Hi everyone,

first timer here.
My partner (Japanese lady, mid 50s) and I are thinking of visiting Papillon on Friday. We have no experience with happening bars so far but are eager to try it. I read that the crowd at Papillon is younger compared to other places. Do you think this would be a problem for us?
On that day registration fee is free so that's also a nice touch to lower the barrier for a first time couple.
Thanks and regards!

Love pappillon. It's a great bar.
Just know that Japanese speaking is required to go. If you are with a japanese partner they might be ok if your speaking isn't great.
The crowd there can be younger, but it really runs a wide range. My friend who goes often is in his 50s and never had a problem. The area near the bar allows smoking, but the lounge area is big and it has lots of ventilation so it didn't bother me over there.
Sadly they blocked the peaking windows recently so no more watching others in the playroom.

I haven't been to Pappillon in months.
But I second Senpai Jack's statement that Papillon is cool and huge HapBar.
The staff there are really cool and accommodating.
Speaking Japanese is paramount, so if you and lady friend has the language ability, then you shouldn't have any entry problems.
However, I had good friend, who recently went to Papillion for the first time and she was rather disappointed.
Of course, you (and I have) to take her account with dash of shoyu.

To my friend's point of view, Papillon is really a place where people drink, play darts, play cards, talk, (sing Karaoke), and have sex.
All in that order.... (lol)
She was kind of disappointed with the atmosphere of the HapBar in that nobody really wanted to play. (lol)
I suggested to her that she might have gone on a bad day with a bad crowd. (Last time I went there, it turned out to be a dudes night lol)
(HapBar fun really depends on the mood and the personality of the crowd of that given day.)
The crowd at Papillon is on the younger side, but you and your lady friend shouldn't feel out of place.
However, according to Senpai Jack's account and my friend's experience- Looks like Papillon changed from a Waiwai HapBar to Shitori HapBar (traditional)
No peeking, Locked playroom, strict entry rules, etc. (Make sure to bring your residence identification and National Health Insurance Card)
Shitori HapBar atmosphere tend to favor Bar Regulars and newbies like you might have to be little proactive in communicating and approaching with the Bar Regulars.

I commend you and your lady friend wanting to try out HapBar experience.
Just curious, Why Papillion HapBar? Most expat folks with Japanese language ability get their first HapBar experience at Voluptuous (especially TAG vets) and then branch out to other HapBars in Tokyo.

If you and your partner's hearts and minds are not set on Papillon, may I suggest your first HapBar night at Voluptuous?
It's an easy going HapBar that is a good place to try out the world of HapBar in Japan as an expat.

All happenings bars have been like that for me at some point.
Off white being the worst imo.
Have had this experience too at Scarlett and long time ago at colors though I think those experiences were during day time so more excusable (though Scarlett was weekday daytime).
Also had experiences being ignored hardcore at Olive21 and at Retreat (performing a bondage that no one interacted with).
You can't control what other people want to do, even as a woman. Win some, lose some.
I still prefer this over a place where all guys would be immediately in your face and grope you without permission.

I'd disagree, unless you prefer interacting with other foreigners or unless you want to avoid the darts bar experience at all cost. Men at Voluptuous, both Japanese and foreign, are the most pushy of all happening bars. Not ideal for newbies who just want to test the water imo. There is a lot of information on this forum about tourists misbehaving in voluptuous.

Agree with you on the Idiot dudes both local and foreign! Alice.... But there are cool and non-pushy expats like Jack and I, as well as others who are approachable and friendly, who can teach the newbies on the ins and outs of HapBar experience at Voluptuous. I love "Shitori" HapBars myself since I can relax and not worry about the dumb shenanigans of tourists and no-nihongo expats.

Yeah, but those people also go to places like Papillon, which is why I'd say that place may be better than Voluptuous for a first time.
Of course, shitori with only Japanese regulars could feel like an unwelcoming first time though.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

To be honest, Alice was almost spot on. Personally speaking, after what I recently read here I thought it would be wise to try to avoid any pushy crowd (that in particular also includes foreigners with bad manners). I never really had trouble connecting with Japanese people and I do love Karaoke, so Win-Win. To be fair, I only considered Papillon or Voluptuous for our first time.

The real answer for the best place to visit is somewhere you know you can talk to people and relax. If you are a social outgoing person, then anywhere is probably fine for a first time. There is a reason I tell most of my referals to go when I do since if they know someone they can talk to, it helps a lot. Also I usually help introduce new people to good regulars and help them figure out what they want to do. But it's not often people can match my daytime excursions. I have taken new people to about 4-5 different bars, though usually it's voluptuous.

The Wonderful thing about going as a couple is that you can hang out and enjoy pervy conversations and in the worst case scenario, you still have each other to make some fun in the playroom 😂

Oh quick tip for papillon. The karaoke is super easily heard in the playroom so try to avoid singing if people are in there. Nothing ruins a mood like someone singing YMCA while you are DATY. 😆

Here is a post of my experiences with a "Shitori" Happening Bars in Tokyo from last year. I forged a great relationship with a couple "Shitori" HapBars, which has become my favorites. I still go to Voluptuous because the wonderful regulars (Japanese and foreign) (Male and females) and a very nice staff. (Sometimes too nice.) as well the fun "Wai-Wai" atmosphere. Yeah, I put up with the dumbf*ck tourists and prickhead no-nihongo expats. Usually I am the one getting into their faces when they act up. (Why I can't chill... sigh...) But at the same time, I met some very cool tourists and expats, who are fun to interact with..... So as Alice says Win Some, Lose Some....

