Yes, it's true that there are some good alternatives in SE Asia to BKK.

One of the hobby destinations that I like is Angeles City in the Philippines. Angeles City tends to be cheaper than Pattaya let alone Bangkok.

It is a shame that there aren't any direct flights from Japan to Clark (the airport in Angeles City). I'm not sure why. There are flights to Clark from South Korea and several other Asian countries, but not Japan. At the moment, one still has to arrive in NAIA (Metro Manila), which is a mess.
