ads for everyone now?

Just recently I'm seeing banner ads at the bottom of every page and escort ads at the top of every page. Is this a recent change for everyone?

Nope. If you are a regular posting member, ads are more limited. If your activity dropped, then ads are shown to you. Once you reach a certain level of posting frequency, the ads are reduced.
