Hello!
Just made an account. I'm planning on applying for a working visa to Japan in the near future. I'm 22, Female with a degree in multimedia arts and have worked in the gaming industry for a while. Currently studying up Japanese. I'm actually looking to work for the porn industry (NOT AS AN ACTRESS LOL) as an assistant or tech person, or even just a layout artist for print and basically any other media. Does anyone have ANY idea on how I can start? Frankly, the pay isn't what I'm after. I'm just really passionate about this and 100% serious. Do you guys think I have a chance at this?

Anything is possible, but I'm willing to bet that you'd need to get in the door through a more standard approach. Anything is possible... reaching out to a studio or production firm is probably the best first step. If you can't find what you're looking for, start in a more standard media field and transition over.

Wow, thanks a bunch! I'm starting to hope that I might actually make it there. Though, it's a shame that I majored in graphics since a film major might give me better chances. I also think it might be harder to get into broadcast companies but my portfolio might mean at least something to them (?) I mean unlike the adult industry where it gives them absolutely nothing lol. Do you think I should get a degree in film first? I'd prefer not to but if there isn't really any choice, I just might get a course on film or something. But really, I'd be willing to even wipe the c*m on the actresses without pay or run errands for the production staff at first lmao really ANYTHING remotely related but will get me inside, I'm willing to do. But I'm afraid they'd see me as desperate or something lmao but that's because I am!!

I have no idea - I don't work in the AV industry professionally, so I don't have an inside view. Your biggest hurdle would be gaining the correct permission to work here if you don't already have it. A proper visa + Japanese ability + marketable skills = success. If the production companies won't talk to you, then best to start with anything that would get you into Japan first and then begin to branch out.

Yes. Thank you for the advice. I'll keep that in mind! :)

Chris, the (Tag Manager) said "A proper visa + Japanese ability + marketable skills = success"..... I would advise strongly putting emphasis on your Japanese language skills, speaking, reading and writing. If you develop a good command of Japanese, and if you can afford it, you could enroll in a Japanese language school here, with a visa that allows you to work part time..... That would give you the chance to explore Japan a bit..... Until the COvid-19 situation calms down, I think you have time to prepare yourself.... Good luck!

I would bet it’s hard for an AV company except DMM to give work visas.
This is my first time hearing about DMM, thanks for the info! :D Tbh, I don't mind starting somewhere else if it gets me where I want hehe. I'll be working on my visa as soon as I can, too. I have my eyes set on this certain company, and I saw that they're hiring even inexperienced people. It gave me a lot of hope, but I really do need to work on my Japanese fluency!! TT

Thank you for the encouragement! :D It really means a lot to me. I really want to fly to tokyo as soon as I can! :( And yes, I'm currently working on my Japanese. Will be enrolling in some classes too, once the quarantine is lifted hehe but I'll do research on that visa you were referring to. :)

Most Japanese schools here do online classes now, which is probably way better than what you will do back in wherever you coming from. Just choose a school with small class sizes, not one of those aimed at Asian students.

However I'm not sure what your motivation is to target this specific industry and role and specifically in Japan. It's neither easy to enter nor will you probably ever bring a big paycheck home. I imagine it's also not especially helpful if you want to transfer to a different career later.

Thank you for the tip and for the honesty as well!! I really appreciate it! :D

I'm still doing research on which visa would suit me best since I'm not really all that familiar with the types and requirements yet. I wasn't even aware that you could get a student visa for studying Japanese (not sure if i understood correctly) but if that's the case I might give that a shot first.

Hmm as for earning money, I don't really have a problem with getting a small paycheck as I can always do online freelance work with my actual craft hehe :D plus I can also arrange a living situation with someone I'm close with who already lives there. As for my intentions, hmm I'm just really passionate about it! :D I honestly think that if I strive, I might just be able to fit in with that kind of business, given the opportunity of course. I think I can be fluid with what kind of job I may get (hopefully) since I've been exposed to diff kinds of media/advertising companies in the past and I'm also comfortable with errand work. And as for the possibility of switching careers, hmm well actually I really don't want any other career :( The only thing I'm good at is arts but I'm not 100% passionate about it. I just want to be in the AV industry because I love every aspect of it :) Plus the studio that I have my eye on is currently looking for personnel and they're willing to take in someone who's inexperienced. :D I know I'm not ready as I am right now but I'm willing to put in the effort to be qualified for a job in AV. (I hope) :)

As someone who has been working inside of studios (not AV, but as a creative;)) and multiple years as freelancer I have to say that this sounds a bit naiv. I think you have to consider two things:

Working for a regular company in the west takes up 8-10 hours each day and is very draining, if you are working in Japan, especially when you just break into the industry you will probably have to put in more hours than that. Getting freelance work done besides that can be problematic, interfering with deadlines and really burn you out.

