Who would non-Americans vote for in Nov?

Seems the old adage is true, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I actually consider that quite the compliment.

Relatives always say I'm the closest living thing to my grandfather. In polite company, people would laud him as a savvy, successful businessman. Behind closed doors, those same people referred to him as cold, calculating and ruthless...or simply a real piece of shit you could never turn your back on. Nothing gave him a thrill like making a buck.

My problem is that money never gave me that same thrill, so inheriting those genes never made me rich. What it did do, however, is make me remarkably effective working in the world of politics, where I could weasel my way into my kind of thrills--the kind you get while really drunk or really high with your pants around your ankles.

If you've never watched "Charlie Wilson's War," it's a fantastic movie. Inspiring, even.

I would say that's a pretty accurate and insightful summary of life in America. And it's really the point my Danish client was trying to make. His country is a small, homogeneous country where everyone works hard to contribute, receives a lot from the government and pays back a lot in return. Not unlike Japan, for that matter. America is a fucking free-for-all, the greatest experiment in free market capitalism and Social Darwinism in history. The brilliant get rich, the weak fall through the cracks and hope the rich are charitable enough to throw them enough crumbs to survive. I've read all those studies that suggest that socialist northern European countries have the happiest populations, while the average measure of happiness in America is remarkably lower, and I would absolutely agree with those studies...but in the midst of all of that and our greed and ability-based economic model, we also managed to build the most powerful economy and military in the history of the world. So go figure...there's a price for everything.

But I have my own biases. My grandfather came over from Japan as a semi-literate 9yo penniless child to work for 25-cents a day in agricultural fields, and before he died had built one of the richest and most successful corporations in the state. And he had nothing but contempt for Japan. He would go back occasionally to flaunt his wealth to his rural buttfuck relatives (he was an arrogant guy, to be sure) but there was one lesson he insisted on making sure we remembered: Japan is a country for fucking losers, where you can bust your ass your entire life and never get rich. And America is the greatest country in the history of the world because everything is made of money and any man with brains and balls who works hard can die a millionaire. Therefore, if you're in America and can't get rich, you're either lazy or stupid and a fucking loser and should commit harakiri because you're an embarrassment to your family.

I think if he were alive today, he'd definitely be a Trump supporter.

"So go figure...there's a price for everything"....... the lack of transparency means that the average Joe doesn't know the price he is paying.

Those Americans that have traveled and worked abroad for an extended time start to look at life in America differently. There plenty of American millionaire expats in Asia that decide to go "local" and the US becomes a place for them to holiday, visit family, and get the kids a University degree. I don't have any hard data to support that, but my impression in Tokyo is that most of the lifers are Americans.

Some expats in Asia even renouncing US citizenship to avoid the reach of the IRS. Which I can totally understand ....not just from a financial point of view, but to simply avoid having to deal with the people that work at the IRS. If there was a Global Institutional Incompetence Index I would expect the IRS to be right up there. Having to deal with the IRS.....that is one example of the "price" Americans pay. Dealing with anyone that works at an airport is another ...

I'm an outsider, but US politics has been fucked for decades. And it seems it's just getting worse.
GW demonstrated many times that he was dumb as fuck.
Obama promised everything with his great charisma and message of hope but actually delivered nothing.
Then the unbelievable fact that you had to choose between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in 2016. It was like they were trying to win the corruption Olympics. The Morally Bankrupt Manchild vs the Smiling Avatar of "Suicide".
And now it's that same egomaniac douchebag Trump vs the dementia ridden child-sniffer Biden. What the fuck.

The problem with all this is, right now the USA actually needs a strong leader who can bring people together from the centre. Maybe that's an impossible task now. But rest assured, neither Trump nor Biden will bring anyone together. Regardless who wins, the rage between the right and the left will only get worse.
And on a global scale, this is really really bad. As much as other countries may resent US power around the world, a lot of it is necessary. Just look at Nth Korea and Iran strutting around making threats like they're big dogs. Look at how an actual big dog China is behaving with their renewed pressure on Hong Kong, their movements in the Sth China Sea threatening Taiwan, their bickering with India and their economic bullying and cyberattacks of Australia and other countries that rely on their trade for daring to ask for an investigation into Covid 19. Meanwhile, the US, the only country with any significant presence globally that might be able to curb China's appetite is literally tearing itself apart. This could be a lot more serious than just people being upset at who gets elected president in Nov.

If I had to choose either Trump or Biden, I would choose Trump, simply because it would be more interesting for the world to go out with a bang than a whimper. But if there was literally anyone else a little more reasonable, I would choose them. But I'm not American, so all I can do is sit here far far away and hope they get their shit together.

I always thought from the start that Obama was way overhyped, but in his defense you have to say that he had to deal with being a president without a majority and with those tea party brain farts who thought doing a government shutdown every 2nd week was a cool thing to do.

The political system in America is rotten since only 200years or so, but at least there always used to be a culture to work out some sort of compromise and get things done. That got totally lost over the last decade.

Im old enough to remember people saying exactly the same thing about the prospect of a George W Bush second term.

100%.
I think Trump is a douchebag who should never have run, but you gotta admit, his opponents and the media have made his job literally impossible.
I agree with the douchebag part but from my perspective the media and opponents just proved he's more of a pos than anyone could have imagined. He has no idea about how to run a business so how could he ever run a country.

Well his business was all about putting his name on buildings and stuff. Where he has been a marketing genius, I grant him that, is to make the brand so attractive despite the obvious flaws of the person.

