I am lucky enough to visit japan for a second time this year, but this time is a little different and I have a question. Since my last trip, I have found myself a very lovely lady and we will be traveling together this time.

Recently, my doctor prescribed me viagra to help with a rather embarrassing problem.

My SO and I are going to be traveling together, and we hope to bring a small supply (~3) of these pills with us, I was curious about the difficulty involved in traveling to japan with a prescription such as Viagra.

As i understand it, it's not on a banned substance list. Will it be possible to simply pack the pills in my carry-on? Presumably in the original bottle and pack a copy of the prescription along with it? Do i need to declare it on my customs form? If yes, do I have to declare it specifically as Viagra or can I get away with "Prescription Medication"?

If anyone has experience traveling with it, what has been your experience? Am i over thinking things?

I think you are overthinking. I travel with cialis along with my other meds.

I've heard from a few friends that they've traveled into Japan with magic blue penis pills in luggage.

No need to be embarrassed about it.

When travelling to any country you are technically required to have copies of the prescription on you. Realistically I've only had them go through my medicine once and it was more "what is it for? Oh OK." then thinking you are smuggling.

You're allowed to have up to a one month supply on you. More than that, and you need to apply for a form called a yakkan shomei.

So as long as you have no more than 30 or so pills, you're fine.

The chances that they'll go through your luggage at all is fairly small, and if it's in a container that's has the original label, and it's a medication that's legal in Japan you'll be fine.

The Yakkan Shomei is not a serious hassle btw. Fill in the form attach prescriptions email, they respond in a couple days with approval or questions. I have yet to have had to present it, first time I even offered it, customs officer acted like she didn't know what it was (ymmv).

If you tick 'no' for all the questions on the customs form, and you don't look dodgy, I think the chances of getting searched are very very small.

I'm a youngish guy who has done something like 5 short trips to Japan in this year alone. And I'm not exactly a 'business' traveller lol (I always tick tourism box). If you did this for Australia, it would raise some eyebrows...(anyone ever seen border security australia TV show??).... but yet I just entered Japan again and they didn't even ask any questions though I did note that they looked at the many entry stickers.
Also in many other countries ive noticed that sometimes they randomly search you/make you put stuff through xray even when you dont declare anything (which is how it should be done imo)
Makes me wonder how much actual illicit drugs get into Japan...

They always have drug dogs sniffing the bags when i am there. I think they rely on this more than on searches.
I have indeed seen some airport security shows, and they do claim that people can make drugs look like very common objects and hide them very well inside things, but the security finds them with the dogs anyway!

Also yes, from the Australian border security shows i learned to not bring nests of shallow spit in your baggage.

Oh OK. I haven't seen them yet - I usually arrive Haneda in early morning.
I'm not a drug smuggler so I don't mind them actually...
They're usually super-cute labrador/beagles :playful:

I usually use Narita. The dogs are super cute, too bad your cant pat them. Haneda seems to be indeed very loose at customs and immigration.

The dogs are mostly theater. Most of the time they know who the smugglers are before they get on the plane in the country of origin.

There's always someone talking, that's how the authority always know. Also have you seen the x-ray machine on the airports? It's really good. You can't hide anything.

Viagra (and similar stuff) is absolutely no problem.
However be careful with ham, salami etc

If you do bring ham, salami, beef jerky etc. the chance of getting an inspection is much much higher when the dogs are around.

Who'da thought? A dog getting worked up over tasty meaty treats? :D

It's also worth mentioning that meat products are generally contraband, though. One of my colleagues got a lot of grief for trying to being back a large amount of jerky from New Zealand.