Ontop of that some companies don't allow freelance work on the side. I have no idea how most companies handle that in Japan, but you should keep that in mind if you get an offer and are reading their contracts. Could be a huge issue.

Don’t know which countries are available for “working holiday” visa, but that is something you could look into. I have met people in Japan who are here on that visa. At least at 22, it seems you would be eligible if you are from a country that has this reciprocal agreement.

In general, working holiday visa is the best option if she is from a country that offers this option. Having one year to decide for yourself what you want to do is great.

Only downside about working holiday as well as student visa is, that you are not allowed to work in adult-entertainment-related industries. So of course no sex or porn related jobs, hostclubs but even more innocent ones like barkeeper or working at a club are not allowed as far as I know.

Working holiday or student visa are great to get better at japanese and work some harmless part-time job at the side....maybe in preparation to land your AV-job, but you can't use these visas to land an internship there. I think that's only possible if you apply for a regular job, they hire you and are willing to sponsor your visa.

Thank you for this very helpful advice! :D And sorry for sounding naive, I'm just very hopeful and still very uninformed lol. I'll be doing more research on this so thank you for that. Also, I hope you don't mind me asking :( since you've been working in studios in japan as a creative, I really want to understand what it's like from your perspective.

Thank you for this! I'll be looking more into that working holiday visa. Thank you so much! :)

Again, thank you for the awesome advice! :) This is very helpful. If I'm eligible for the working holiday visa, I'd be willing to work somewhere else in prep for a job in AV. :)

Don't know if things have changed since the early 2000s when I arrived in Japan to work in the eikaiwa rat-race, but back then the "working holiday" visas were very popular with the instructors from UK, AUS, NZ, etc., as (IIRC) they were eligible to get one without having a proper 4-year (BA) degree and could still get a work visa with a 2-year JC diploma. The only catch was that they couldn't work full-time and there was a maximum of 30-something hours/week they could work, which obviously meant less money. And the only group that was absolutely NOT eligible for working holiday visas was Americans, who were required to have 4-year degrees to get a proper visa.

OP, you may just have to settle on getting your foot in-country (meaning visa sponsorship) by going the same route most of us did--take a shitty McJob with one of the big Eikaiwa companies and use your first year there to 1) learn the language, 2) make connections and most importantly, 3) figure out if you actually want to spend time in Japan. Trust me, it's not what you see in movies and a lot of people get burned out or pissed off or just sick of Japanese people in general by the time their first contract is over. If that's not you and you're still enamored with the place, while your eikaiwa gig feeds and houses you, start branching out, make friends and exploring your options. You'll need to find a company willing to sponsor you and a visa that will allow you to work there. The "specialist in humanities" bullshit visa I came in on allowed very, very few options, and the "instructor" visa I later had even fewer.

Of course, you could just marry a Japanese national and get a spouse visa, which would allow you to do whatever the fuck you want, but you'd probably be better off just jumping in front of a JR super-express now and get it over with.

i must admit sometimes the thought crossed my mind a few times, before the separation... :D

That's right, all my partners learn to behave before I come, otherwise I "forget" where I left the keys to the handcuffs.

Some of them could think that as a win-win though.

True, dat. I've lived here for over a decade and never once seen Tokyo trashed by a giant reptile.
Well duh, the Clintons haven't been here on a state visit since the Y2K G8 summit....

Can you imagine how epic it would be to hit Kabukicho with Bill? That perverted piece of shit would be the greatest wingman ever, especially since he's going senile now. And if any Nigerians or chimpira get stupid, he still has his Secret Service detail following him around to smack around some skinny-suit pussies or ill-mannered Africans. Of course, you could always hit the town with his wife, who I've been told is just as big a fan of vagina and always keeps some nice-looking action nearby (Huma Abedin is her longtime sidewhack), but I've also been told by a number of past staffers and campaign operators that she is the pinnacle and epitome of a cold, ruthless, savage BITCH and takes sheer pleasure in ruining your day. I admire that, but it probably wouldn't get you very far unless Hillary's a generous tipper (and I can't imagine she is).
