With Rakuten Mobile scrapping their free-tier (1 GB or less) plan in July, I am looking for a cheap alternative. Is KDDI's Povo service good (reception, ease of use)? Are there any other recommended providers? Thanks.

I believe current customers get the free pricing until end of October, but yeah I am also looking for a new operator. I mean if I need to give my monies to someone I rather it to be anything else than Rakuten.

Their free plan has been worth what I have been paying, but just barely.

Had some time last night, so I took a look at Povo's application process. Started on their web site (Japanese), where they tell you how to request MNP from your provider. Rakuten was just a few clicks and they give you the reservation number.

Then I had to download and install the Povo2.0 app for the application process. Give them your email, address, credit card, and take photos of your head and ID. This last part was kind of annoying. They make you take photos of your ID front/back and at an angle to show the thickness. Then you have to take head shots slowly looking up and turning left/right. Took a few tries to avoid any errors.

Submitted the application last night, and they emailed a rejection this morning saying there was a mismatch between my ID and info/blurry ID photo. I used my Residence Card, which has a hologram on it, so I did it again using a MyNumber card instead. That worked and they approved it within an hour.

From there I took a screenshot of the QR code for the eSIM to scan it off my computer. Installed and activated the eSIM and changed the APN info. Verified that calls and data work.

Indoor reception seems similar to Rakuten (not quite full bars). One thing I noticed is that if you don't add one of Povo's data topping packages, the speed is about 128 kbps. That's fine, since I mostly want it for occasional calls. Even if I add one of the smaller packages, it's still cheaper than OCN, etc.

I recommend Mineo.

I’ve used it for years. It’s cheap, never have a problem with connection, no contract.

There is no English support, so you need to be able to navigate the process though.

Lol . Im so used seeing the “service” and “provider” words in a different context here that for one second I thought you were looking for cheap escorts using their own cars to meet clients :ROFLMAO:

Personally, Rakuten Mobile have d best value for money. Povo u can get zero yen a month, but only if you literally dont apply for any data plans.(their system is similar to d ones in SEA prepaid service where u apply for either a day worth of data, a week worth of data and more).

Another pros for Rakuten is that it comes with data roaming as default. So when ur out of d country, u dont need to hassle ur self with getting a number cause u get 2GB worth of data a month(if im not mistaken).

For around 1k yen with under 1GB of data usage per month, i think Rakuten has d better and much more convenient package.

Agree with above.
For main provider rakuten is cheapest at first tier 3gb data. Other providers only 1gb, however Povo can be zero without usage.
Sub providers, mentioned also above Mineo. Data are being sold at mercari or auction at very cheap price. Not for normal usage gets slow during peak hrs
