Your Favorite Japanese Movies

紀子のしょくたく/Noriko's Dinner Table(2005) is another really good one. It talks about a girl who runs away from home a joins a "family" service, for persons who are lonely and wish to simulate aspects of daily family life... If you can't tell i'm really into movies of this nature, lol.

Other than the old Monster movies they use to show in the US, I don't think I've watched any Japanese movies other than movies related to the Aibo TV series.

I have however watched a lot of animated Japanese movies. My 2 favorites being "Grave of the Fireflies" and "Tokyo Godfathers".

no one have seen love whirlpool ?
I was expecting more reactions about it in this forum (it's a movie about ranko party).

My recent japanese movie was Yell For The Blue Sky (青空エール)
It's a high school drama-romance (I like to watch these)
I really liked it. Good acting, good story and I thought it was produced very well. Not to forget a very satisfying ending that made me smile so hard it hurted a little.
And one more teenage romance called Wasurenai To Chikatta Boku ga Ita.

Oh I would also like to mention
Beat Takeshi's ''Brother''

That reminds me, the first Japanese porn i saw was called "under the blue sky" and was an outside porn (nothing too public though, i think it was just in the grass near a private swimming pool or something).
Nothing memorable.

My top 15 favourite Japanese movies would probably look something like this:

Red Angel (赤い天使) by Masumura Yasuzo, 1966
Older Brother, Little Sister (あにいもうと) by Naruse Mikio, 1953
Woman in the Dunes (砂の女) by Teshigahara Hiroshi, 1964
Onibaba (鬼婆) by Shindo Kaneto, 1964
Ugetsu (雨月物語) by Mizoguchi Kenji, 1953
Lovers are Wet (恋人たちは濡れた) by Kumashiro Tatsumi, 1973
Throne of Blood (蜘蛛巣城) by Kurosawa Akira, 1957
Angel Guts: Red Classroom (天使のはらわた 赤い教室) by Chusei Sone, 1979
A Page of Madness (狂った一頁) by Kinugasa Teinosuke, 1926
Eros+Massacre (エロス+虐殺) by Yamada Kiju, 1969
Boy (少年) by Oshima Nagisa, 1969
Go, Go, Second-time Virgin (ゆけゆけ二度目の処女) by Wakamatsu Koji, 1969
Branded to Kill (殺しの烙印) by Suzuki Seijun, 1967
The Pornographers (「エロ事師たち」より 人類学入門) by Imamura Shohei, 1966
Kwaidan (怪談) by Kobayashi Masaki, 1965

Some of the more oddball choices have impressed me a lot as a teen so maybe I'd be more critical nowadays if I saw them again. Also my choices are based on entertainment value rather than historical importance.

Not really a fan of contemporary Japanese cinema though I haven't made too much effort to really get interested in it.

Some impressive titles in that list! I've seen lots but not all of those.

Haven't watched many Japanese movies (gomennasai...), but aside from the more well know flicks by Kurosawa (Ran, Yojimbo), one movie I did see that I thought was great was "Twilight Samurai" ("Tasogare Seibei").
Some it some years ago as a international film festival and it really stuck with me how well it was done. Was even more impressed to read about Hiroyuki Sanada becoming a more common name in movies (like "The Last Samurai").
Very high on my list of favorite movies overall.

Reason: General badassery

Battle Royale
Reason: Weirdness and twisted violence that could only come from the Japanese imagination. It's a little like Hunger Games but with school kids.

One of the first Japanese movies that I saw was the erotic drama "In the Realm of the Senses" (1976).

Well, the kids in the Hunger games ARE of school kids age. Prim was even just 12 when she got ripped.

I've recently watched Japanese movie "Helter Skelter", it was pretty good but VERY dark and twisted, and it made me realize some things about how it is almost impossible to seem perfect to everyone and to be happy at the same time. (the movie doesn't have anything to do with that American cult by the way).

I've also caught up with Shinjuku Swan part 2. I really like the part that they go to Yokohama on a boat, definitely a bucket list thing. But its not close as good as part 1 to me, give me Yamada Takayuki! :(

A very silly comedy called "Bubble e go" (let's go to Bubble Period) where the heroin is going to the Bubble period in a wash machine which also functions as a time machine and nearly fucks her own dad in the past. A bit like Back to the Future in more idiotic . Loved it!

This is true. But the main thing about Battle Royale is that a whole class of middle schoolers (all about the same age) are turned loose on each other. Some turn into monstrous killers, others try to keep their humanity and die in the process.

Such main stream movies...tsk tsk tsk.

My recommendations are:
1. Bakamatsu Taiyoden ( based in a Shinagawa whore house) TPB it.
2. Anything about ”Shimizu-Jiirocho” (Yakuzaish) Youtube 清水次郎長 (Its like Japanese "300")
3. I suppose "The Insect Women". (Ikebukuro escorts) TPB & Youtube

Enjoy ;)

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams - First Japanese movie I ever watched. Has a special meaning for me because of the person I saw it with (and what we did afterwards;))
Always: Sunset on Third Street ALWAYS 三丁目の夕日 (series of 3 films that uses cgi to recreate postwar Japan.)
Samurai Hustle 超高速!参勤交代 (great samurai comedy. Haven't seen the sequel yet)
Bayside Shakedown 踊る大捜査線 1-4 (based on the TV drama with Oda Yuji)
Space Battleship Yamato - live action based on the anime
Cutey Honey - another live action based on an anime
Zatoichi - Beat Takeshi's take on the character. :)

Azumi - stars Ueto Aya as a badass ninja. During the final battle scene, there's a fight scene with a really cool camera move that got me into Kitamura Ryuhei's style of action films.
There was a sequel (Azumi 2: Death or Love) with a different director that was kinda meh.

Some of Kitamura's other works include:
VERSUS -ヴァーサス nutty low budget action film set in a forest. A cult classic.
Godzilla: FINAL WARS - not the greatest, but there is that one scene where Godzilla bitch slaps that :poop: Roland Emmerich version :p

I didn't know they were based on books. Wonder if I can find English translations of them :)

First one was a lot of fun (one of my fav scenes is when they have to go through the village checkpoint). Hoping the sequel is good too.
