Quarantine Hobbies?

why would you do that? To get a specifically noisy keyboard?

I type faster and more accurately on a tactile and clicky mechanical keyboard (which is what I use at home). You can feel and hear when you've actuated the keys and don't need to bottom out the stroke, increasing speed by reducing finger motion.

For work I use a tactile-only one, the clicky switches bother my coworkers.

But I buy mine ready built, I don't have the time or workspace to build them.
next build is going to be a split ergo

That would actually tempt me to build one... I like the Microsoft ergo, but it would be waaaaaaaay better if you could independently position the sides.

Fitness, nutrition, deep stretches, watching my protein intake

Cooking, deep cleaning, decluttering and reorganizing. Love a clean and organized home

Have learned about gardening in small urban spaces

Skincare. I always keep one month’s stock of grocery and cleaning supplies so I didn’t need to hoard those however I must admit I’ve hoarded tons of face masks, serums etc. (This is not a new hobby, I’ve always been interested in beauty and skincare)

that’s interesting. you seem to simultaneously like to MariKondo-ize your place but also hoard things.
must be tough sometimes to be the Simonka Operating System :)

How many times do the members of this forum need to remind you that you can get all the facials you want for free!

For work do you use clears or browns? And yeah I tried out the ergodash mini and fell in love. If all goes well with that I'll try the lily58 next because I love OLEDs.

And to echo what you said as to why: my WPM on a mech is faster as well. The springs in my switches aren't very strong so it only requires a light touch for the board to register a press. Also I just have always loved keyboards and desktop peripherals. It's very easy to fall down the rabbit hole because of all the customizable. I've already blown over juuman on keyboard parts because I love collecting artisans and new keycap sets. Definitely not a cheap hobby

I mostly doubled down on studying Japanese - eg pushing through WaniKani, trying not to break my review streak (171 days currently).

As for keyboards, till recently I was using a loud and clicky mechanical Razer Blackwidow.
I really liked but unfortunately the keys started wearing down or something and didn’t always register, so I replaced it with a Cynosa, which is much quiter and so far I really like it.

Browns at work. I’ve never seen a commercial keyboard with clears, and I’d go still with browns anyhow for the lighter springs.

Now you got me thinking back to a project I wanted to do back in the nineties, using old brass typewriter keys to make caps for a computer keyboard. With modern switches and a 3D printer that’s doable...

This one doesn’t spark joy

Mostly have been using the downtime to take several online courses on a variety of topics including lighting, filmmaking, boudoir photography, Adobe Creative Suite, etc. (gotta keep the skill levels up).:snaphappy:

Other than that, been trying to work through a backlog of games that I bought but havenʻt gotten around to yet (RDR2, Tomb Raider Trilogy, South Park Stick of Truth/Fractured But Whole, etc) ʻcause I keep going back to modded Skyrim. ;)

Also built several mini arcade machines with Raspberry Pis and old Macs.:geek:

Leatherwork... hmmm... what kind exactly? ;)

Technically, all kinds ;) wallets, belts & straps mostly so far, plus some wrist bands & masks. Also working on carving, dying, stitching, etc.
It's all about perfecting techniques, so better to practice your skills on the simpler stuff before getting into more exotic items. I'd rather have wallets with a few rookie errors than, er, things I would wear.

I had planned to catch up on all the boardgames I have bought but never played; try to paint some of the little men from some of them; unpack after moving into my new apartment; study Japanese and French; start blogging again; do bodyweight exercises.

In the end all I managed was to drink too much, eat too much, about 100 pressups and 50 chinups a day, and lots and lots of sexy encounters.

Not sure whether to be happy or sad.

(At least I am back in the gym now, so hopefully I will work this beer gut off in the next couple of months)

Well the sexy encounters sound pretty good! Shame the board games didn't get as much attention tho

How much building do you enjoy? If you just want one you can use right off the bat I'd recommend taking a look at Ducky and Varmillo; their mech keebs are nice and come with great keycap sets.

However if you like building I would suggest getting a kit off of KBDFans or KPRepublic. If you're not confident soldering get a hotswap PCB. My first one was hotswappable but my next build is going to be a split ergo that will definitely involve soldering. I'm also going to make a custom macro pad for media that I'm pretty psyched about. Here are some helpful sources:

Figuring out what kind of switch you like is pretty much trial and error. There are plenty of sound samples on youtube but the material of the case really affects the sound so it's impossible to know what it will sound like. I have Kailh Box Whites and they sound super different in my alu case as opposed to what i've seen on youtube. However I'm a huge fan of clicky tactiles so any sort of box white, jade or navy switch would be good for me. My work set up is 100% remote so I don't need to worry about annoying coworkers with my machine gun keyboard. If I was in an office I'd probably go for Kailh speed silvers.

Could I be more of a fan of yours?

I was hoping to come to Japan this year, but seeing as how the US is seeing a surge in cases, I'm probably going to be stuck in my bunker for the foreseeable future.

I got into mechanical keyboards in 2011, still rocking a Filco Majestouch 2 with Cherry Blues. Haven't looked into building yet, but now I'll take a look.

I too was very enthusiastic the first couple of weeks or so, but now I'm just bored of everything besides distracting myself. My sleep quality is awful now that I don't have a rigid routine.

I built a new PC, dabbled in streaming and podcasting, and tried out some new games. That's about it... lol

Ah it's a shame covid ruined all international travel; would've loved to meet a man of keeb culture. I haven't ever tried a filco myself but I've heard very good things about them. Also, excellent choice with the cherry blues. I was using a logicool gaming keyboard with the same switches before I built my current daily driver. It is quite an expensive hobby though..very easy to go down the rabbit hole

I am working out more and studying Japanese a bit.

I thought I was working out more but drinking three or four times what I used to sorta cancelled that out and I've put on about six pounds.

But to the point, I got so bored I started rummaging through my boxes of Japan crap and found an old, semi-functioning Buffalo 500 gig HD that I bought at the Osaka Yodobashi Camera back in 2007. As I suspected, it is still loaded with all sorts of retro fetish porn and random crap from back in my file-sharing days. And whenever my other half is out of the house for a few hours, I've been quietly transferring files to a new (secret) 3TB drive at my work station and throwing in a quick wank if time allows and I'm bored/inspired enough.

It's interesting, beating off with a porn clip you haven't seen in almost 14 years. It's almost like having a fling with an ex from many years ago. At least, that's what I tell myself, after I've cleaned up the mess and evidence, to avoid feeling completely pathetic. If that doesn't work, I look up my ex from that time period on Facebook, bask in the glory of her wrinkles and sags and shitty life and feel instantly better.

I'm playing a truckload more golf than usual, and for a while it was getting better. But now I seem to be as useless as I ever was.

At work we are doing all sorts of things we never had the time to do before, so hopefully when the tourists come back we'll be in a better place.
