January 21st, 2025 sees the swearing in of Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the US. With that, the previous presidential election thread has been archived. Given there will be a large amount of discussion centered around US politics, post your musings and thoughts here. As the 2028 presidential election approaches, I'll try to update this top post with relevant information.

It's weird that the ADL (anti-defamation league) would bother to defend Elon's salute. Does Musk have some kind of blackmail on them to make them put out a statement? Or maybe they're just trying to cull favor with Elon since he has a lot of political power now.

It is ironic that a group that fights anti-semitism would try to cull favor with someone like that when a big criticism of Germans during the 30s and 40s is that so many regular Germans went along with Nazism because the Nazis were in power and people were simply trying to cull favor or advance themselves professionally/politically/whatever and you have to get along with the powers that be to do that.

It seems like it was a nazi salute though. Elon is totally nuts and I'm sure he is an admirer of fascism and all the "masculine" ideology that goes along with it so in his mentally unwell state he decided to flash the salute as a display of "euphoric machismo."

Elon already participated in a Neo-Nazi campaign against them led by Irish Neo-Nazi Keith Woods. I think they just don't want to rock the boat with the new administration right off the bat. Pretty craven

to answer the question about what has been done so far:

Revoked birthright citizenship, revoked caps on prescription drug costs, closed the southern border, froze government hiring, revoked telework, and much more.

I had a nice job lined up I'd be able to work from Japan in, with the US government. Scuppered (only reason I wanted it was the Japan part tbh).

Some departments are being gutted because they don't have enough office space and anyone who can't return will be fired.

Oh! Anyone hired based on "DEI" is being fired.

That's what I can think of just off the top of my head.

Edit: removing transgender and non-binary protections as well.

He can't do this via EO since it's in the Constitution, but yeah, let's see if SCOTUS lets him get away with it.

So all the mediocre white men hired and promoted over more qualified POC will be fired?!? J/K, we all know "DEI" is just code for "POC".

Yeah he has 4/9 justices in the bag and 2 more that will likely vote for him.

Meanwhile for "DEI" he definitely means both colored AND disabled. When applying to Fed jobs they had a questionnaire about disabilities and committed to hiring a certain percentage if you had documentation.

He's firing all these people who finally got a good job.

It's unconscionable and it's not even 24 hours into the term.

Oh and my field of law? Completely gutted last night. We have to work with a couple of Fed agencies which is impossible when the agencies are already collapsing under the weight of likely mass firings and being forbidden to hire.

One person I want to run for 2028: Michelle Obama. She has a laundry list of accomplishments herself and while she doesn't want the role, as she's said herself, she was polling to easily beat Trump.

And I would just love the right wing meltdown if an Obama replaced a Trump.

But the most petty is they removed every president but Trump this time. Before we had all the way to George Washington.

(d) "Female" means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell.

At conception, every person is biologically and phenotypically female. It's not until 6 weeks gestation that the Y chromosome begins to affect in-utero development.

So, all my fellow Americans with a penis who thought they were men but are now told by the government that we are actually women: wassup?

IMO they really should not try to push another woman in general, based on history I have seen so far. Just the reality as it is.

Not just a woman, but a woman of color. Yeah, America is not the country we were taught it was growing up. Misogyny and racism are alive and well, and getting stronger.

You're absolutely right I just... really want the schadenfreude.

Then again I am moving my plans for getting out to basically front and center even if it's not Japan. I've read way too many history books where people said "Man I saw the signs in the first year(s) but thought eveyrthing would be fine, I should have gotten out while I could!"
