Favorite books or current reads?

My favorites authors here in Japan from the classic to the modern; Natsume Sōseki, Kenzaburō Ōe, Haruki Murakami, Yoko Tawada Banana Yoshimoto, Amy Yamada and Ryu Murakami. And the best love story I read ever was written by the controversial extremist Yukio Mishima (he committed seppuku): The sound of waves. I have read it again in this COVID outbreak. It’s a must.

One of my favourite books - Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. Note that it is a fictionalised telling of Miyamoto Musashi’s life & inspiration for the Vagabond manga, though more than a few feel like it’s more than historical fiction.

Current read - What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami. For those inspired to run or already inspired runners.

Honestly, for all that he is obviously one of the greatest non living irishmen, Dubliners is the only thing of his worth reading.

Oh, mind you. If you haven't already, you should read Normal People. I was completely blown away by it. I think it is an absolute masterpiece. Like Dubliners it absolutely embodies every facet of humanity.

But everyone I know hates it.

Well, I have just looked up Dubliners and I don't see myself ever reading that.

But to be fair, since a few years all I read are evergreens like the capital requirements regulation or the bank recovery and resolution directive in ever new iterations. Leaves me with little appetite for anything else to read.

I used to read a lot, when I was younger thought, so there is still hope;)

Oh man, seriously, Dubliners is insanely good. Please read it!

My all time favourite book must be "More money than god" by Sebastian Mallaby.

And I say must not because it was that good but because I was reading it on a flight to Singapore and the book made one of the flight attendants interested enough to go on date with me that same night.

Easily the best and the worst six months of my life followed.

That’s finance Hardcore porn . Be careful, it’s highly addictive. Try something more gentle from time to time , like the 1992 ISDA Master Agreement followed by the 2002 version and take notes of all the subtle differences. I know, I’m a romantic...

Sounds like you were living every men’s dream back then! (and perhaps you still do)

Ah, those were the days. Real competitors, not pussys like LeBron or KD;)

I might be in the minority, but I like the modern NBA as much as "back in the day." The overall skill level is much higher than in the 90s and it's much more diverse. The two stars of the future are a 7-foot Greek marvel and a 21-year-old Slovenian prodigy. I do agree that the players can be too chummy with each other sometimes.

My favorite book is "Catch-22" (Joseph Heller). I like Milo, not Yossarian, but I honestly want to be Major Major Major Major.

Currently reading "On earth we're briefly gorgeous" (Ocean Vuong).

Expecting: TJB's first novel

OMG, was it a Singapore Airlines flight attendant? That's a 100% pure male fantasy come true right there. Kudos!

Yeah, and it was even a time they didn't have any male flight attendants. :p

It's worrisome that we seem to have more in common than I feared in my worst nightmares:D

Oh thats nothing. I have visited the same 10 vaginas with one other member here (so far it’s the record... that I know of at least) . This is where your worst nightmares should start :)

And you always make it sound, like no one could be interested in your wife!;)

Guys, if you haven't read Remains of the Day you are dead to me.
Have you read never let me go by the same author? I feel like the theme (wtf are we all doing here and isnt it depressing how most of us are just totally wasting the short time we have) is the same.

So back in the days when I was still reading a lot, I liked fantasy books. Obviously I read everything by Tolkien including the Silmarillion a few times. I have to shamefully admit that I was also quite fond of "A Song of Ice and Fire", before that got corrupted and turned into Game of Porn.

One of my absolute favorites however is the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. Takes a bit to unwind, but great characters.

I’m re-reading A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick

it’s not my favorite. Just happens to be what I’m reading out of nostalgia.

A few years ago, I read the most I will probably ever read on a Kindle reader ( on my smartphone). I was in rehab ( physical injury not mental or addiction-related) and it passed the time as I was in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber. For serious reading, prefer printed matter on paper versus an LCD screen.

I thought smartphones weren't allowed in the chamber because of fire risk? I guess the tech's come a long way.