Previous post:

Check out various discussion threads from late last year (2023). Jack and Gina did a lot of informal review of HapBars around Tokyo while Volup was being ready to open. Let me share with you my experiences and advice.

As I started my HapBar journey at Voluptuous (Wai-wai bar). Dress code in the main room is loose, Access to playroom is liberal, and play is allowed in the main room, Hapbar conduct is loosely regulated, and peeking is allowed in the playroom.
Yes, the opportunity to have sex with people, who have the same desire is appealing and to watch the action live is stimulating.
There are fun regulars (Both non-tourists foreigners and locals) that hang out at the Volup.
Wai-Wai HapBars are known for having "Play" happen right away in many cases without any complications.
But as TAG Manager mentioned that Voluptuous only is very liberal in allowing tourists and no-nihongo expats to participate in the HapBar activities. As I got uncomfortable with the presence of these barbarian horde and their unacceptable behavior.

I started to explore other HapBars to expand my knowledge about this unique Japanese place (which I am sure is way different from the sex clubs in Europe and other places.) Ignorant tourists think it's the same, but it's not!! Thanks to Senpai Jack and his vast knowledge of the HapBar scene. He pointed me to some of these new establishments.

I am now drawn to Shitori Happening Bars ("traditional" happening bar). Access to these establishments is highly restrictive. Well defined rules such as dress code and behavior rules in the main room, Access to the playroom is very restrictive and regulated, peeking is not allowed, and code of conduct in the establishment is very strict. These factors creates a safe environment in which the "regulars" can enjoy hanging out with each other. A lot of times, the regulars only go to that HapBar and nowhere else. These regulars are very, very protective of each other and the establishment. it's a daunting environment for a first timer to go to a Shitori HapBar. (It was for me.) After researching various Japanese experts of HapBars online (in Japanese) and their POV regarding Shitori HapBars, what I learned is that to have fun in the Shitori HapBars, an investment of your time and patience is required. Which means to get rid of your mindset that you're going to have a quick f**k. (Big mistake of all males going to these establishment and root of the problems at these places.) After learning this fact, I started to regularly going to couple Shitori HapBars and proactively formed relations with the tenchos and the staff of the HapBar at which in time they introduced me to the male regulars of the HapBar. They got to know me as well as I got to know them. In time they started introducing me to the female regulars and vouch for me to them.

What I begin to realize is that these Shitori HapBars is that for me, it became more of a "Bar" that I hangout with friends (regulars and staff) that also happen to be a place where we can "Play" if we choose so. Yes, Tabanico is right, it's hard work and time consuming. You're not going to play right away and all the time. (Thus why Wai-Wai bars are more preferable to the gaijin community). But what I found out is that it's really unique Japanese way of creating a safe environment where like-minded people can get together and enjoy each other's company. Shitori HapBars are accessible to foreigners only with the following conditions- Japanese residency requirements and very, very high Japanese language ability as well as a vibe read from the Tencho. So tourists and no-nihongo expats are out. Yes, Local customers (both male and female) can be jerks and troublesome. But since the enforcement is strict, the problem childs are nipped at the bud.

No tourists and no-nihongo expats makes the Shitori HapBars far more relaxing for me.
Now there are hybrid HapBars that combines the elements of Waiwai and Shitori.
But every owner and tenchos I have befriended are very leery of allowing tourists and no-nihongo expats into their establishments at all and feel not worth the trouble, they may bring to the regulars at the HapBar.
Thus you would think that since Voluptuous being the only HapBar that allow tourists and no-nihongo expats to partake in the HapBar experience that they would be in their best behavior.

But unfortunately it's not in their nature to do so. (Like the scorpion said to the frog)

Yeah, need to be having gay sex to enjoy YMCA!
I mean that song is basically the story of picking up a nice Twink walking around Shinjuku and showing him the ropes right? 😂

Young man, there's no need to feel down, I said
Young man, pick yourself off the ground, I said
Young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy

Young man, there's a place you can go, I said
Young man, when you're short on your dough you can
Stay there and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time

Hi all !
Thks a lot for sharing so much!
I might drop by Papillon with an adventurous lady tonight for the first time. Would any of you know if Papillon has a shower room ?
We previously enjoyed Olive21 and liked that we could refresh between plays ...
I will later report our first time at Papillon for those still on the fence ;-)
Thanks a lot in advance.

That's why I stay in 2-chome. There's nothing greater than 2-chome!

Guys, noob question. How does a single man who doesn't speak Japanese gain an entry in Papillon? Or … he doesn't? I'm in my late 20s and am free today.

You do not. How in the world do you expect to communicate with anyone if you can't speak the language? Kind of putting the cart before the horse, no?

Cannot believe they let (made?) me sing those lyrics when I was a kid.
