, unemployment and pension systems are all separate it is possible to pay to one system and not pay to other.

Another reason for not getting benefits is there is also a legal way for companies to use to avoid paying to the system: hire people to work only less than 20 hours per week.

During my first time in Japan, I quit the company and applied for unemployment insurance. I can't remember how much, but it was around 180,000/month (or maybe even 200,000) for 3 months.

The company paid for the unemployment insurance tax so anybody is qualified to take it.

If you paid into the unemployment insurance and also worker accident insurance, once you are out of job , fired or contract end not renew, you need to visit nearest Hello Work to apply for it and claim your benefit immediately.
If you quit on your own accord, you need to wait at least 3 month before apply/claim the benefit.
Payment varies depend on your salary, maybe..
