I used to be so big into this stuff. I still play it from time to time. There's a cool music scene in Japan and great bands always come over. I saw a couple of big ones last year. Anyone know what Loud Park is? Any rock/metal fans here? What do rock/metal stuff do you listen to? Any favorite bands/albums?

I'm not in to the J-Rock scene, but I grew up listening to American bands... and I still have a number of 'classics' in my playlist that I listen to from time to time.

I have a little bit of everything from the 80's and 90's -- Metallica is probably one of my top favorites over the years and a couple of tracks from Limp Bizkit, even though they are more of a fusion band, IMHO.

I used to be into modern alternative rock a lot.. now mostly into hip hop and rap.

Was a huge fan of bands like Green Day, Escape The Fate, A Day To Remember, Asking Alexandria, Falling In Reverse, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, etc..

I live mostly for metal lives, especially black metal and death metal. It's basically the love of my life. From highschool until i left for Japan, i went every year to Germany for Wacken XD
I am very grateful because a lot of my favorite bands came to Japan last year: Marduk (i touched Mortuus's chest:love::love::love:), Behemoth (Nergal spat a lot of blood on me:love::love::love:), Dark Lunacy, Exodus, Sodom...
I am also very much in love with Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Deicide, etc. but sadly no Japan live

Anyone know what Loud Park is?
Loudpark is a metal festival in Saitama, with a lot of famous heavy rock and metal bands, but not so many death/black.
They have this problem with some bands (sadly sometimes headliners) cancelling last minute, which piss off customers a lot, since tickets are quite expensive.
But it's a great festival, really.

If you love brutal stuff and want to check local bands, you should check Earthdom in Okubo (http://www1.odn.ne.jp/~cfs81480/index.html/menu.html). A lot of hardcore bands play there.

Also, Thrash Domination and Extreme Death Fest are festivals with quite big names coming everytime.

GODZ is Kabukicho is maybe the best metal bar in the Kanto area......play anything you want.

Last years Loud Park had a dud lineup but didn't stop me from seeing Slayer.

Last year i really thought a lot about whether or not to go. Three out of the four bands i wanted to see were scheduled on Sunday, but a local amateur band i am fond of had a live that day and in the end i chosed them. Because of the 10th anniversary/3 stages setting it was more expensive, so going just for Anthrax on Saturday wouldnt have worth it - and i am not even talking about going all the way to Saitama XD
But it seems there will be 3 stages this year too >_<

There are nice things before next Loudpark, though...
In April, Trivium and Iron Maiden
In May, Loud Out Fest with Loudness and Outrage
In June, Helloween
and all the local bands

3 stages suck......but then again......so do festivals.....
they're not there for you......it's all about the money.

I went there once, it s nice. They have a really good selection.

I like metal too. Heavy, power, melodic and doom. Also somethin of what they call viking metal today, but i get tired of it real quickly. I really like hardcore punk too, but cant listen to too much 77 punk or i get tired aswell. And hard rock. I cant go without hard rock =P

lately im really into bands like hammerfall, helloween, stratovarius and power/melodic oriented stuff, cuz im enjoying playing it =)

aside from that i really like psychedelic trance and national rap (from my country, ofc), but thats off topic.

The great thing about the festivals is that they're usually accompanied by smaller venue gigs of some of the headliners.... or stadium gigs for the big headliners.

heavy metal is the law!

i actually dont like godz, since the audience is usually annoying... it was nice a few years ago, though... is "current" still open? that one was always fun...
gladiator in shimokita is also nice... but as much as i like the music, the rock bars in japan are usually awful to me... then again, i only now the tokyo and osaka ones...

as for jmetal, try "metalucifer", or "galhammer"...
sigh is awful, because of that sax player... i like sax, though, but not in metal... nearly as awful as keyboards...

My main metal listening would be: Danzig, Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer and pretty much network of bands associated with these acts. When it comes to extreme metal I only like a handful of them: At the Gates and a few others. Non-metal music I like is hardcore and grunge. These days been tripping to Chemical Brothers and electronica.

