I recently got a Netflix subscription, so I've been bingewatching like crazy for the past few weeks. Mostly on comedy TV shows though. I think it's time to switch it up a little~ :D

In my personal opinion, the best horror movies are the ones that mess with your head a lot, and don't have to show much gore or use jumpscares.

So far, movies that I recall watching include Carrie (original), Carrie (the new one), The Conjuring, Annabelle, Insidious, The Possession, Sinister, and The Babadook. I know I've seen more than just those, so I'm frustrated that I can't think of any others at the moment.. but somewhat thankful because it's almost 2:30am right now and I'm all alone in the dark.. :arghh:

Anyway, what are some of your favorites? Any recommendations? :woot:

The best thing about horror movies is if you watch them together with a girl who gets scared and needs someone to hold her tight.
Other than that they range from disgusting to dead boring to me depending on how much splatter the director needed to cover up the complete lack of any sort of at least semi interesting storyline.
The scream series has been good for that first purpose thought when I was younger ;)

Not sure if it classifies as horror, but the alien movies are not necessarily the worst ones.

Even though a lot of people might consider it sci-fi, the first Alien movie. Classic creature-stalker.

Prince of Darkness. Any movies about Satan and being possessed usually freak me out. It messed with my friend that he walked out of the theatre. When it came out on rental, I recommended to friend who was at home alone since his parents were out of town. I snuck into his house and scared the crap out of him.

A very distant contact has just made a moviecalled TThey're Watching which seems to be getting decent reviews - its available on iTunes apparently.

Not a big horror fan, but as far as Japanese horror goes I would say Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Kairo (known as Pulse in English) and his earlier film Cure are both really atmospheric and chilling movies.
Cure was great! With my brother we spent hours trying to analysing the meaning of the ending XD

I usually dont really like japanese horror movie as i find them utterly boring and unscary. One of the biggest letdown was "Dark Water": the trailer was amazing, but when you actually watch the movie... Basically you spend 2 hours looking at a wet spot growing on a ceiling (yeah, horror movie, but they should have added "for a plumber"). Ghost movie don't scare me, i find humans much scarier than supernatural entities.
Takashi Miike's "Audition" was great, the pace is slow but it gradually gives you a delicious feeling of uneasiness. And the actress playing the lead part is very beautiful.

Austrian movie "Funny Games" relies on the same feeling of growing uneasiness before falling into horror. It's rare, but i prefer the US remake over the original (remake was done by the original austrian director, though).

If you dont mind a bit of gore, "Savaged" is really nice. We watched it after work and we all were teary-eyed at the end, it's romantic-gory horror XD

It's maybe not a horror movie in the strict sense of the word, but "A Serbian Film" is incredibly horrific and disturbing. Banned in several countries, etc.

"Masters of horror" is an anthology-style series, and some episodes are really great. My favorites are "Incident on and off a mountain road", "Fair-hair child", and "The screwfly solution"
