The Anything Goes Thread

Well shit, fuckitty, G_d-diddly-dammit!!!!!!! Today it was made official.

As you all know COVID-19 has had a huge, negative effect on the airline business. Fewer people are traveling therefore fewer flights, and therefore less work for pilots. Some pilots were on greatly reduced schedules such as I was; flying enough just to stay current. Many others were furloughed, whilst some were offered early retirement, and some were just laid the fuck off with no benefits. I knew it was coming since Friday (hence the severe intoxication previously reported), but today was the day I was officially notified by the company. I have been laid off.

I had planned on leaving the business within the next couple of years. It was my silly idea to retire at 17,520 hours (approx. 2 years), which I was not too far away from. I never wanted to be one of those pilots that keeps working until mandatory retirement. Still, I cannot adequately my profound sadness. I am damn good at what I do, and I genuinely enjoy all aspects of my job. There is the chance I could get rehired when the business returns to almost normal, but that could be a couple of years if not more.

Since my PR in Japan was tied to my job I would have to leave the country. Fortunately an Air Force friend was able to hook me with a job on a base in the Kanto area. It is a shitty low paying job, but it gives me SOFA status (and a post office box to receive shit from the US!). Money is not the issue. Between my military retirement, savings, and investments I don't need a "real" job. The house and cars are paid for, though I will have to put on hold the plan to buy one of the new Toyota Harrier models. My girls are both gainfully employed (not like that, you pervs!). Most importantly I can still support my SB.

So, after twenty three years in the T-37, T-38, F-16, C-17, and the 787 I bring my career as a professional pilot to a close. The only positive to all this is that I finish with 15,069 hours total. Now, let's go get drunk.

Sorry to hear you got laid off. Been there twice. At least you get to stay in Japan. You definitely don't want to come back to the States if you can help it! LOL

Cheers! I will hoist a drink and toast to you.

I really need to go to an HB with her.
You’d have to be totally ok with her getting a lot of male attention though. I know from experience it’s easier thought and said than done. But I was a HB newbie back then

Meh...the wife and I were swingers at one time. It would not be the first time I have seen the woman in my life getting rogered. As long as I get some attention. Also wik, I also like to watch.

Respect! I needed a few months to adjust being cool with it. Now I love to watch too. Not so much to be watched (for a reason mentioned way too often on this forum :)) , but made it my mission in life to do whatever I want even if I was born this way, cue Lady Gaga .

Nice resume Dave! Hope everything works out for you.

@IchigoDave how was your PR tied to your job? I thought the defining feature of permanent residency is that it is not tied to employment or marriage or whatever...

(If you don't mind my asking. Also, good luck.)

He may not have gotten PR yet? That might be why.... but I'm willing to bet he could apply for PR and get it. (Based on what I know about him and compared to others who got PR a little easier that I would have expected)

I'm sorry to hear that but glad you and the family will be okay. Considering all the stuff you've been doing up to this point, maybe it's not too bad to slow it down a little and relax.

@IchigoDave - Although you didn't get to go out on your terms hopefully as you reflect on what has happened you look at the positives. Sounds like you are way better off financially than most people would be, found another job that lets you stay in Japan and possibly get to enjoy life a lot better. Many people who are laid off or lost their jobs entirely are struggling financially, are worried about bills, health insurance, etc. And as the old saying goes when one door closes another door opens so you never know. Good luck and best of wishes to you.

I have been laid off.

Been there, done that mate so I know it just sucks right now. When they need to cut headcount they don't care if you were good or not, I actually think it would be easier if you were not good!

And as @Durg50 said please take some time for yourself to get relaxed and your head straight. As losing a job you like is not all about losing income, it is losing a part of yourself and your self image. So take your time to readjust. Obviously drinks are good for that too. ;)

Let's hope things get back to normal soon, and you do have a chance to get re-hired with your airline or another outfit.

But I do wonder how much damage will be done to some businesses before covid blows over, and how businesses and consumers will have modified their operations/behavior permanently - some businesses and jobs may never come back.
