Is it OK to watch porn in public?

I've done it before in the cafe but mine was adult site. Well my job make me often search many escort site so... Eventually, A guy in suits followed me to the station and asked me what I was watching at in the cafe and I was the one who considered to call the police! :pompous:

The article is pathetic, she evidently just wanted to write a story about being outraged to gain some fame.

Yes, it's wrong to watch porn in public, its age restricted content and whilst you are in your little porn bubble anyone could be viewing it. Why should parents need to explain to their kids why some AV star has a bunch of guys fucking her ass and jizzing on her face just because you haven't got the decency to watch adult content in private.

I saw a guy watching it on the Yamanote on a Saturday evening, full bushed lady having some guy fucking her in full view of me. I commented loudly enough to shame him into getting off at the next stop and people in the carriage staring at him.

I like porn, but I wouldn't sit at my office PC watching porn during my lunch hour (I think HR may fire me) so why would I do it in a public space where anyone can see it.

"Mummy, why is that man's chinchin all pixelly?"

I would, but wait, I work from home. Erm, let's not go there.

But yeah, in public - morally I'm not offended, but from an etiquette point of view - there are things you don't do in public, watching porn is one of them, others include picking your nose and/or ears, clipping toenails, farting, belching - all bad taste.

I saw a very similar article recently (perhaps it might even be by the same person?) who called it "harassment". How watching porn in public is considered "harassment", beats the hell out of me!

Anywho I'm in the same boat with bergmann and NormalGuy, in that I just find it to be one of those things you probably shouldn't be doing in public.

Any guy who would be uncomfortable sitting next to some other guy watching explicit gay porn on his phone should not be watching hetro porn on his.

I use to work as customer support for an ISP back in 1996. This was back before we had such things as sexual harassment clauses and classes etc... The ISP had a Usenet server that pulled whatever from other Usenet servers. The ISP was located in one build, so we were on the LAN to the Usenet server. All the guys who worked in my row of customers service guys would spend at least part of their day on alt.binaires.pictures.erotica.{whatever} Now a day I wouldn't be caught dead doing it, but it sure was fun back then.

This was a while back, but I remember a story in the papers about a Tokyo driver who was watching a porn DVD on his car navi screen, and was pulled over by a motorcycle cop who charged him with public obscenity.

What about reading those cartoon porn magazines on the train. I've seen that often (mostly older/middle aged fat guys) and I myself personally would never do that. Can we blame this on the culture here in Japan?

Yeah, in decades past reading manga on trains and in other public places was about as common as reading, texting etc on a smartphone is today, and quite a lot of it was soft porn and some of it hard and/or violent porn. It was so common one hardly noticed it.

So what's the difference? It's the same thing except no page turning......

No really fundamental difference I guess, but I didn't think much of the practice back then either.

I have a clear memory of one of the first times I encountered it, must have been in 1990. Some guy was sitting in a seat on a train reading one of those big thick manga books, and I was standing in a position where I could see the pages clearly. One was a full page and pretty detailed drawing showing a buxom young woman naked and tied down with a look of agony on her face while someone was cutting off one of her nipples with a razor blade. The next page showed a smaller but more close-up drawing of her nipple, the razor blade and sadist's hands. I remember two thoughts at the time - one that the guy was surely going to be arrested and two that I hoped my early adolescent son who was in Japan with me at the time didn't ever see anything that extreme.

Phones are more private and thus better than paper-copy manga I suppose, easier to shield from the eyes of other people, especially if you use one of those special privacy screens that make the screen much darker if you aren't looking straight at it.

Watching porn in public shows a stunning lack of self awareness!
Some things you just don't do.

Exactly!!

I saw some young guy reading porn on the train recently and picking his nose and eating it. My stomach was really starting to turn. I almost got up and popped him but thought better of it. I just got up and moved. Still haunts me at times......

Don't forget the guys who read the sports newspapers that have the 1 bonus page focusing on pornography.
It's still funny to see salarymen flip the page and a naked chick pops up for everyone to see.

As a student in the 90s just discovering the joys of sex, it was torture for me to see these images in
public and being able to do nothing about it.

The person is in public, possibly creating a sexually hostile environment. Bad form.

For some people all the world' illsvare the fault of athe Patriarchy. Try your favorite search engine with the term "#fartrape"

Oh my, you weren't kidding! One of the first results was "Can a fart be misogynist?" blog post...

And people wonder why some see the label "feminist" as something negative.

Yeah no, I don't buy that logic as this person wasn't purposely showing said video in plain sight. You could argue that he could've unintentionally created such an environment, but according to the article was watching it in a way that almost all of the fellow passengers wouldn't have known what he was watching. From the sounds of it, it looks like he was trying to watch the video in peace without disturbing anyone, and didn't realize the person sitting next to him couldn't honour his personal space. That doesn't change the fact what he did would usually be considered inappropriate, and possibly illegal depending what country you're in perhaps. But calling it as "harassment" is a big stretch when he clearly just minding his own business. Perhaps the writer of the article should've done the same.

It's a loaded term for sure. Still, to what extent does "minding one's business" excuse such behavior?

The whole thing makes me think of this:

Your rights end where mine begin. That's generally a good measuring stick.

Is it legal? Depends on the country.
Is it "moral?" To the individual probably not, but that's not anyone else's concern. Moreover, some cultures (Japan) don't demonize sex and porn to the extent that other countries do. So practice some cultural understanding.
Is it tacky as hell? Without a doubt, but again, that's judging by our culture and values.

I always found amusement with the "How do I explain this to my kids?!?!" I dunno about you guys, but I've watched porn since I was in 5th or 6th grade, and I turned out just fine and dandy. My parent's didn't really need to "put it in perspective" for me or anything. But if you kid has questions about it, explain it maybe? That's kinda part of being a parent. The biggest bitch about gay marriage were conservative (not politically, but the "not so outgoing" meaning) parents were bitching about having to explain two dudes marrying each other, and everyone said "be a parent and explain it!" Well, this isn't all that different, IMO, if that's your argument.

Then the whole idea that someone can watch porn and trigger someone else to do something is just silly. That's the ol' school shootings happen because of violent video games and movies, then the whole GamerGate bullshit, about how video games make gamers sexist or misogynists. Didn't fly then, doesn't fly now.

I don't have kids but have had the experience of trying to explain porn to a children who were definitely too young to understand. Many kids are able to process "love scenes" in movies or other media because most already understand physical affection. They don't understand the stuff that isn't really shown though so when they encounter some media that shows this, even they know what an adult body looks like naked, it is in fact hard for them to process.

Even "regular" sex can look pretty violent to a kid. Lots of what goes on in porn will definitely look very violent to a kid, even a "young adult" past puberty but not having any sexual experience. Same goes for young people who have had some sexual experience but not much.

Don't act so amused until you have to deal with it yourself.

Personally I think that it's fine watching porn on your smartphone (small screen) in a public space as long as you make sure kids aren't around.

The adults who look at your screen, they just need to take responsability for that.
