I’m thinking about going to a happening bar, I mean I’m still on the fence about it since I’ve never been to one but I kind of want to and tomorrow’s my last chance to get in a little fun before I get two of my wisdom teeth taken out and will then be hella miserable for at least the next two weeks.

If I fly solo, as a woman with minimal to “mostly I’m just to lazy to speak it” levels of Japanese would Bliss Out be my best option?

Or is anyone planning to go in general and wouldn’t mind a tag-along?

75% certain I’m going to hang out and not hook up just to not get anyone’s hopes up.

Going to a Happening Bar is an idea I have in mind, but the outrageous entry fee for single guys has always put me off. I don’t like to burn my money like that.

I'd suggest either going directly to Bliss Out (call them when/if you have trouble finding it, and they will send someone out onto the street to lead you to the place...quite easy to miss) or first try 9259 if you can speak/fake a bit of Japanese for a few minutes to gain admittance. If you can get in, you can then switch to English for speaking with the staff and other customers. If you don't get in, you could then go to Bliss Out.

Note that 9259 will keep a copy of your ID whereas Bliss Out does not seem to do this, at least not consistently. So if you care about that...

If either place has a "special event" night, that would be a big plus for it.

If you are planning to go on a Sunday (did I get that right?), it might be pretty dead with nearly nothing happening. In my quite limited Sunday experience in HBs, afternoons may be livelier than evenings, probably the only day of the week on which this would be true.

Solo women are fairly rare in HBs in my experience. I expect you will get a lot of attention, perhaps more than you will find agreeable, but if anyone is bothering you too persistently, you can complain to the staff, and that should put a very quick end to it.

Wow. I knew HB systems were bias towards men but not as much as I’m now realizing they are. I’m a little surprised more ladies don’t take advantage of HB for their drinking since it’s basically free entry and at Bliss Out 2000¥ for all you can drink if I’m reading that right.

I might wait until the Kinbaku event night to go since @wwanderer says it might be dead tonight. Weather’s kinfa miserable anyway.

Also I notice a lot of people recommending 9259 as a place to try first and Bliss Out being the backup. Is there a reason for this? Is 9259 like notably better but more exclusive towards members? Or is it just that Bliss Out is usually so cool with anyone that you might as well try a different place for the sake of having options and a backup?

Small groups of women, 2-4 of them typically, are much more common than women going completely solo as far as I've noticed. It is pretty much like a typical "pick-up bar" scene in that regard.

There have been some thoughts on this posted in a few other threads, but basically 9259 has a more laid-back, casual and party-like atmosphere and tends to have bigger crowds compared to Bliss. The staff at 9259 is more friendly and interactive; they act like hosts of a party whereas the Bliss staff pretty much acts like staff at a normal bar. Personally I like the facilities at Bliss somewhat better, and despite the narrow spiral stairway being a pain to traverse (as well as a terrible fire trap), having the playrooms on a different level than the lounge/social area, as they are at Bliss but not 9259, seems wiser to me. One of them is cheaper than the other (can't recall which), but the cost is insignificant anyway for single women.

I speak Japanese and I would tag along but not today, I'm only free from tomorrow to Wednesday

ps : having 0% hopes, I'm going anyway and I just think it's nice to go with someone.

it's cheaper than p4p and it's for a longer time.

There are a lot of places you can drink for free as a girl in kabuki cho.
Try EVE, Izekeya or Love on the beach (last one also good for sugaring sometimes). Adam and Eve was free drinks, karaoke and sugaring but i think they are gone and not sure if replaced by something with the same sythem or something else.

Except for that, there are tons of bars that have a basic nomihodai for 1000~3000 yen

Well I never wound up going, cleaned my house and napped a lot instead, I kind of hate the rain so the middle of a Typhoon doesnt sound like a good time for me.
Thinking about going to Bliss rope night and maybe checking out a lot of those other places!

I wonder if these places ever have very frequent customers (could be almost every night) who are women who drink heavily, perhaps have a drinking problem, but have trouble affording it...but don't play or even socialize with any of the other customers...could be quite elderly women too. And if so, what do they do about it, if anything. (This is the way an American thinks, always looking for a way to game the system.)

there are no red necks in Japan yet :D
there are some regular girls in SB but they socialize (mainly with regulars) and don't seem to be heavy drinkers. in 9259 I never saw the same people, but I can't be called a regular I guess, I went there 5 times only

Not sure the next time we are going but would love to see if we can meet up at bliss. Would be great to have someone we know was going to be there we could chat with. Having just moved here would love to ask all sorts of questions about life in Japan. Let us know when you might be going if you want. Schedules can be tough but extra incentive of knowing someone will be there who speaks English might make it more of an incentive. But we have to catch last train. Not like Saturday. Although that resulted in our first love hotel experience too. Lol. Cheers

Actually I've run into a few over the years, but not in HBs fortunately. But to be clear, I've never seen anyone in an HB whom I thought to be taking advantage of the system in such a way...even for a single guy it could be an inexpensive way to drink if he was a heavy drinker I guess. Anyway, just an idle speculation.

Ah ah, and you scold us when we mere male mongers just want to find a fair deal and complain when we don’t get it! (I’m not American though so maybe thats why I can’t get this God-given right... :D)

We were just talking about this too. Granted we have only been the one time but we like the idea of going to bliss out to pre party if we are going out in Tokyo clubbing. A couple of drinks. Maybe (hopefully) a quick visit downstairs together and then head out. Beats the Nigerian happy hour guys. Much rather start the evening there than some shady place.

If I were much of a drinker it's something I would consider as sort of a pre-game meetup place, especially since they have their "Cafe time" events too at least at BlissOut where women not only get in free but entry comes with a meal, so you go in, get a free lunch, and then if the mood strikes have some fun or just leave with your friends to go someplace else.

I have in my mind such a bad image of Bliss but I haven't seen it yet so if it turns out to be like an okay looking place hell I might go there just to hang out and read.

It’s probably too dark inside to read. Lol. But hopefully you go and enjoy it. I think we are going to the ropes event on the 15th. Like that it’s last train friendly time.

You will like it!
But dont expect a show (unless it changed since I visited), there is just a shibari master and assistant in a corner and if you want to, they will transform you or your partner in a motionless bundle of roped flesh! :D

Honestly, if my picture wasn’t enough indication, that sounds like my ideal night out.
