    I can't help you with the Canadian part. But in japan, brazilian bbq is called yakiniku. Give it a try. But to warn you, they don't use huge skewers.

    Re ameyoko: my understanding is that there are lots of old style yakitori around Okachimachi. Great stuff, but I'm not sure it qualifies as nightlife.

    I'd look at bento.com and other sites to study up on what's on offer. Not just specific shops but types of cuisine. In the mid-range category, I'm partial to washoku en in marunouchi.

    Try to find an izakaya with good grilled and fried seafood. Menu should be like you find in Mediterranean locales, but with japanese seasoning. Hope that makes sense.

    Wow, these are the same pro-smoking arguments in 1990s US. I don't think the bar business went down after bans here. Anyway, bars with smoking do seem a little "cooler".
