Downloading Copyrighted Material From The Internet

A few points:

Even with VPN, you can get nailed with copyright infringement letters - if you are paying for a VPN and a company tells that VPN provider that you are infringing, you can get your VPN subscription cut off without a refund.

"Region specific copyright" is common in every media market, and has existed as long as there's been international media. The Beatles were on EMI in the UK and Capitol Records in the US, and different songs and albums came out in the UK vs the US. This isn't easily solvable and won't be for the foreseeable future, even with Netflix and other companies developing their own movies and series.

Very frustrating topic especially with media that is very much restricted to its home market (goes for Japanese aside from anime/manga and most European languages). YouTube helps a bit with that as it often takes some time for stuff to dissappear and at least where I come from it is even legal to download YouTube content, but still...
It's not impossible. My subscription with NBA worked from everywhere in Asia and Europe provided the connection was fast enough. Prolly won't work in the US, but who wants to go there anyways :p

In reply about the question as why should her loose Italian; Unfortuately she is only 6 years old, and I will see her for at least 2 years only once a month because of my job; I am pretty sure she will forget how to speak very soon. The annoying thing about Netflix is, even if the very same animations are available in different countries (I've verified this) the languages you can choose from the Audio panel are different.

Calippo,
Here is something you could do....buy a book of Italian folk tales or classical children's stories and video-record yourself reading them. Short stories of 3-5 minutes are best. or get a longer book and read one part each recording. Tell your wife to show them to her as bedtime stories. It will give her some Italian practice and she can see you every day!
Of course, you should also try to speak with her directly on skype. The interactive speaking will be better than just passively watching a video.

That's a good idea I didn't think about! Unfortunately the skype thing is a little bit more challenging, being a chef I will be working all the time when she is not at school until late in the night when she will be sleeping. I will do the video thing and use youtube as a sharing platform with her.

Does she have Italian grandparents who love there grandchildren? ;) Employ them. Time difference makes it easy for them to Skype to Japan. They could also record TV shows for you and send them to Japan or simply upload to some private space....

There used to be websites that record TV programs for you too, not sure if available in Italian. I stopped using maybe 5years ago, as I stopped watching TV. Works like your video recorder, just online.

what about Japanese porn?

I have a "friend" who has been downloading a few years without any problems.

The thing about torrents and downloading, is the amount of money a company has to throw at the problem. Major movie companies, Paramount, Warner Brothers, etc. make tons of money. So they pay a company to track your IP in "The Torrent Swarm" when you download something, and they contact your ISP who then contacts you, because every thing you do is logged by your ISP. Other companies may not have the resources to pay software trackers to do that. While porn does make a lot of money, they may not want to spend their profits on tracking down offenders of there material, but is possible that they might. Again I recommend getting a VPN. Without one it's like having unprotected sex. :)

Honestly, from my experience, once your daughter learns Japanese and has Japanese friends, she won't want to speak Italian. Only options I see is to find an Italian group in Japan to hang with, or send her back to Italy often.

Doc.. that's what I am very afraid of. English native speakers have so many options, such as American schools... I don't care about my language myself, but I feel it's a pity to be bilingual and loose this opportunity out of parent's laziness.

I don't agree, at least not completely.

There will be times when she wants to be just like everybody else and don't want to speak other languages. It's then the parent's responsibility to continue to expose the kid to the other language. Speak it yourself to her, show videos, make grandparents to call often, anything!

I am not saying it's easy, but you are the parent! And she will be gratefull when she is older.

It would surely help if she had a "best friend" back in Italy. Maybe spend summer holidays there if she has grandparents or something there?

Especially girls are much more into writing letters and stuff.
