Has anyone ate raw horse meat (basashi馬刺し)?

if u did plz tell me about your experience.

co-worker wanted me to try it but.............well i couldnt

I have not eaten horse but I eat whale. In fact I took a picture of the menu and the food when it arrived and myself eating whale then posted it to my facebook, mainly to troll my PETA and animal rights friends because they had been pissing me off at the time. I find the taste rather bloody with little to no flavor, would not recommend honestly.

Had it when I was in Kumamoto (local specialty there I believe), not too bad, tastes richer and more lean than beef sashimi. Had horse meat steaks as well.

I'd recommend it if the restaurant / chef knows what he's doing and orepares it properly.

I had it, doesn't taste bad, but even friends from Kyushuu admit that food poisoning occasionally happens.
As @nedar said, if you trust the chef... I decided that eating it once was enough for me and I did it in Kumamoto as well.

Have tried it in Tokyo area and Kumamoto. As noted it is a specialty of Kyushu and it did taste good. Worth a try in my opinion.

I've had both horse and deer sushi. I liked both - trust me though based on our feelings towards horses it's definitely not on the regular menu.

If nothing else try new things.

That reminds me that I still haven't visited the restaurant in Tokyo where they serve dolphin.... ;)

After all PETA stands for People Eating Tasty Animals.

Though anyone who has spend any serious time drinking his dinners with the local salarymen has most probably eaten both whale and horse; knowingly or not.

Nagano is famous for it, too. I had it without knowledge (it was included in a set menu of many plates) and thought it a bit stiff/elastic red tuna...

I used to buy cheap basashi at my local supermarket in Saitama. I loved it, but I'm sure it wasn't the best quality.

I had it once. I was not impressed, but I wouldn't be surprised if what I had wasn't the best quality. I probably wouldn't do it again though. As an aside, I lived in Korea for a couple of years but never got around to trying dog, so that's still on my bucket list.

Had whale the first time as part of a sashimi set plate, not expected to be served it, unexpectedly tasty.

Have ordered it a few times subsequently, but purely for 'research' purposes.

There is a decent-sized 馬刺し restaurant down the street from my apartment that I ate at a couple times. The first time, I was only able to eat it because I was drunk and the second time I requested that they cook the meat, which they did for me. I thought they would be pissed, but the couple that owns the place are really friendly. The mean tastes really good cooked lol.

I just ate raw horse meat this afternoon. It was very lean and didn't have any horse smell at all. If I didn't know it was horse meat, I would have guessed it was beef.

It also really depends on which cut you eat. I ate marbled slices of horse sashimi before and it tasted very different from beef.

But the real challenge is in your head. I felt really uncomfortable eating it even though the meat was fine.

Its very nice and velvety. Not at all gamey. I dont recommend the basashi they serve in tokyo though its not anywhere as good in quality as what they serve in Kumamoto

Mankind has discovered the fire ages ago. Why somebody would choose to go even further back in time to dine like the anthropoids did is beyond me, but fortunately I don't have to join them.

I ate horse minced meat bbq and I didn't like the smell so I don't think I'll try it raw

you can get boar meat (猪 [いのしし]) from some Okinawan restos. it's how I prefer to get them, then add some はぶ酒.

If anyone ever visits Yamanashi prefecture, I highly recommend trying ほうとう. This is a regional dish that includes udon noodles and vegetables in a miso soup, but some places add meat such as いのしし.

the resturant i went 炉とマタギhadハブ酒 had it on the rock

and スズメバチ酒 (alcohol made with really big wasp) it was make your own style with honey syrup and sparkling water

both of them were great.

I guess its much easier to drink alcohol with bugs in it than trying raw horse meat

i guess im used to alcohol and bug thru drinking tequila with agave worm

I've tried houtou several times already but not the one that had inoshishi. Even went up the mountains to attend a "class" where we rolled the dough and cut our own noodles. Cooked it afterwards at the same shop.

OMG! People talking about food here! This is my kinda thread!
I love eating raw stuff - basashi is no exception.
Most yakitori and Izakaya spots serve basashi or Sakura yukke but its normally just akami and frozen

So far my best experience with basashi is in a kyuushuu food izakaya near Meguro station and an umayaki (horse yakiniku) specialist restaurant in ginza

The sauce that goes with it is so sweet! It's like eating raw beef with Indonesian kicap! Yummmmyyyyyy

Some client I met at the tea house forced me to eat Basashi once... I did it only to make him satisfied.
I put a lot of garlic on it so didn't taste the meat itself at all.

Basically I don't like any type of minor meat e.g. cow's toungue 牛タン organs ホルモン organ hot pot もつ煮 pigeon, rabbit, deer, bear, wild boar and so on. It is not the taste but image.

Had some last year at an izakaya. It wasn't bad but wasn't really a huge fan of the texture or taste. Perhaps a touch "gamey"? Hard to explain but I definitely could tell it wasn't beef.
