If it's not suitable, feel free to delete the thread.

I wanted to talk a little about being underage in Tokyo.

And I'd like to hear what Tokyo Adult Guide members think about such things.

So back where I come from, legal age for sex is 16, then smoking and drinking is 18, like most places.

Coming to Tokyo was kind of a surprise, because the drinking and smoking age is so much higher.
It doesn't matter a lot, because I was able to buy most things. I'm almost 20, but only two times I was refused service.

I'm a little drunk now, so that makes a difference in what I say. You can take it with a pinch of salt.

First time I was 16 in Tokyo, Ningyocho. I was tired at night, around ten I decided to go eat something if not at night I would wake up hungry.

I went to some yakitori place, and the mama-san was already very annoyed at me when I showed up at the door. What the fuck, I just want some chicken. I don't really give a damn if you don't like me. I didn't let it show though, I'm always polite and respectful.

So I order some skewers and a beer.

She tells me the minimum age to drink is 20. I look her in the eye and say, yes, I know that. She says so how old are you. I was too tired to argue an unwinnable argument so I said well, just give me a Coke. Yakitori and Coca-Cola, kinda sad. I go home and have a sleep with no dreams.

Second time was just recently.
I was at Family Mart doing some shopping. I decide I want to try some new cigarettes.

I ask the guy manning the register for Peace cigarettes because I heard they are a good Japanese brand. It turns out there are many different types of Peace cigs; he asks me which ones I want. I don't know the types, but I see a pack edged with a silver border. Mmmm, nice. So I say the number representing the pack, and he rings me up. Even says the price like a good clerk will. I put the money in the little tray.

Then he asks me if I have IC, my finger is already moving to the touchscreen so I can press HAI I am 20. But I was in no mood to show my IC and besides I am under 20. So I just look at the guy. Sometimes this works. They are stuck in a rut and if you give them the "are you kidding me do I look underage" glare they will wilt. But then I realise this guy is the most square looking motherfucker I have ever seen. It looks like he graduated from Square Academy with a major in Square Ethics and he got his degree with honours. And he literally barks at me, NO IC, NO SALE. I get my money and get out, it will only take me as long as the next konbini.

What do you guys think?
Should people really care about minors drinking and smoking?
My point of view is, if you look old enough, go ahead.

Dear Deckard,
Maybe these laws and moreover the way to circomvent them are just part of everyone's journey into life.
Take it 1st degree, 2nd degree, nth degree, this looks bitterweet at the moment but only creates good memories in the end..

and the more obvious: maybe you just dont look older than 20 and thats why they asked...

Thanks for all your responses. The point of the post, if there is one, was not to argue the legitimacy of my purchases, which are illegal by law. I was more interested in the idea that social convention in itself becomes a rule. In a place like Japan, especially, the person who breaks what is done normally is seen as the odd one out. So, in this context, the clerk who checks the age is the one going against the tide. And then, what is that concern founded by? A personal moral code? Should they really care?

I especially enjoyed djv's words. Taking the long view to life is something I partake in happily.

its more or less the other way round, rules become social norma... even when, like in this case, nearly everyone has broken the rules once or more...
the clerk who checks your age has one personal dilemma, if he didnt and something happened, he might lose his job...

otherwise i guess he wouldnt care at all, wether somebody drinks, smokes, buys porn...

Im going to put my bets he was more concerned about risking his job than about you....or any 'personal moral code'.
Risking his job at a konbini? :geek:
Maybe it's just me, but if I were working at a konbini I wouldn't give a hot damn if I was fired for selling some kid smokes. I'd be more concerned with keeping the peace. What if I'd made a scene?

Risking his only job at a konbini, because his father died 4 months ago and he needs to take care of his little sister. Oh wait, you thought he was working there just to have money for the weekends?

Assumptions like mine, and yours, are just wrong.

And if you'd make a scene, well, that would be fun to watch, please have someone recording you and uploading it to liveleak.com.

Said that, i somehow understand what you mean... I was 20 once.

Is this to be an empathy test? Capillary dilation of the so-called blush response? Fluctuation of the pupil. Involuntary dilation of the iris...

Calm down, fellas. It was a theoretical question. In the interest of keeping his job, wouldn't he avoid trouble as much as possible? My opinion is that it would be judicious to keep things moving smoothly. Checking an ID is taking a chance that things won't.

well, you also forget that since youre asian, chances are that your chances arent great anyway, since japanese are often not the biggest fans of asians... check the nameplates at konbinis, mcd, any chain stores...

avoiding trouble as much as possible, is your point of view... the japanese one is the opposite, for him avoiding trouble means following orders/rules, while to you it means "just ignore things"... there is some truth to both of them, of course... its just a different mind set...

That was rather my point, that he would be following a well established social convention, or rule. Especially since 50+ clerks didn't card me. Well, we can agree to disagree. I enjoyed hearing your point of view.

it might of course also be that he just wanted to be an ass and thought "now im going to show that kid whos boss"...

Great reference but seriously the idea of someone making a scene at a conbini over this is just sad.

Just to be clear, I'd never make a scene over being refused service, I thought that was abundantly clear in my post.
However, I have seen people lose it in Tokyo over all kinds of small things, so it's not out of the question.

**Puts on management hat...**

I've reviewed the content of this thread and while people are free to express their opinion about various topics, discussion of *anything* about underage activities are highly sensitive here.

In regards to the OP, this is Japan and the rules are set. It really doesn't matter what you can or cannot do in your home country, the Japanese laws apply to all residents. If someone sells items to you illegally, they are risking their job and reputation... not to mention the chain that the person works for will have lot of explaining to do... and guess what... the chain can sue you for damages, that is a fact.

Our advice: Don't try and skirt the law and cause other people problems.

As far as TAG is concerned:

Alcohol/Tobacco Discussion: 20+
Sex Services: 18+
Everything else below those numbers are no-no topics here.

Thank you.

Whoa....heavy thoughts, especially from someone so young, must be enhanced!

I thought they stopped selling magic mushrooms in Japan a few years ago.

Well this is a pretty common for me, even though I'm already overage but I still have to show my passport when I want to buy alcohol drink in a convenience store.
Instead of looking at it as a problem, I quite like it that others think that I'm still young.

What I'm trying to say is it's up to your perspective, to be negative or positive is up to you.

You never know what you're eating at some of the shady joints around here...
One day you order the kushikatsu and the next you're posting dumb shit on TAG, what a life.
