I'm not that hopeful, but it would be to their benefit to amend the nationality law to allow dual nationality. Perhaps restricting certain roles to mono-nationals, such as police, military, fire, and national level elected officials.

It is not only about kanji. I would be limited only to the first and last name, thus middle name would be lost.
they shut up for sport competition etc...in so many countries politicians have dual nationality, it's not a problem at all.
I have PR and main reason why I didn't get citizenship was requirement to get proper Japanese name.
In my case it would be more interesting and complicated. In the country I'm from patronymics are used as middle name, i.e. it is not something that can be easily dropped. To be honest I would not worry about that a bit. I would trade all my middle names for a Japanese passport. Who uses them anyway? And who says you cannot use a name that is not official?
You are right, it is possible to use katakana nowadays. The last time I was interesting in this topic only kanji was allowed, so I guess I stuck in the past then .I don't know where you got that info from but you don't have to change your name at all.
You are allowed to use your current name in its Katakana form.
