BPage in USA. Gone

Kamala Harris more or less made her career as the SF district attorney and California Attorney General by going after Backpage and other adult pages. She's now a newly minted US Senator taking over Barbara Boxer's seat. While I tend to be pretty leftist in my political thinking (shock! surprise!) I think being reactionary about prostitution is neither a leftist notion or good public policy. I wouldn't be surprised at all if she uses her new position to continue going after these types of sites.

She probably got a bad review one time.....

All this does is create the demand for another site like Backpage for sex work. The politicians will claim a victory and pat themselves on the back but sex work isn't going anywhere. All this does is put sex workers and consumers in danger of scams/rip offs/violence. It's a damn shame nobody has made a site overseas to address this demand for a verifiable marketplace for sex work.

Well, the scary thing is that it will either drive the hobby further into the shadows, endangering both providers and hobbyists, or you'll get a site overseas that isn't responsive to requests from law enforcement for information regarding trafficking and other issues. The primary reason for decriminalization is to make it simple to tackle related legal or health issues that only get worse when you stomp on legit sites like Craigslist or Backpage.

She's an American: sex is dirty and bombing brown people (note the hypocrisy) into oblivion is God's work. I guarantee when Herr Drumph declares WW3 she'll fall right into line voting for it. (n)(n)(n)

Leftists are not liberal... leftists are very authoritarian, what you probably are is a libertarian.

Leftists are far worse than the right about getting into your personal lives.

(I apologize in advance for the dickishness of the following response.)

Thank you for defining my political belief system for me. It's very comforting to know that you know exactly where I'm coming from and know just what label I should use.

(end dickishness)

Leftist... Rightist... It don't matter and Backpage back then was fun when I had the time to daddle with it (good ol' days of craigslist as well) but now I rely on other reliable (often verifiable) sites that provides me with what I need.

I agree with @meiji but I hope it doesn't get to that point. The US is slowly veering away from its conservative views regardless of the current cabinet/house/senate/cupboard. Its better to regulate something rather than outlawing it.

Conservatism is shifting towards Libertarianism happily, which is all about legalization of prostitution and letting states moderate it. $$

Yeah, ok, you made your point. I guess I sounded like an ass with that post.

But dude, I really think your are using the labels of political categories in a blurred way.

Anyway, sorry to offend.

Politics aside, the whole movement to close up BP ads will be bad for all. At least for those using the U.S. version.
I'm watching some of the adult webmaster discussion sites about what's coming next but most are not wanting to tangle with the U.S. government.

Pretty sure eventually they'll just move it to another country.

Makes me wonder, why do they go after Craigslist and Backpage, pages that just have sections, when they could go after places like Cityvibe, that specifically cater to escorts?

IMO

CL and BP should have been or should be regulated better. It has turned into a circus and scamm filled site. Sure and occasional Troll wont hurt but if you are at least in the news once a month for some sex or child trafficking then people would notice.

A good example of regulating things would be a site called Rubmaps. I remember then giving access to accurate information regarding AMPs based on participation but they now require people to register. Did LE get involved? Maybe, but they kept their noses clean and continue to provide almost accurate info to Mongerers.

They actually have gone after a number of other sites that had ads, including MyRedbook from the SF Bay Area. Cityvibe used to have a built-in review website called Adultfax and one day it was completely stripped from their site with no warning or explanation. My guess is they had legal guidance that accepting money for ads AND posting reviews falls under the new definition of promotion of prostitution.

Rubmaps is just barely useful, IMO. Yes, it's not the hive of scum and villainy that CL or BP were, but theres quite a bit of inaccurate info in there, either by people shilling for a provider or someone trying to tear them down.

Used as an example of course. I was using their services a lot 5 years ago but then that was another life. Thats why I'm stickin to TAG while I'm still employed in Japan.

It won't get shut down, it'll just turn into a festering garbage heap ala craigslist personals... Which used to not suck, back when CL had adult ads.
They sure do know how to ruin things because of lack of forethought. All they had to do was make BP regulate the section everywhere rather than totally banning it.

Is this going to be worldwide or just in the States?

It's a U.S. problem.
The U.S. may have control over the financial system, but not something like this.

At least... I hope other localities don't cave to the U.S. like they have in the past...

I was expecting this to happen after the news about the warrants for the BP founders. I think the thing I was shocked the most was how long BP actually lasted for this thing in the US after CL. I never got to use CL while it was all the rage, but used BP a few times. I'm sure there are some people here on TAG that hit lots of gold on CL back in the day. Maybe can share some fun stores in the International Section? :p
