One of the great things about Japan is that you can get Hollywood stars in commercials they'd never do in the U.S. and also pachinko/pachislot machines based on major Hollywood movies. Looks like Terminator 2 is getting a release on a new pachinko machine this year. (Too bad Las Vegas can't have major tie-ins with high def graphics like this)

The details of the payout scheme are not released yet, but they are already hyping that if you hit the super jackpot, you get three jackpots worth of balls (2000 balls x 3) plus the chance to hit another one relatively easily. At the normal rate, this is the equivalent of getting 24,000 yen in one shot, which is nice, but the odds of hitting this are sure to be less than 30% when you hit a jackpot. If it's more than 30%, I might give this machine a go.

I have seen slot machines tied into movies in the US. Though not in Vegas, but instead in the casinos in the North East run by the Native Americans.

Yeah, but the key point is "high def graphics". The movie tie-in machines in Vegas, like Star Wars, are unispired and look worse than PS1 graphics. And, they definitely can't use actual movie footage like pachiko/pachislot machines can.

The native american casinos are fairly new, maybe only 15 years old, so their machines are a lot newer, and their graphics are definitely better than PS1 quality. I've never been to vegas so i can't comment on how they might compare. The pachinko machines here are pretty spectacular though.

15 years is "newer", okay.... Anyway, Japan uses the latest graphics technology when it comes to gaming machines.
Much more fun too, even without the life changing jackpot amount. In Japan, you can play pachinko just to kill time without
burning through your life savings and maybe get lucky every few days. In the U.S., you can play slot machines for years and
never hit anything more than a few hundred dollars on one spin. Looking at boring animations sucks too.

In Japan, they even have idols and AV stars appear in bikinis on some machines.

Every time I go to Australia, I win big. Everyone plays the pennies and a few try the dollars. I go in with $150 and come out almost $1000.

I think in Australia the jackpot payouts at pokies places can be up to $10,000. But playing on these machines gets boring quick. And stupid In the long run. Like flushing money down the toilet.
Winning big multiple times seems like a fluke.

No shit? And here I was thinking they make those big fancy casinos to allow people to win money there.

Gambling is a tax for those folks who don't know mathematics.

The trick is to play poker. (Real poker, not video poker.) There, at least in Ontario, you play against the other players, not the house--they only take a cut of the pot. A friend of my dad's is really good at poker, and generally comes away up at least C$1000.

The next best is Blackjack, where the house has a smaller edge than in the other games.

Yeah, at least in poker there is more skill involved than pressing a button. Can be lucrative if you're good.

I can understand slot machines/pachinko as some form of weird entertainment, but doing it to make money is silly unless you've got an actual hack (which would probably land you in jail anyway).

Actually, the most "profitable" house game is craps becase the house edge is tiny compared to other games. The only bad thing about it is that if you bet against the shooter, everyone at the table hates your guts for creating bad karma.

When I go home to visit I'll take $100-$200 and go play $1 blackjack. I'm not there to win, I am there to enjoy the atmosphere. I can think of a lot of things that I could spend $100 that is just as pointless as gambling it. At least this way I get free drinks. I think next time I go however I am going to go play bingo with mom.

There are quite a few themed machines in Vegas nowadays. Not many movie tie-ins but TV shows and board games seem to be a plenty. Played a Monopoly themed machine while I was there two years ago and came out pretty good.

Never played pachinko. The payouts just don’t seem worth it.

You don't play pachinko for the payouts, you play to see the extra chapter in the manga or anime series that wasn't produced for TV and can only be found on pachinko. Or, you play to see you favorite super hero defeat his long time nemesis while getting you some good cash in the process.

I’d like to try this.

Are there any parlors where the machines display in English or they can teach you how the hell it works?

No English displays or pamphlets. Some machines offer English instructions on the screen, but not many.

I can answer any basic questions you might have. Pachinko looks intimidatnig, but it's quite easy to play if you
have money in your pocket.

Feel free to reply to me here or in a private message.

Ebisu Cafe - Takayama. Not in Tokyo but this would be a fun day trip I think.
