Shrine gave rice, what do

Went to a shrine I have not visited previously for hatsumode, they gave me a small bag of rice to bring home
Not sure what to do with it
Like do I cook it and eat it? Scatter it around the house?
I am quite sure I am not to just throw it away...

You're supposed to eat it (usually along with breakfast). Cooking first highly recommended.

It's quite good, but involves a lot of chopping. Supposed to keep away disease and the like. I see premade sets of herbs for it at the grocery around January.