You still think/believe that "his" brand is still attractive? I can't wait until the J. Epstein tapes get released but maybe not in my lifetime.

Of course not anymore, or still just for his cult followers.
But I must admit, I found the Apprentice fun , and I slept once in one of « his » hotels.

As much as I'm concerned about possibly having a severely demented geriatric in the Oval Office who will be a puppet for his staff, the prospect of a Trump second term is alarming in the sense that he'll have nothing more to prove, nothing to lose as he's termed out and that's a very dangerous place for an egomaniacal, petulant child. As it stands right now I'd have to bet on Trump losing in November, but then again--like every other establishment GOP hack four years ago--I said that many times during the 2015-2016 season and he proved us all wrong every time.

Most memorable:

1) "Blood coming from her...wherevers." We were all like, HE JUST LOST THE FEMALE VOTE. HE'S DONE. We were wrong.

2) "[McCain] isn't a hero. He's a hero because he was captured. I like guys who weren't captured." We were all like, HOLY FUCK, HE'S FUCKING FINISHED. THE PARTY WILL DROP HIM. We were wrong.

3) "THEY EVEN LET YOU GRAB'EM BY THE PUSSY." The entire Republican universe froze when that shit came out. Even Paul Ryan was like, FUCK THIS SHIT. We all began planning our talking points for election night when Hillary won by 20 points. The party finally began calling for Trump to step down. I was enlisted in a desperate, last-ditch effort to nominate someone else because we knew Trump could never win now. And he proved us all wrong. So whatever you do, don't count this asshole out just yet. He's got a supernatural ability to keep coming out on top.

Personally, I always wanted Condy Rice to run for president. She really should've been the first black president (unlike Obama, her parents are actually black Americans), and first female president as well. She's experienced, intelligent, respected and respectable, classy, modest and calm and people instinctively trust her. When she gave that phenomenal keynote at the 2012 GOP convention I was sure she was considering it, so in 2016 when it became clear that Jeb Bush was a fucking loser and Trump began climbing into a double-digit lead, guys like me were suggesting reaching out to Condy to see if she'd jump in the race. We even invited her to keynote a fundraiser for our state party. She flat-out refused to get involved in anything related to the presidential race. I guess she was the only one smart enough to avoid the shitstorm.

I'm not concerned at all about who to vote for, as I'm registered in a solid-blue state that will go for Biden, even if by that point he's dropping his trousers and waving his wrinkled dick at young girls instead of just sniffing them. I've learned my lesson and just focus on non-partisan races. You keep more friends and the election-night parties are better.

so basically what you say (which I kinda suspected too) is that any sane, intelligent, non-narcissistic, reasonable person - even a staunch patriot - would not even want the job... thats the most terrifying truth actually

I believe it takes an insanely egomaniacal, narcissistic and power-hungry sociopath to look in the mirror and say to him/herself: "I SHOULD BE THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD." In all my years in politics, I would say that about 95% of the time, those who seek elected office are fundamentally flawed individuals with flawed motivations. Honesty, integrity and decency are never prerequisites in politics, which is why it was such a natural fit for me and I did so very well.

Well that may not last long coz we don’t really consider the job holder as THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD anymore :D

That's an interesting observation. I never had the chance to live in Tokyo, but from what I could gather in my years in Osaka, I think the type of "lifer" often depends on the nationality. I worked and hung out at bars with plenty of British and Australian lifers who were more or less pretty normal, functional guys with some pretty cool life experiences who came over as young men to fuck around and get laid, made the mistake of knocking up a girl and marrying her and ended up stuck and miserable wishing they'd never come to Japan in the first place. Almost all of the time their reason for staying is that they'd made the fatal mistake of letting the wife and Japanese school system raise the kid and now that kid could never function properly back in the UK or AUS and would probably get his ass kicked every day for being a stuttering oddity. That, and the wife wouldn't allow it.

American (and some Canadian) lifers in Osaka, however, were by-and-large a different story, at least in my experience. Most of them were odd, socially-challenged, and lot of times just plain douchebags. Most of them had never had much experience with females before coming to Japan, so when they landed in-country and discovered that just being white could get them oriental pussy, Praise Allah they were thrilled as pigs in shit. These were the assholes you saw meticulously studying their Japanese grammar books and spending evenings in the free municipal language classes so they could bump up their JLPT scores, prancing around in yukatas in summer trying to gush in their newfound effeminate Japanese language skills and spending the remainder of their time writing online blogs where they lecture other wishful douchebags back stateside about their life-changing transformation into turning into a genuine Japanese. These pricks never come home, but it's not like anyone is missing them.

But the IRS is an entirely different reason to stay away. I've been raped by them more times than I care to remember. I go drinking with a guy who's an SSA (supervisory special agent) in the IRS enforcement division, and hearing his stories about large seizures makes my dick soft. He's a good guy, otherwise, but I always keep one finger over my asshole when hanging out with someone who makes a living supporting government-sanctioned robbery.

Things may get more interesting on the Epstein front now they have arrested Maxwell. Seems to take a Netflix documentary to get "justice" moving.

Yeah now you mention it, most of the wannabe japanese tribe do tend to be from north america. Any white guy wearing a yukata to a summer festival Im 99% certain never saw a naked female in real life before coming to japan.

Yeah I wear them around the house but usually change if I go outside. Generally I don't care what people think but it attracts attention I don't want.
