I know it is a very hard question but I'd greatly appreciate any tips on where to go.English google search only gave a few options, all of which are a bit on the cheaper end :(

It's possible to look for day-use Onsen hotels using Rakuten Travel, unfortunately not on the english site. Usually these "higaeri onsen"-plans include lunch, dinner (or both) and a limited time of ~6-8 hours in room and bath (sometimes private). If you're going from Tokyo, Hakone is your best bet.

Depends on your budget.... You can find onsen with private room bath (my preference) but they are not cheap... http://www.arcanaresorts.com/en/ is a really nice place which I have stayed, but for 2 people about 80,000JPY - includes dinner and breakfast.. Alternatively, you can go someplace where they have private bath for reservation... sorry for the late post...

I actually just visited Arcana last month. The room was okay but the restaurant was pretty special. I actually was looking for day-use (rent by the hour) onsen but thanks for the suggestion anyway!

This place in Hakone http://www.hakoneyuryo.jp/english/

I have not been myself, but it is on my list.

I have also tried this one already :p but it is only okay, pretty small although one of the rooms have some sunbathing chairs near the bathing area where you can possible have some outdoor fun on. So far, the best option I have found is Gora Kadan and their day trip option where you can rent their rooms for day-use for 80% of the nightly rate.
