I'm new to MR and what's the deal there. What are the common 'risks' for a place like this? What would you advise to mitigate them if using this site?

Thanks, but I mean specifically and in particular with MR and what it may be notorious for.

Yes, we don't need to keep promoting MR and the risks are pretty evident as explained in the 'red flags' of the other thread.

The basic answer to the OP's question: Do not take anything at face value - do your vetting as already explained.
Risks: bait 'n switch, scams or you get the shibuya plastic wrap© treatment. :ROFLMAO:
Will you get killed? Not likely.
Will you get an STD? 50/50
Well you get robbed? 18.2% chance. (/s)

It's still Japan; at most you'll lose money and/or take home a new friend. At best, you'll have one heck of a story.

Since you seem to need your hand held.... it's an offshore held advertising site that's ostensibly for independent providers, and it has several layers of membership for the providers - free, cheap, and less cheap.

As it is free/inexpensive to maintain an ad there, there are many fake ads.

Commonly, you will see:

Bait and switch (you may actually meet a woman, but it will not be the woman in the pictures - might resemble her grandmother.)

Gift card scam (they'll try to convince you to buy a gift card or prepaid credit card as payment, and once they get the code, you're ghosted)

Credit cards scams (do you seriously have to be told not to give your credit card numbers to a stranger online?)

Upsells once you get in the room (oh, THAT'S extra.)

Blackmail (threats to call the police and report assault, "husband" shows up and demands compensation for homewrecking etc.)

And of course, many of the girls on there are actually being trafficked, and you would essentially be engaging in rape.

Learn to reverse image search

Google the numbers being used (if they write them in a mix of numbers and words, don't even bother - it's a scam or traffickers trying to make it harder to google the number)

Google the text in their ad. If it's stolen from another place, it's a good sign that it's a scam.

If the number being used is not a local Japanese number, probably a scam.

If they are not staying at a hotel near a major station or suggesting a meet at such or a love hotel, probably a scam

If they ask for any kind of deposit, it's definitely a scam

If they suggest any kind of gift card or the like, it's definitely a scam

If the price is far below market rate, it's definitely a scam

But really... if they're on Massage Republic - 95% chance it's a scam.

Thanks Sudsy. Your info totally helps clear it up for me. Yeah, I'm a virgin in the sense that I haven't used these kinds of sites before and I'm not aware enough of all the stuff going on.
It truly sounds very high risk and maybe not even worth considering unless I feel like pissing in the wind.

In a few words, do not use Massage Republic. The chances of failure are very high!
Spend your hard earned money in a legit and well reviewed escort.

Absolutely fascinating cause in Canada and the US, this has actually almost become the norm. Either that or some will ask you to send you a pic of your ID. In Canada not as much but in the US you are expected to give a deposit, pic of ID AND references.

Amazing to note the cultural differences. I guess it being illegal in the states makes it more common for these type of screening requirements.

We're mainly talking about Japan. Although some well known providers have been forced to start asking for deposit due various issues with flakes (moreso now than ever).
The western view doesn't directly apply to Asia and Japan specifically.

Most of the time, a deposit here usually means a scam - except for those with a long social presence history either here on TAG or via their own site/twitter.

But, appreciate your understanding... been doing this a long time and when we see something of risk, it gets pulled.

I tell you what man... I'm traveling right now and just for funsies, I thought I'd poke around and just see how crazy it is...
I was overwhelmed with so much crap, I couldn't make sense of it all. I was lookin for a site like TAG that kept things clearcut, but nothing like that exists...

In canada there is perb, terb and merb which are highly curated. In europe there are a couple. The one in Barcelona was very helpful. The states though are a wasteland. I dont even bother with punting in the states anymore.

100%. It's extremely rare to find an actual helpful forum. Maybe not even just rare but unique. I haven't found another one. Which is why I'm still on TAG even though I haven't visited Tokyo in 4 years.

I will say this is the first site I have ever come across where every post is directly reviewed by a mod. Thats... interesting. How you guys find the time is beyond me lol