I love rock music and enjoy metal too. So it's good to hear there are places in Tokyo. I'll definitely have to check out GODZ. It sounds very similar to another rock bar in Kabukicho called Rock Bar Mother. I thought this was the only place so I'll be hitting up GODZ next time I'm in Shinjuku for sure.

Antiknock is a great place for punk shows. Sometimes mosh pits get very brutal so if it's not your thing stay near the bar:LOL:
Earthdom in Okubo is mostly hardcore/extreme and is very good too.
It's not the kind of stuff i like so i never went, but i know that in Meguro, Rockmeikan showcases rock/HM bands.

If you like punk you should go to Base, a punk record store in Koenji. They have a shitload of flyers for upcoming shows, and the manager (he speaks english) can tell you which ones are good.

Thing I don't like about Earthdom is it's in the basement, an enclosed area and smoking is ok so it stinks there the walls smell like nicotine. I only watched once good crowd that was into it didn't know that Japanese were moshers there was a pit going on and it was fun to watch. There was this tiny woman there somewhere and she got bounced out of the pit quite quickly. I think I saw this same woman do this in a different venue. Much respect to her for trying. Crowd was of course dominantly male and Japanese. I am pretty sure it was only me and maybe at most a couple of other gaijins but I could be wrong about this.

Damn thank you all so much for this information!

I'm a huge metalhead and will soon be in Japan for a few months. Since I would like to go to a few shows but don't know anything about the scene there this is such a huge help to me. I'll try to check out most of those places. If anyone is interested in meeting up, let me know ;-)

I listen to all kinds of metal but mostly Metalcore/ Deathcore.
A few of my favorite bands are:
Chimaira, Arch Enemy, Static-X, Winds of plague, Here comes the kraken, Annotations Of An Autopsy, Chelsea Grin, Deathlock, Miss May I and so many more, you'll get the picture by now.
Maximum the hormone, crossfatith and babymetal are also the bomb!

I don't know when you'll be here, but if you're also into Grindcore, Napalm Death is touring Japan in September.
Thanks for the heads up. They're not my favorite band but still like them once in a while. I'm going to see them in July at a festival here so I still don't know if I'll be going but it seems that Suicide Silence will play in August at the same location.

If you could recommend some local bands, that would be so great.

I put some bands i like, with their sns if you want to check their sound/upcoming shows.
Note that I love mostly death and black.

Apologist is solid, traditional black metal. Very enjoyable, and funnily offensive MC from the singer.

Zardost is more on the death metal side, it's brutal and good.

Hernia44 is enjoyable to watch too, and costumes/custom instruments are worth seeing

Strange is death/trash (and rare enough to be mentioned, they have a foreign member)

I can't leave Yamada san out of the list, because he's God and his voice is the most beautiful thing in the world. He has 3 bands but the greatest one is Dark Insanity (black metal)

Their next lives are 5th of July, 6th of May, 16th of September. If you're in Tokyo during one of those dates you must go and worship God. Seriously, although it's good YouTube doesn't do justice to his talent, he sounds one million times better live.

Note that all these bands are not big acts, so they don't do one-man shows.
But then tickets are cheap (usually around 2000y) and sometimes you go for a certain band and you end up discovering other great bands.

Also, it's not really a live show, but in September there will be the next occurence of the event i talked about here (and it seems some automated bot replaced the name of the body suspension team "The H*****s" with the word "Escorts" :ROFLMAO:). Most of the DJs were playing metal, and the two bands playing that night were great. It will soon be 5 years that i'm here, and i think it was the best event i've been to since i arrived.
By the way, one of the bands playing was Antifeminism, and if they have a live while you're in japan, give it a try. Not only is the music brutal, but the frontman is a beast: for the finale, he put his arms on fire before diving on a pile of neon tubes (and it was real stuff, me and other people who were close got tiny shards of glass stuck in their legs )
