    Tourist Season in Tokyo

Yeah, but you're a pig. So I guess that was an upgrade, huh?

    Tourists Getting Scammed

I notice that Tokyo isn't covered.

    Paper or plastic?

As in most things that activists get involved in - they care less about what the numbers show, it's all about the feelings. Besides, the science is settled (something you rarely hear real scientists say)

    Tourists Getting Scammed

Why waste time with some drunk guy for a cut from the bar off maybe a half dozen drinks when you can spike his drink, wait for him to pass out, and take his Rolex?

    Tourists Getting Scammed

I am wondering how to get this word out. I'm not aware of a website or other venue which would be the best way to spread the word. Let me know if you have any ideas. I'm not sure where this comment is coming from. I wouldn't believe this coming from anybody. - Oh, I went back and re-read my...

Community building platforms that work in Japan?

I think the above post was referring to meetup.com - that site is all about getting together in real life and very little about on-line. If you frind a group with your same interest you might be meeting them face-to-face by the end of the day.

    Tourists Getting Scammed

And the truth is that even if/when this stuff does get reported to the police it is just written up as a lost - as in lost-and-found - item. Nothing gets written up as stolen unless somebody can prove somebody stole it. Since no crime was committed the police have no reason to act.

    Tourists Getting Scammed

Oh I get it. No way to vet every person who wants to post a story of woe - and all of those would be based on foggy memories of people new to the area. Any established club has deeper pockets than some small website and would have a lawyer on it before breakfast.

    Tourists Getting Scammed

I was hanging out with some friends - a couple of whom have worked- or do work - in the hotel industry. They were saying how common it has become for tourists to get roofy'ed and ripped off in Roppongi. It's almost an everyday thing in some nice hotels even. And of course the police do nothing...

Japan is being sucked into a shit blackhole

I left what "that" was to come to what "this" was. But now both "that" and "this" have changed so much that neither is recognizable to me. There's no way to go back. Sometimes I feel like Highlander - like I've outlived my era so far that I no longer fit anywhere.

Japan is being sucked into a shit blackhole

What we are seeing is a wave of tourists who no longer require any prior knowledge about Japan because their i-phones will guide them to anything they want to do here. 40 years ago I had to learn the language, understand the culture, find out about the history to experience Japan. Now all you...

Japan is being sucked into a shit blackhole

Yeah, but 40 years ago there was P4P just for foreigners (primarily for GI's) and they were smoking hot and dirt cheap. If there was ever a time and place I would want to have frozen for me to visit for the rest of my life that would be Japan in 1979.

Japan is being sucked into a shit blackhole

Yeah, I was thinking this but thought it was too obvious to mention (maybe it isn't) and I don't have a proper M-1 Garand to be telling anybody to get off my lawn.

Japan is being sucked into a shit blackhole

Manners in public are definitely going downhill. People walking around looking at their phones (and recently books too) expect everybody around them to make space for them.

    High school baseball

It used to be called "beisubaru" until the nationalism of the 20's took over when they renamed it "yakyu". They still practice with the fervor of a martial art.

Table manners you don't like about when you date a Japanese girl

I've pretty much gotten over it. But it is nice when I find the woman i'm with has good table manners. I couldn't help but be reminded of this commercial -

    Grilling (Barbecue)

Some parks have BBQ spaces that you can reserve in advance. I have a rooftop on the building I own and have a Webber up there which gets lots of use all year round. The closest inhabited building is across a huge street from me - about 70 meters away - and I still had somebody call the police...

What do Japanese say about YOU when they dont think you can

You've got to learn how to deflect like I do. When they ask "Are you married?" I always reply "Wha? We just met and you want to get married already?" Of course they always say that's not what they meant - but what other possible reason is there to ask such a question?
