Greetings,

First time poster - with the intention of posting some field reports in due course! :)

I'll be staying in the Shinjuku area for five nights in October.

Looking through EXPEDIA (and similar accommodation sites), there seems to be a clear advantage to staying in a Love Hotel for the five nights, as opposed to a normal hotel - especially with regards to increased room size, amenities such as spa baths and general value-for-money. It appears plenty of non-mongering tourists have enjoyable stays at such establishments.

My question is this - as a single (gaijin) male wanting to have some fun - is it a 'given' that I'll be able to bring a 'female friend' back to the Love Hotel during my stay - or - if I decide to 'order in' from somewhere like 'Asian Mystique' - without any issues/complications at reception, etc? I would obviously book the room for 'two occupants' for the duration of my stay.

Also, any suggestions for Love Hotels in the Shinjuku area that are 'guest-friendly' (taking into account that I would be staying there five nights) would be greatly appreciated!

You normally have to check out and then back in again every day if you stay at a love hotel for multiple nights. At least that was my experience about 15 years ago. So we usually found a coin locker for our luggage during the day.

Hi - thanks for the reply, Tabanico.

Reading through reviews on EXPEDIA, it would appear that tourists regularly stay for multiple days/nights - and no mention of having to check out?

For example, this from a person who stayed 8 nights at the Hotel & Spa J-MEX in 2019...

"Loved everything about the place. I booked it on the strength of the reviews it received. I had never experienced a Japanese Love Hotel before, but can confirm it did not feel seedy at all, in fact it was rather luxurious. The lovely Suzuki gave us a warm welcome and allowed us to check in early, which was so much appreciated after a long flight from the UK. We were also gifted a bottle of Cava on our last night, which regrettably we were unable to enjoy due to a very early start to fly home. Am planning on returning to Tokyo asap and wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else. Huge thumbs up. It was perfect for our stay."

In my experience I've only seen what Tabanico has mentioned - for multiple night stays you'd normally be checking in and out every day (usually love hotels only offer overnight options during certain periods of the day, for example check in from 20:00 and check out by 11:00, since they get another couple or two in during the day as well).

I have seen some LHs on hotel sites (Hotels.com, Expedia, etc) with the option to do consecutive days so maybe the ones offering bookings through those services offer deals more similar to "normal" hotels with multiple day stays. I'd definitely check before booking as it could be inconvenient if you had to find a place for your luggage every day.

The OP seems to have stumbled on something that is pretty darn amazing and useful - and lesser known to residents. Being able to book and use LHs as a regular hotel with arrangements made through regular travel booking sites and at some pretty decent rates is wow…

Doing some research on this it does appear the LHs who participate have adapted their business model for this particular channel. Meaning you use it as you would a regular hotel when you book in this way.

Again this is a great find. Thank you OP. Please update us after your trip as to how it actually went for you.

They actually started to do that already before covid. Though the places I have been eyeing do not list they best rooms on-line, just the standard ones.

There is this one LH near Yokohama that has huge room perfect for staying several days and it's never free when I get there and never listed in any websites either.

MikeH is right, and LHs have been advertising on booking sites for a long time. I often see reviews of them by tourist either who knew what type of hotel they were booking or didn’t, which led me to research this topic. As far as I know, there is one in Kabukicho and it has been mentioned.

There is a list if you research the words Love Hotel+ Tourist+ Tokyo. Or just use booking.com.

Bali An was what I was going to recommend.

Thanks for the replies - very much appreciated!

Yes - to confirm - conducting a search on EXPEDIA (from my home country) brings up countless LH’s offering rooms for as many nights as required.

I compare the quality of the LH rooms to conventional hotel rooms - and the difference is clear.

Returning to my original question - if I did choose to stay for multiple nights at an LH - would reception frown upon me bringing a ‘guest’ back to the room (or using a delivery service)?

Thanks for that, Charlie.

I’ll do a bit more research before locking in some accomodation! I’ll be sure to report back here with any useful info, etc.

There would be no problem and it is largely expected. Multiple guests at the same time would be the only problem. Stick to one lady at a time. ;)
I have been told at a variety of LHs in Shinjuku and Ikebukuro that you can only bring one girl for your stay, so if in staying multiple days you can only bring one companion to play that would just suck really bad, I think.
So I would also be careful about what hotel to choose. Of course you could call and ask, but that has to be like the most awkward conversation in broken English ever:

You: Can I have a guest come up?
Reception: One girl only.
You: At a time?
Reception: No. FOREVER.
You: Oh...

You know, quite frankly, I'm against this usage of the love hotels as normal hotels. And the reason has to do with lack of rooms open at the good hotels during certain period of the week. If we get more tourists (later on when they actually return) booking theses rooms out, we'll have less choice of rooms on days where's there already a lack of options.

On the other hand, it'll be hilarious to see people complain about the location -- not knowing they are heading into a hot bed of a red light district. I thought it was already strange enough to see families with kids wandering around Kabukicho on a Sat night at 2am.

Edit: Since the gf and I are remote work, we don't have a need for a hotel during 'work' hours like we did before. But, that was the whole fun aspect was sneaking out for an afternoon delight in the middle of the week at 2-3pm.

Even better: While I was aware of love hotels in 2016, my American girlfriend who came to visit me then was not. She booked a love hotel in Kobe that had an absolutely gigantic dildo in a specially sealed glass case sitting on the window sill directly opposite of the front door. It made her furious, and she went on an hour long diatribe about how these toys teach women to worship penises like slaves to the patriarchy.

Now I am imagining all of those sexless couples (yes, that was myself and her at that time) walking in and wondering what the fuck they got themselves into.

As I recall, some hotels have withdrawn (or reduced) some of the toy vending machines that look like little fridges. I think most still have them, but I've heard from others that the selection has dropped off.
The last time we used one, gf bought a pair of stockings to replace her damaged set before we went back to work.

It's totally your fault as you failed to educate her that "yes dildos do teach women to worship penises but they also have other positive features too".

After all any relationship that is not based on the woman's deep admiration and respect for the man's penis is destined to fail.

Finally I found someone who engages in pantyhose-ripping, a quite peculiar kink among the natives, as I am told. Please tell me more.

Huh, is it? I dated two different Japanese girls who were both into it. I thought it was just a coincidence. (It's not a major category on JAV or other porn)

Didn’t this get rolled out cause of worries that there weren’t enough hotels to handle the Olympics. Course covid put paid to that but cause the groudwork was set out they are stuck?

The ripping of panty hoses is a quite common extra option on many a DH menu.
