So, do someone still believe Japan would open border for tourist right in next year?

I hope and guess would be open again right before X'mas holiday of next year, do someone agree?

The best thing to do from the bureaucrat's perspective is to make every foreign visitor leave a ¥500,000 medical deposit upon entry that is refunded upon departure. That deposit can be used for medical care in Japan during your stay if you catch COVID. It will not cover everything but at least they would get something out of a foreigner if they require medical care. It would shutout a lot of people but it would also provide much needed injection of cash for the tourist industry.

I think Miley has a point - when they do open up for tourist, tourists are probably going to need to provide a proof of medical coverage.

Now we just need to design a test to identify these types.

It could be something similar than what one Japanese girl I know is using when dating a new foreign guy.

She told she will ask them "What is your favourite manga or anime?". And if the guy has an answer then it's a no-go.

She definitely has a type lol and it ain't normal. Why ask a foreigner about the one thing that your country is most known for, and cross them off if they do know something about it ? 10 out of 10 guys, if presented with such question, would just assume it's genuine and try to give an answer, even something as cliche as "Uhh...I don't know, Naruto ?"

It's like...I don't know, an American guy asking a Japanese girl what her favorite brand of freedom is, and cross her off if the answer is not "Made in USA"

I dont know any anime characters, and i dont think japan is ‘most known’ for it at all.

Most guys Ive met that could actually answer that anime question are pretty socially inept, so i think its a decent ‘screening’ question from the lady.

If a girl asked me what kind of anime I liked, she’d be on the short list for a dine and dash!

We're definitely from different generations, so I get where you're coming from, but dismissing manga/anime as a popular cultural sensation coming out of Japan is pretty tone-deaf, imo. Off the top of my head, the 5 things I think of when "Japan" is mentioned are, in no particular order: sushi, samurai, ninja, Mt. Fuji, and manga/anime (switch ninja for soapland if I'm being honest lol but let's keep it PG13). There's a very slim chance you will get a response outside of those 5 if you ask a random Westerner on the street what pops up in their mind when they think of Japan. I mean...don't get me wrong, but I don't give personal anecdote any weight in a discussion. I could just as well say a large number of guys I've met that could actually name just a single manga/anime character are normal dudes with acceptable social skills. We're not even talking about "knowing every characters of the currently trending top 10 animes", but one single character

If the girl has a certain type she's looking for then it's up to her, but I still don't see why questioning people like that only to dismiss them is a "decent" thing.

Because she's trying to weed out man-children who still watch cartoons?

Hate to tell you, but the average Japanese adult has little to no interest in anime or manga. The average foreign import might skew a little higher, but loads of us ended up here through an interest in martial arts or motorsports. Among my social circle I don't think I can name a single person that actively watches anime or reads manga.

Porn now... that's a different story.

When people ask me what my favorite anime is I say The Simpsons. Japanese people respond with "cool!", non-Japanese respond with an hour long raging lecture on why The Simpsons isn't anime.

I’m curious, how old is she? I’m a dork, so I like some anime (among other less dorky things), but if I’m interacting with a new chick that’s my age or older, I definitely keep that anime shit to myself. Lol. At least at the start. Same goes for any video game talk too (although with video games if they don’t think you’re socially inept, there’s still a lazy ass stigma). Unless I actually want them to think I’m a dork. :pompous: Younger chicks, it’s iffy, but I still tread carefully. And even if I think it’s safe to touch on anime, I keep it to some extremely popular or more well known one like Dragonball or One Piece (depending on generation) that they could’ve watched while growing up.

The girls I know that can talk anime tend to be socially awkward too. And if not, they only know of the one or two anime their older brother was into. Or worse, they can talk about an anime, ie: Naruto or Boruto, because their young kid is into it.

Sorry guys but anime & manga is a millennial & gen z thing. Not a Gen x or Boomer thing, for the most part. All of my friends enjoy them to a level, regardless of having an urge to visit Japan. Me (millennial) & my brother (Gen Z) like some anime too. And he has like five girls orbiting him at a given time. I’d like to think we are not socially awkward. Unless you’re sleeping with a Waifu every day watching anime is not a sign of being socially inept, at least for our generation.
Besides we both learned a good amount of English and Japanese from the subtitles. It can be a great tool for language acquisition.

Yeah, you'd be surprised, sadly... :muted:

I barely knew what Anime was before I wound up in Japan and never got into it after arriving. I can only tolerate small amounts to appease my partner who is into just a couple of mangas & anime.

At least you put in the effort to please your partner and are not stubborn about trying something new.

Seriously all this talk about “If you watch anime you’re a man-child” just makes me relive my trauma from middle school with stupid boomer teachers who had limited perception: “Anime bad, your grades will drop if you watch two minutes of it but micromanaging every aspect of a child’s routine and behavior good?”

It’s 2021, nerds are on the rise. Lots of guys in their thirties who earn six or seven figures love anime, board games or gaming. The boomer mindset on the other hand is finally is dying. Anime is a form of art with many sub genres and I don’t see any reason to reject it all completely.

I’d expect people on a p4p board to be more open minded than the general public but I guess people tend to be open minded as long as it serves their interests.

If people get enjoyment out of watching anime, that's great, but there are also many people that have toxic relationships with it. I've also been traumatized I guess, lol. I'm currently not in Japan, I feel like I have to hide the fact that I speak Japanese because on several occasions people have started shouting "やれやれだぜ", "お前はもうしんでる" or the one that bothers me the most screaming "NANI!?!" at me, often followed up with asking me if I watch hentai. For a lot of these people, Japan is basically a meme.

Nothing wrong with anime. But guys (of any age) that ive met that are ‘into’ anime are all a bit socially awkward - to the extent they do stuff like pay for sex.

hmmm.. I can understand the argument for boomers but GenX was the first one into animes. I can still remember fondly the Goldorak , Albator and Candy Candy series on French TV , Wednesday afternoons, in the late 70s and 80s. It was a quasi-ritual. Old animes for sure, but animes nevertheless

Uhhh...I mean, having a favorite manga/anime doesn't automatically qualify anyone as a man-child who still watches cartoons though ? Could just be something from way back, if someone were born in the 90's they could easily say Dragon Ball. My point is, you can't ask such a genuine question that people take at face value, then use the response to dismiss them as some sort of degenerated dum dum, then turn around and justify it as a "decent" thing.

You guys keep steering the argument away from the point that it's a shitty way to use a simple ice-breaker question to screen people. I'm not about to go deep into arguing about the level of interest that Japanese people or foreigners have for whatever stuff they're into.

That is obviously just the types of heads she is trying to avoid.

I know you like to verbally dunk on people so I'm gonna take that one :ROFLMAO:
