If you want to travel then do it the week immediately following. Everything will be half price, tickets, hotels, and added bonus everyplace will be empty of tourists.
Week before is also a viable plan. I'm doing another Philippines trip (though not as much of a p4p binge as the last one, doing a beach holiday).

Also this year it's more like Golden Fortnight as old Emp-sama is clocking out for the last time for a well-deserved retirement (all that elegant waving of hands at the hoi-polloi takes its toll after a few decades, dontcha know) and the hoi-polloi are being blessed with additional holidays to celebrate the event and the enthronement of the new chappie.

Paying about half that for Manila the week before. And scored a NRT-MNL roundtrip in mid-june for a mere 20,000. I can't even go to Osaka for that price short of the night bus...
