Positive prostitution books and movies?

Just watched on the Japanese nextflix:
Confessions of a Brazilian call girl

Was quite good. Made the life look a bit rough (I suppose its rougher in some places than others) but in the end she was a strong, independent woman and despite sliding off a bit, she got back on track and both reached goals and created new opportunities for herself.

Just to add to this list, somebody recently recommended a book to me called "Cop to Call Girl: Why I Left the LAPD to Make an Honest Living As a Beverly Hills Prostitute" that I've just started reading.

The basic synopsis is that this woman joined the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1970s which was a time when there was allegedly a lot of corruption. Sher later gave it up to become a high end escort in the early 1980s. So the book is a mixture of both parts of her story.

Haven't finished it yet but really interesting (also, no "dying prostitute syndrome" although she does end up getting arrested in a police "sting")

It's even available in Japan as a reprint from 836 Yen:-

www.amazon.co.jp/Call-Girl-Norma-Jean-Almodovar/dp/0380723042

"A former Los Angeles cop recounts her disgust at the extensive corruption she witnessed within the department, her decision to become a high-society prostitute, and the lengths to which the LAPD went to prevent her book. Reprint."

Brazilian version of "secret diary of a call girl" ?

Haven't seen it yet, but Molly's Game was just released.

I haven't seen it yet either, but I think Molly's Game is about high stakes card playing, not prostitution.

The new HBO series The Deuce, co-created by the same guy that did The Wire and Treme, focuses a lot on streetwalkers and porn stars in the 70s, I wouldn't say it's a POSITIVE portrayal, but in an ensemble cast a number of the main characters are these women and they are portrayed as actual people with fears and desires and not as stereotypes. That being said, the show portrays a lot of life on the streets, dealing with pimps, etc, so with the various struggles and violence including, yes, dead syndrome, it's not a happy show by any means.

Although it's not for the faint of heart, I definitely recommend it. Not to give away my age, but my first time in New York City was as a young lad before the Guiliani cleanup that made Times Square 'family friendly', so between the hobby and porn elements of the show, which I obviously have an interest in, seeing New York City back in the day is really interesting too.

Come to think of it, why needing comfort in books or movies about the positive aspects of a freely chosen (I assume) and well-paying (I know) job?
I could understand that need in a guy who, say, has to pick up trash or clean corpses every day to feed his kids, and didnt have any better opportunity to do so. But here...

I don't think it's a matter of 'needing comfort' (although correct me if I'm wrong). They just want media that they identify with AND is somewhat positive. I mean, I'm in the computer field and I LOVE Office Space and the IT Crowd, etc. If every show out there that referred to computer field jobs was all still 'Revenge of the Nerds' I'd probably be a little frustrated too, despite loving my career.

Yes, maybe. But the less you need reinsurances and pats in the back in this cruel cruel world, the stronger you are.
Most people hate the job I do. I dont even care to raise the middle finger anymore

Its not exactly fun to see your carreer being mocked on tv and any character you relate to getting murdered.

So yes, basically i like stories about cool girls like me just doing their thing without too much drama because it's directed by people who're not in the field and who don't get it.
Sex workers are so bad ass, we don't need that negative attitude that some movies have.

Not trying to win an argument, but pretty sure my chosen career is near if not at the top of Generally Despised Professionals...hmm, apparently only dentists are more hated. Strange; I love my dentist.

Lawyer? Lawyer was my plan B.

Hell, i even liked the idea of politician but i dont think i'd ever get the majority vote, and even if i'd get anywhere, i'd just have to pass stuff that other people want and that i dont stand behind.

But yeah, i think i was born to be a hated person. Arent those jobs the most fun?

Interesting Thread Alice and good feedback as well.... I think the reason there are not more positive portrayals of SW in media is because of the Religious aspect of society in general.. So as previously mentioned.. shows there is an opportunity for you "badass" to change the opinion by your own memoires or stories... of course that's going to be a big time investment, but if you journal (Blog or Vlog) everyday about what you did or your client did, then people want to know that. I think TV and Movies have made most people voyeuristic in general terms, otherwise, why these reality shows continue... Actually a reality show about Escorts would be really interesting and entertaining... I guess the main hurdle would be filming in a locations where P4P is legal... Netflix seems to be producing loads of content... I'm not in the industry, but..... I smell a market and potential which means $$$$ can be made. Look how 50 Shades opened the mainstream door on a otherwise sub-culture of S & M.... and I believe I read women were buying the book much more than men... Sooo..... ALICE.... BadAss in Wonderland... certainly could be quite a nice book, series, movie, etc..... The only question left is who to play you ? Nicole Kidman ? Margot Robbie ? Self ?

OK.... I know what I've typed has not added one constructive bit to this thread for which I accept flames and apologize for .... Don't underestimate yourself or your chosen profession at this stage in your life... Whatever you want to do, I'm sure there is a way to achieve it... just finding the proper people to help with the project... It doesn't have to be a "Hollywood" production and writing doesn't cost you anything but time..well and ink if you go old school... :D

I'm sure other's would agree that they would read, watch.. otherwise support that endeavor.....

Definitely. But those things bring a lot of problems. It should be anonymously since i want to have my own family and live a low profile life.

It also should not include details that can potentially harm the clients or other people in the business i have met, weather that would be with too personal information or with something that they did not want to share with the world, even withot revealing their identity.
